  • I’d be curious to know where people locate the stairs. From inside the house? Off the back? Spiral? Ladder style? I’ve seen only one deck in Shaw and the steps from the backyard were pretty steep.

    • +1

I have been considering building a roofdeck on my rowhouse but have not been able to find a good solution for the access. I had a contractor come by and he suggested pull down stairs (similar to attic stairs) with a roof hatch. I wasn’t sold on this solution.

FWIW, the quote was around $17k and included installing the hatch, building the deck, and installing lighting. This was for a 17′ x 25′ roofdeck.

    • Access to a roof deck is always a problem and if it’s not easily accessible, you won’t get a lot of use out of it. One example I saw had a rather scary spiral stairway installed in a spare bedroom. (The deck itself was spectacular.) For our own roof deck, it was part of a major renovation and we installed interior stairs.

    • This is exactly why we have never done it. There is really no good solution in our house.

  • my dream is to do a combo deck/greenhouse on my roof. i’d love to see nice examples of access, electrical and water hookup solutions.
hopefully i can do it before my hood gets too grumbly about historic designation.

  • Does anyone have a trustworthy contractor to provide a quote? Id like to look into it but have had difficulty finding someone to price it out…
