Nice Bench

Mt. Vernon Square street-scape/sidewalk-scape(?) improvements continue. I’m digging these new benches. Though not a great view at the moment:

  • Is that bar in the middle to keep people from sleeping on it?

    • It is. Though I’m not sure what’s so terrible about taking a nap on a bench.

      • Well the sad truth is homeless people are attracted to places they can sleep and large populations of the homeless tends to dissaude other people from staying in the area which local businesses don’t like. The same reason was the cause of the new bench designs for bus stops though I don’t think they ever explicitly said it. I’m not sure what the solution is other than obviously tackling the issue of chronic homelessness in the city.

  • I’m digging the metal mesh look. Very stylish

    • Why have a bench with such high sides. It’s like an uncomfortable Victorian couch. Seems like a waste of money.

      • I don’t see how this bench is any less comfortable or useful as a bench simply because it has high sides. People might not want to sit in it because it faces a parking lot that’s 10 feet away, but that’s a different matter.

  • I’m amazed that the parking lot, it looks upon, has continued to stay a parking lot. With the pace of development in this area it seems like someone would have nabbed that spot by now.
Anyone know if there are future plans for this parking lot? I’ve never seen any signs for anything, so I assume not.

    • Hard to tell, but this is probably the lot by City Center which used to be one huge parking lot. So it’s getting better slowly but they might not be able to eliminate it entirely until there is more structured parking nearby perhaps?

      • Prince Of Petworth

Nope it’s by City Vista at 5th and K St, NW. There are plans for development. Eventually.
