Nando’s Peri Peri Coming to the former Armand’s Pizza Spot in Tenleytown

4231 Wisconsin Avenue, NW

After many years at 4231 Wisconsin Ave, NW Armand’s closed back in June 2012. Thanks to all who sent emails and tweets about the new development. A recent liquor license posted out front says a Nando’s Peri Peri will be taking over the space:

“Restaurant serving primarily chicken and side dishes with seating for 148 patrons and total occupancy load of 160. Sidewalk café with seating for 58 patrions.”

You can see Nando’s menu here.

Back in Jan. 2013 we also learned a Nando’s Peri Peri would be coming to the Navy Yard in the Boilermaker building.

  • I actually really like nando’s, but somehow this seems wrong. Maybe anything other than armands would seem wrong, though.

  • we need a Nando’s on U street

  • I’ve given Nando’s a fighting chance, but I just can’t get fully on board. It tastes good enough, but the portion sizes are too small for the price. It’ll be interesting to see how it does here.

    • I agree. I do like their fries. It costs 3.29 for a small with the sauce. Seems a bit over priced. It will be interesting to see how they do vs. Cava(two doors down)

  • Well this is disappointing! I was hoping for something a little classier, but then again this strip of Wisconsin isn’t exactly known for being stylish (witness the Popeye’s, McDonalds, Chipotle, 7-Eleven, ZBurger and other assorted crap that litter this area).

    • I so agree. I live just a block behind and at the risk of being NIMBY about it I think it would be much better as something a bit classier. This seems like it’ll just be more greasy and smelly ):

  • I still miss Armand’s. Is their Capitol Hill location still open?

  • “we need a Nando’s on U street”

Green Line to Navy Yard, lol.

  • I live a few blocks away and even worked at Armands back in the day. I’m totally cool with Nando’s. An upscale place would be nice but that’s not what this part of Wisconsin is known for, alas. Now what’s going to go into the old Ruby Tuesday place?

  • If I was the prospective owner, I wouldn’t touch the Armand’s space on Wisconsin–too much history, too many bad feelings about the closure.

My guess is that the Armand’s space will become one of those ‘cursed locations’ that nobody can make a go of.

  • I will forever be an Armands Fan ! Times, People, Places change but this place was wonderful and packed for so many years, my crowd always loved the pizza (and yes thesedays we love 2 Amys as well) We went there just before it closed and it was as good as ever. I so regret this place didn’t survive. RIP !

    • I was really excited to try Armand’s and I hated it. I tried the capitol hill location for the lunch buffet, and the pizza was just not good. Rubbery cheese, wayy too much crust, etc. It didn’t have the tomatoes on top, the cast iron skillet, or anything I loved when I had Chicago pizza. I want to like it. What did I do wrong? Do they do it the real Chicago way if you eat in and order a pie at dinner?

Wish it would at least be another pizza place that had a little atmosphere.

The Firelake Grill across the street seems character less too.

Nado’s is awesome, good food. It’s not greasy and every eatery is smelly. Eat there and you might enjoy it! It’s a good thing.

      • Yeah maybe but I’m a vegan and it would be so nice to have a breakfast/lunch/evening place where people could linger outside with a cup of coffee and pastry or sandwich. Such a great outdoor patio that could accommodate families, students and singles. Casual, cultural and classy and homey. Even if it were more diner or deli-like. Just seems like it’s going to be another grab-n-go bagged grease joint and we have enough of those. Very sad neighbor here ):
