So About Those Meatsicles… “Cool Disco Donuts” Coming to 2029 P St, NW in Dupont

2029 P Street, NW

Washingtonian has the scoop on the former Tasti D Lite retail space where we saw the “meatsicles coming soon” sign on P Street in Dupont. It’s gonna be Cool Disco Donuts. Washingtonian shares the details:

The old-school aesthetic is an homage to the Washington that Gordon grew up in, when go-go bands like Rare Essence ruled the game and graffiti artist Cool “Disco” Dan tagged every other surface in the city. The name of the business is a nod to the underground operator, though he has no official affiliation. Another local street artist, Juan Pineda, is behind the vibrant designs.

The shop is slated for a soft opening on Friday, February 1, from 4 to 8 PM

Regular hours start Friday, February 8 from 8am-8pm.

    Was Borf Burritos already taken?

    • Anonymous

it’s too soon for a retrospective or homage to Borf. I mean.. that’s like doing a movie about George W. Bush before his presidency even ended….. oh wait.

    • Anonymous

Cool Disco Dan was legendary. Borf was just some angry little suburban shithead who got busted rather quickly and is probably a night janitor by now.

      • Anonymous

20% of proceeds go to kids who spray paint their names horribly on the sides of nice looking buildings…

Never got how poorly done graf tagging was actually a “cool” or “legendary” thing to do, and can’t understand why it spawned a documentary about someone who made DC look worse than it was.

I admire borf far more that cool disco Dan. The Borf team were artists. And are indeed legendary.

Either way, riffing off of someone else’s fame like this place is doing is a total shitbag thing to do.

The article mentions nothing about meatsicles.

So now they’re naming restaurants after criminals? I think I should open a place called the Jim Jones Cafe. (free Koolaid at happy hour!)

    • jburka

Uh, it was Flavor Aid. And there’s a wee bit of difference between a mass murderer/cult leader and a pissant graffiti tagger.

Vandals are worse than Buffalo Bill. And I mean Buffalo Bill the fictional serial killer, not the fictional talk show host.

After those Taylor Gourmet people named that cheesesteak place after that bloody African dictator, it basically gave everyone free reign over that practice.

  • Anonymous

    Would that be swagger-jacking?

  • giax

So they’re selling donuts? Or am I misunderstanding this? Don’t know if the demographics on P Street changed much since 2007 but Fractured Prune, the custom donut-eri half a block away (in the now Saigon Bistro) had to pick up shop and move to Rockville for better business. Good luck to them nonetheless.

    • Fractured Prune over-expanded into DC and the suburbs. They didn’t move the DC location to Rockville, they both opened around the same time. The Rockville shop is now closed as well.

They’re still cranking out the best donuts on the east coast down at their Rehoboth location, as far as I know.

    • randomduck

Honestly, another “upscale” donut place is unnecessary. Fractured Prune’s donuts were nothing to write home about, and ordering a dozen for the office was trying on one’s patience. A donut is a convenience food: buy it, get on your way. The best places – e.g. Heller’s in Mt. Pleasant, or one of the better Dunkin, Honey Dew or Donut Dip places in New England – have fresh stock and high turnover of product, sold at an economical price. They don’t try to get all fancy – that’s not a donut’s lot. They simply move donuts that taste good, and move them quickly.

I’ll wait to pass final judgement until I’ve tried Cool Disco, but I’m not holding my breath, either.

Hasn’t this location had a series of short-lived businesses over the past few years?

    Swagger-jacking/Racism ALERT!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

this place is like a chipotle on acid.

So, is “nod to the underground operator” a euphemism for “making a profit off of someone’s aesthetic and body of work and an implied connection to them, without actually cutting them in”? (I’m not making a judgment call on the quality of the guy’s work or the owners’ right to name their business what they want…it just seems a little uncool on principle.)

Of course, this is also assuming the place will turn a profit…

    • I had the same feeling.

I’m not a fan of graffiti in general — particularly when people just tag their names and don’t even paint an image — but co-opting Cool Disco Dan’s name/reputation seems a little questionable here.

  • I guarantee the disco dan tag will be on an overpriced sweatshirt at urban outfitters within 3 months.

  • Novatnik

I’m holding out for “John Wayne Gacy’s Meatsicles”. Really folks, it was just crappy graffiti that helped spread the message that DC was a shit city, not the semi-gentrified municipality that greets idealistic hipsters who arrive and say “oh, it’s not as bad as they say…” Until of course, they get mugged. I can’t believe someone used the word “aesthetic” and “body of work” to describe it.

Went there today. The donuts were delicious. Try the peanut butter and bacon doughnut. Sorta sounds disgusting but somehow the combination tastes great
