  • Those were a lot of shots last night. Good to hear they were non-threatening… still crappy for the person shot.

  • You know Spring is here in DC when the bullets er, flowers bloom…

  • Here’s an interesting snippet from a Cohn and Rotton study about heat and crime:

“Around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, assault rates started to fall, a trend that dovetailed with a hypothetical explanation for heat-induced violence in which being uncomfortable provokes competing tendencies of both aggression and escape. At low to moderate levels of discomfort, people lash out, but at high levels they just want to flee.”

I wonder if the 80 degree tipping point stands for DCs hot and humid summers.

  • Interesting article… makes me long for 90+ degrees. Heard the gunshots… unsettling as it was a week and one day after moving a few blocks up the street.

  • I heard shots a couple nights ago (last week) around 5th and Crittenden area, and minutes later saw a group of teens walk by. I wasn’t sure it was gunshots, and I didn’t hear any sirens so didn’t take any action besides taking photos of the teens. I need to dig those up and send to MPD now……..sounds like we got a shoota in the hood. Wonder which kid may have just gotten out of DYRS?

    • don’t avoid calling the police because you’re not sure. let them figure it out. lack of police response/presence just encourages the scum to float back to the surface.

  • Worried we have another crew fight on our hands…. 4th district PD need to be all over this. If you see or hear anything, please call 911.

  • Really sad. I recall being on grand jury duty and hearing about a series of retaliatory shootings in Petworth a few years back. I hope that’s not what’s going on.

  • I heard at least 5 shots last night very clearly around 12:30. The murderous thugs need to be rounded up. Sounds like this shooting is related to the one a couple days ago.

    • Heard the same, right outside my door. Nothing like waking up to gunfire to get your heart racing unhealthfully fast. Glad to hear the victim is expected to make it.

  • Being new to this type of thing, I have a question. If you hear the shots, and really have no idea where they are coming from, should you still call the police? We didn’t call last night, but after reading the post below about shots a few days ago, it seems like nobody called that night. How do you balance overburdening the call center and reporting something that nobody else might think necessary to report?

    • Always call and never be concerned about overburdening the call center. At the minimum it logs the issue with whatever address you’ve given and gets more police attention paid to your neighborhood, which is a good thing. Give a quick call or text 50411 for anything — people poking around your alley, kids looking in car windows or being suspicious, certainly sounds of gunshots.

    • Please call… they get a few calls and that helps them narrow in on where it is… I’ve called a few times in the past and it takes two min, so you’re not tying up the line forever…

    • Call it in. If you do, the cops will go through the neighborhood and the alleyways to make sure there isn’t an injured person that otherwise wouldn’t be found until morning.

  • pretty sure there were shots fired in SW (or Navy Yard) last night/early this morning–heard them since the windows were open and quickly heard a bunch of sirens so didn’t bother calling 911. Frustrating though. Hopefully this summer calmer than usual (honestly, I think the best chance of this is lots of rainy nights and weekends).

  • I truly don’t understand why there are still shootings in Petworth. Drug dealing is at a all-time low, there aren’t gangs (only “hoods”). I see no reason for anyone to be shooting? I guess logic can’t assess this situation.
