Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rave: Had some business on Upper Ga. Avenue yesterday (Friday) morning and since it was such a nice day, decided to walk to my next appt. near Howard Univ. Nice to see so much daytime normalcy on Ga. Avenue these days; people of all walks of life just going about their daily business, from a group of elementary school kids to construction workers to suit-and-tie commuters to the elderly. Where else in DC can you see that?

Also nice to see a DC neighborhood that has a enough variety of lifestyles and businesses that it doesn’t completely empty out during the workday.

  • Rave: found a great town home to rent in a great neighborhood. My wife and I just got married and are tired of tiny apartment living.

Rant: after filling out the application, including providing the breed and weight of our cat, the owner came back with a “counter-offer” for a lease amount higher than it was advertised for. It was kind of a tough choice, but we’re going to go ahead because the place is so nice. Anyone else ever get a counter-offer for a rental?

YES, and it’s annoying. I guess it’s probably routine in DC but like you, we took it since it was so hard to find anything at all, and we really liked the place! Three years later, I don’t regret it (and he has barely raised the rent, which I think is often the case with individuals as landlords). Hopefully you’ll be better off in the long run.

  • What’s the best bath tub, bathroom, shower cleaner??

  • Rave: went to National Arboretum yesterday for the first time! Amazing! This weekend is the national bonsai festival and there as so many cool plants on display. I also bought a bonsai from the vendors fair. Awesome! The azaleas are also in full bloom and I took a ton of great pics. We stopped by A. Litteri’s for sandwiches before heading over and had a lovely picnic next to the old Captiol columns. This place is really the best kept secret in DC!

  • rant: got half way to the bus stop this morning and realized that i had to pee. walked back home and tcb’d. started to walk out the front door again and decided to drive instead. that pee cost me $14.50 + gas!
