From DPW:

DPW To Collect Residential Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, for Remainder of Week, May 30-June 1, Due to High Temperatures

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that its trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6 am, for the remainder of the week, Thursday – Saturday, May 30 – June 1, due to predicted 90° and above temperatures and unhealthy air quality (Code Orange reported by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments). Residents may put their trash and recyclables out for pick-up starting at 6 pm on the day before their collections. Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Throughout the summer, when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be 90˚ or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6 am to avoid health or environmental issues.

I wish my trash guys wouldn’t come to my alley FIRST! I want them to be healthy and start early but can’t they go to another street first and hit up mine later? For the non morning people? Yeah, yeah I’ll stop whining from the comfort of my air conditioned, desk job now.

  • She was probably referring to the considerable noise made by trash collection, but don’t let that get in the way of your snark my friend.

    • No snark intended – are we projecting now? 😉

I’ve never had problems with noise personally, so didn’t think that could be an issue. What I have noticed is being really groggy in the morning and not wanting to put on pants just to take out the trash before the morning shower.

      • Heh, I think you have a point about projection 🙂 I used to live in an apartment behind Barracks Row and early trash collection would often jolt me awake way too early, so I think that’s the first place my mind went when reading the post…..

You are correct, it’s the noise. And there are eateries and such that share my alley so big trash cans, or whatever they are called, get tipped. And there are multiple trucks a morning b/c some are private and some are public or something. I don’t really understand it all, I just want to sleep 🙂

Also, I really, really appreciate the work that the sanitation people do! I would hate to live without them, so I may grumble, but I’d rather be waked up early every day of my life by a garbage truck than not have one.

      • Ah – makes perfect sense now. My block is all residential, so we don’t get the loud banging from large/commercial bins.

        YAY sanitation workers though!

  • That photo is from 2011. (2012 was even worse).
