You can talk about whatever is on your mind โ€“ quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct peopleโ€™s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Victoria: in regards to your rant yesterday let me know if you want contact to my mortgage broker who dealt with my 2-Unit refi.

    • Yes please – I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you posting their contact here. I have been happy with my broker – who was recommended by a friend – but any leads for info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Rave: hit the 20-week mark today – absolutely crazy. the ultrasound earlier this week looked great, and i might be feeling the baby move more. i might be finally starting to trust that the pregnancy will result in a baby ๐Ÿ™‚

on an odd note, it’s now apparently (reasonably) obvious to anyone who knows me that i’m pregnant – including one of the women behind the counter at my post office – who actually commented on both the size of my belly and the size of my boobs yesterday. for real. fortunately, i found it mostly funny rather than offensive.

    • It gets much, much worse. People think a pregnant woman’s body is fair game for all kinds of comments.

      • I suppose it’s good practice then. Hopefully I’ll continue to be amused rather than annoyed. And I’ve heard lots of stories from friends with kids, so I’m at least somewhat prepared.

      • This is shocking to me. Is this just women? As a guy, the idea of commenting on a pregnant ladies anything is foreign to me. Perhaps I am just polite and tend to mind my own business?

I did learn you are allowed to say the mom-to-be looks happy and glowing, so I said that with a co-worker, but RE any body parts, I am staying miles away.

        • Same here! Who are these people that make random comments about other’s bodies? People can be so very, very strange (and rude).

      • It gets even worse than that when random strangers want to pat the belly.

Let me know when you are ready for name suggestions, I love to think up names. My pregnant coworker just had her baby, so I need a new outlet for my creativity ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Shockingly, we have already picked out names for both possibilities. Though it’s always possible we’ll change our minds later on. I’ll definitely let you know if we need help or suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks!

      • A friend told me that her daughter, due next month, is going to be Esme. I didn’t take her seriously at first because my mind went straight to Twilight.

        • Emmaleigh504

Oh dear. But I’ve heard it’s a name from another (better) much beloved book series, but I forget what it’s called. Many nerd type people were pissed at Stephanie Meyers for destroying that name for them.

    • Yay! I’m 18 weeks and getting excited. Just starting to show. Find out the sex in a week and a half. Hope you’re feeling good.

    Rave: Beautiful sunrise this morning!
Double rave: More snow in the forecast
Rant: I don’t have pabloraw’s shutterbug skills, so I have to just enjoy these moments in my memory

  • Revel: Snow
    Rant: Only 1 inch expected
Double Rant: That 1 inch will be too much for the region to handle during rush hour
Double Revel: I don’t have to drive

  • Rave: Tyvex. Cut up an Express Mail envelope from the post office and used it around my fingers. Kept them nice and toasty.

Rant: Wife in the tropics for business till Tuesday.

  • Rant: Feeling a little picked on/crapped on/stomped on at work today. Small office. Tricky not to hear conversations and want to pipe up/add in.

Rave: Headphones and Pandora. Must focus on rocking out and getting shit done instead of even vaguely being aware of conversations around me.

Rave: Snow! Nats Fest tomorrow! Snow! First class of the semester of the class I teach and students seem like a good group! Snow!

P.S. Congrats MtPresident on your 20 weeks!

  • Rave: Coffee!
    Rant: Wedgies ๐Ÿ™

  • Rant: I try and try and try to be supportive and voice, but if it’s not one issue it’s another, more stress and no matter what I say or try to do it’s never any good. For the past 3 weeks it has been non-stop. I am tired of hearing it, dealing with it, and most of all tired of being the punching bag. You put yourself into this situation, after not listening to me in the first place and here we are now…back to square one. I honesty have had enough!

    Rave: That felt good

  • Question: how is El Chucho as a bar? I only hear people talk about it as a restaurant, but see it’s open until 3 am on Fri & Sat. I’ve never been. Is there a large area for people who are just drinking? What time do the diners typically clear out on the weekends?

    • I love El Chucho. I’ve sat at the bar a couple of times on a Friday or Saturday night and find the bartenders to be extremely competent and professional. They’ll talk to and answer your questions without seeming hurried or annoyed. My experience with table service has been a little different.

  • Rave 1: My psychopath boss is out of town for a few days.

Rave 2: Had a second interview for a job that I’m very excited about! They then called my references and one of them was kind enough to tell me all about the conversation that she had with my prospective employer.

Rant: I’ve gained probably 10 lbs since last April.

  • Rave: Office is surprisingly empty today, which makes it nice and quiet to get work done.

Rave: Officially one month mark of seeing my girl, and it’s going very very well.

  • Rave: I lost 25 lbs since October!
Rant: None of my clothes fit and I can’t afford to buy a lot of new stuff. Had two pair of work pants taken in right before Xmas and now they’re too big again.

    • Congrats! Do you have a tailor recommendation? I need some pants taken in…

      • Well, I don’t know if I’d highly recommend but I used Christopher Kim’s. The gentlemen are VERY nice and do good work but it was almost as expensive as buying two new pairs of pants, and when I showed up to claim the items, one pair was not done yet, so he asked me to come back. I would have appreciated a head’s up at the least, so I didn’t waste time making two trips. Anyway this is turning into a Yelp review but I could use a tailor recommendation, too!

    • I recommend the sale section at the Gap. They often have an extra 40% off offer, and it is great for dress pants, which are what stop fitting me when my weight fluctuates a bit. Skirts, if you like wearing them, can be more forgiving.

Rant: Grocery store discussion made me crave Kroger’s Ranger cookies.

Rave: I’ve got king cake at home and it’s infinitely better than any cookies.

Rave: Sending an old friend a surprise king cake. Happy Mardi Gras!

    • hi – i am in new orleans now – where’s the best place to get king cake?

      • Emmaleigh504

Honestly, grocery store king cakes in New Orleans are good. Any bakery is going to have good ones too. If you see a Tastee Donuts you can get a McKenzie’s king cake (there was much crying and nashing of teeth when McKenzie’s close; then when Tastee bought the recipes there was much rejoicing).

Some good bakeries: Haydel’s, Ambrosia, and Gambino’s.

        • Wait, isn’t Ambrosia in Baton Rouge?

I’m a Haydel’s gal, myself, but it seems like everyone in New Orleans has a different favorite and will fight to the death in its favor.

          • Emmaleigh504

Don’t they have a New Orleans branch? A pal on FB was begging NOLA ppl to send 1 from Ambrosia to her in California.

I can’t keep up with them all. And if you were a REAL New Orleans girl you would know that one doesn’t just get them from just 1 bakery. So there ;P

  • Rant: This fillibuster deal stinks to high heaven. If you want to block the business of the country, you should have to stand up and talk. Period.

  • Rave: Turned in my 2 week notice today! As of Feb. 11 I will no longer be DCnDC as I am moving out of DC!!

Rave: No more long distance relationship!!

Rave: Parent meeting happening with my BF. Last weekend I met his, this weekend he meets mine, and everyone is really happy for us being together.

  • Rave: New boots from REI! They were on sale and I got them with a gift card. I wore them with wool socks yesterday and they kept my feet nice and warm. They feel the same way today with regular socks.

  • I hope everyone has a blessed weekend.

  • Rave…?: Apparently we are going home early.

Rant: I have no groceries, and there’s no way I’m hitting the Teet today, knowing DC snowphobes.

  • Rave: birthday celebration tomorrow!
Rant: I hate having a January birthday. Its goddam freezing out which makes it so much harder to find a cute outfit … I want to wear a short dress and strappy heels, not snow boots and a wool sweater!

  • Rave: Moving out of DC.

Rant: DC has grown on me. I might just miss it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Rave/rant: Started something with a really great person, and realizing that now that I am leaving… I don’t know what to do. I don’t even know how to broach the subject, and I’ve done the long distance bit before. I’m not moving too far from the area, but this is a head vs. heart thing. Also, not sure this person would be into the idea and am afraid of getting rejected… again. Any advice appreciated, PoP’ers.

    • You’ll never know if you never ask.

    • I was in a similar situation awhile ago. Met someone who lives a few hours from DC, and I was planning on moving to Texas. I was as up front as I could be about the impending move but had such a great time with the guy that we decided to do the LDR because it was worth the risk. Now crazy in love and just got a job in the same city as my guy. You never know what will happen and plans can always change. If you are having a great time with the other person and they with you, then why not?

  • Rant: Tired from a late night last night.
Rave: It was a late night for all the right reasons ๐Ÿ˜›
Rave: Parents coming to hang this weekend – it’ll be great to see them!

  • Suggestions on where to take Portuguese class? Does anyone have experience taking Portuguese at ILI? I took beginner Arabic and my TOEFL class there. while the latter was good, my Arabic teacher left me perplexed.

    • I do NOT recommend taking Portuguese at the Graduate School USA (formerly USDA Graduate School). I took two terms of Portuguese there, and the instructor — although nice — was a total slacker. No syllabus, no final exam; she just made it up as she went along. And sometimes she would go off on long monologues that we couldn’t really understand.

  • Rant: my thermostat has been cranked to 80 for days now, but the temperature in my room won’t get above 60F. I tried to get this resolved last year, but they installed another electric baseboard heater that is not powerful enough for the space. I’m questioning whether the building is even insulated, though.

Rave: planning my Super Bowl Party menu. I love making food!

Rant: I didn’t even get called for a job I was interested in and think, at least in my opinion, I am very well qualified for. It would have taken my commute from 14 miles to about 1.5 miles.

    • You didn’t ask for suggestions, but here’s some unsolicited advice… I am in love with my EdenPure heater. They’re a few hundred $, but it really heats up my living area, which is hardly insolated. And it’s cheap to power, at least according to my Pepco bill.

      • I’m more than happy to take advice. I’m a renter though, so I don’t particularly want to shell out a couple hundred bucks for a space heater. They gave me a space heater last winter, a basic Sunbeam type thing, but I gave it back since I didn’t have anywhere to store it and now I’m late in asking for it back. But, I’m not extremely comfortable with using it a lot and if I don’t get home at least an hour before I want to go to bed, preferable more like 2 hours, then it’s not even worth it.

I will say, the electric mattress pad I bought is wonderful, but I shouldn’t be trying to combat 57 degree temps in my bedroom.

    • You could try getting that window insulating stuff – it’s basically saran wrap to cover windows. It’s not too expensive and fairly useful if poor window insulation is the problem.

      • The windows are only three years old and seem to be a of pretty good quality. I don’t think that they’re drafty, but it’s not a bad idea to do as much as possible to keep the room insulated.

It just annoys me that it might actually be a lack on insulation in the walls issue. That is not something I can fix as a renter.

  • Rant: still sick ๐Ÿ™ Throat hurts.
Rave: feeling a lot better than I did yesterday
    Rave 2: weekend!!!

  • Rant: Drivers that don’t understand that bike lanes on the right side of the road are not good for left turning cyclists….drivers, specifically impatient a-holes like the one I met this morning, use your common sense. Of course I’m in the left turn lane, I’m turning LEFT.

    • I’d add people that think you should stay in the lane despite there being obstacles. I’ve had multiple incidents on 17th when I’ve been in the right-most travel lane b/c a delivery or garbage truck was blocking the bike lane.

  • Rave: That’s my picture!!

  • MsNesbitt

RAVE: Downloaded my entire Twitter archive this morning. Cracking up over things I tweeted in 2009 and 2010. Definitely making my Friday fly!

RANT: Still battling pink eye and some other ailment that is not responding to a z-pack.

  • Rave: Reproductive rights
