Old Polly’s Fence Gone from U Street

Last month we we noted the changes with the old Polly’s sculpture/fence at 1323 U St, NW. A new sidewalk has gone in and the fence is now completely gone. I was told the owners may put up a more rustic wood fence to better match the decor of Desperados.

  • Good, that avatar-esque fence was atrocious.

  • I always hated that fence, but it was designed and made by local artist Robert Cole. He also did the “throne” at the bank on 17th St near Q St and the sculpture in the dog park at 17th and S St. The throne is nice but i never liked any of his work with human figures in it.

  • maybe people didn’t like it, but it was pretty glorious back when most of u street was a dump.

  • Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate

  • Does Desperados still have that terrible raw sewage smell inside, that Polly’s had in its later years?

    • OMG YES I remember that. I only went to Polly’s once then never again, the smell killed me! Still have yet to try Desperados. Just noticed fence down last week too!

    • Polly’s was one of those places where the smoking ban revealed some pretty disturbing ordors.

I’m just glad you can walk through that area now without pushing through people that are just standing around in front of bars.

  • How about not putting in a new fence at all, so more than one person going in one direction at a time can fit down the sidewalk there?

    • They just widened the sidewalk there by about two feet, so it will be fine.

      • Until they extend their patio 2 feet.

Like both L’Enfant and 18th & U Duplex did after the 18th Streetscape project was finished.

  • I’ll trade my demolition take Crow Bar tap head for that old metal! Seriously!

  • End of an era. I am one of the few, it seems, who actually liked that fence (though I liked it much better before the new paint job). Anyone know what happened to it — is it headed to a junk yard? Or might it be acquirable by a sentimental Polly’s fan?

    • Anyone who frequented U Street in the good old days will miss that fence. I remember when Polly’s charged me $6 for a thin ass slice of pie. Ah, memories…

I’m still waiting for State of the Union to re-open, myself.
