Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user Brandon Kopp

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rant: What’s up with all the jersey barriers on the sidewalks? It is because of inauguration? Will the come down afterwards? I’ve noticed them at Farragut West (17th St entrance) and Smithsonian metro.

Rave: One day of the week down, four more to go!

  • Rant: New Hampshire Avenue south of Dupont – the construction work is awful! Plus it seems like they’re digging and filling and digging and filling the same holes!

Rave: Good night of sleep and no plans tonight except to hunker down and get some writing done – I need to pull together a personal statement for an application…

Rave: I got a jury duty summons last night! Finally get to do my civic duty.

    Rant: It’s from New Orleans.

Rave: Getting excited for PH-90 in a few months.

    • Oh DC will get you sooner or later. And you’d better hope it’s not Grand Jury service like I got – for 3 days a week for 3 months. And if you are so enthused about service, you can volunteer your services to the court. 🙂

      • I have Grand Jury summons next week. Not looking forward to it. Had petit a couple years ago and just barely escaped being picked.

        • Getting a good group that can work well together makes all the difference. My group was oddly friendly – it almost like a Breakfast Club type experience. I still meet up occasionally with some of them. That said, I don’t think mine is the typical experience. Best of luck, and thank you in advance for your service.

          • My jury experience (the one time I was chosen out of two pools, four trips to jury duty total in 8 years here) was like that too! We had jury duty happy hour, then first and second anniversary happy hours, then it trailed off. I think some of the people still stay in touch one on one, though. So many of us even went to the sentencing that the judge mentioned us during his spiel.

I thought it was a great, community affirming experience, except for the whole crime part.

I’ve been here over 6 years and DC hasn’t ask me to join in their reindeer games. 🙁

        • That’s odd. Do you have a D.C. driver’s license? Are you registered to vote in D.C.?

          • It took them 8 years to finally get me and yes I had a DC licence and was registered to vote.

          • Man, they got me 1 year to the day the first time I established DC residency. I fully expect another summons the first week of May for my second round of residency.

          • I got summoned for the first time only a few months after getting my DC license. Since then I’ve been called pretty much right on schedule, every 24-26 months. Four times in just over 8 years.

I do know 3 people who have lived here 8 years, pay their taxes here, and have DC licenses, and have never been called.

          • Emmaleigh504

Yep, I’m registered and all that.

  • RAVE: Found parking a block from my apartment within 5 minutes of getting back in DC after an unplanned trip to VA last night. 🙂

  • I’m so glad I was raised to appreciate what I have and not complain about what I dont have. I love my job ( it does not pay much), I have an old car (Toyota), I have a roof (small) over my head, and I have great people in my life. I see so many other people that make much more than me, get a new BMW every year, have a big house, and have “misery” written all over their face.

  • Rave: I’m getting a dog. Everything is happy beautiful sunny let’s hug.

  • Rave: Free NSO performance at Howard University last night. What a wonderful escape into the engrossing world of classical music. I really loved the mix of traditional classics, atonal, the Duke, and musicals.

Rant/Rave: What’s with the conductor’s Dr. Evil jacket? Honey, just wear a suit, ok?

  • rave: hockey starts on saturday. just got tickets for the devils v. caps game next month!
rant: too much work to work, not enough time – so it’s kind of stressful. (at least i love my job though).

  • I was sorry to hearing about former Mayor Fenty and his wife Michelle separating. However, I wasn’t surprised to hear this news. I wish them both well.

  • anon. gardener

Rave: thanks to SAF and the Washington Humane Society, I got 3 cats neutered this weekend. For free! Washington Humane Society rocks.

Rant: stupid cold. I sound like Marge Simpson’s sister.

  • rant: vertigo. constant dizzyness really affecting everything. meds make me so sleepy.

revel: still have a fellowship until september
    rant: having to job hunt…again.

  • Rave: Riding in the rain today. I don’t really know why I love it, but I do. Makes me feel like a kid. Was only chilly once I got into the city and had to stop at lights (see, some of us do:-).

Rant: Drivers on cell phones. Really…driving should be your ONLY job. It’s not OK! One lady today was talking on her cell while going through a spreadsheet! Another guy was holding the cell w/ his shoulder, had a coffee in one hand and a cigar in the other. It’s the height of arrogance to put everyone’s safety at risk for your “convenience”.

  • Rant: 2012 DC Home Buyer Tax Credit was axed in the January fiscal cliff negotiations. There goes that $5,000 I had plans for. :-/

Revel: Still getting a bigger tax return than every before because of mortgage interest paid.

  • Rant: Event planning–part of my job and one of the main reasons I was hired but it stresses me out!
Rave: I HAVE a job to stress me out.
Rant: Stopped by PetSmart last night to visit the cats. There were 2 BEAUTIFUL calicos. My landlord won’t let us have pets and I probably can’t/shouldn’t afford vet bills but I WANT A CAT!! My fish just isn’t as cuddly.
Rant: This weather! Either rain or don’t rain–enough with this gross in-between.
Rave: After seeing the movie last week, now reading The Silver Linings Playbook.

Question: Anyone use Crunch Fitness? Opinions?

    • Yay yay yay! My high school english teacher and soccer coach wrote Silver Lining’s Playbook – enjoy the book (and his other ones for young adults are great too!).

      • What high school are they from? I’m interested bc I’m also originally from Philadelphia. And YES event planning is SO stressful. It’s amazing just how many moving parts there are to coordinate.

  • Rant: The new route driver for my bus that repeatedly almost blows by me when I’m standing at the bus stop, then calls me “Honey” and says I need to get a flashlight to signal him to stop. At the bus stop. I have been riding this route for 5 years and never had any issues with this before…

Rave: Was told I would be receiving a job offer this week!

Rant: I have no patience and am obsessively checking my phone and email

    • You could report the driver to WMATA, but he would probably be suspended with pay.

      • Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Whatever punishment he received — if any — would be very light indeed.

And you’d probably have to capture it on video (or at least audio) for anything to happen.

  • Rave: Had an awesome two weeks in Brazil for our honeymoon.

    Rant: Back at work.

Rave: Nice to be home with our dogs.

  • Rave: Took the chance of all chances and adopted a second dog last weekend. I had a feeling about her, and boy was it right; she’s wonderful. And my other dog loves her, and everything is so great. If only it would stop raining, then she’d want to go outside…

  • Rant: a dog who hates the rain and therefore is getting no exercise since he refuses to be outside for more time than it takes to pee (and possibly maybe poop)

Related Rant: the rain. it’s like the sky is spitting on us.

  • rant/rave: ads from amazon for a banana slicer when i visit PoP.

  • Rant: I was somehow hoping and believing after Newtown the world would be a different place. We wouldn’t have folks like Abby and TC wondering why their life was so messed up by stupid thugs leaving their prey to die on the street. We wouldn’t have innocent friends slammed by a bike and punched in the jaw by a rough kid thinking it’s his block to control. We woudn’t have handguns so rampant in the hands of masked thugs all through DC. We wouldn’t have commuters reading their cell phones instead of looking out for cyclists. But apparently the world continues much as it was before.

    • “We wouldn’t have commuters reading their cell phones instead of looking out for cyclists.”

You’re lumping this together with violent crime. Stop for a second and think about that.

      Lol, wut?

      • More people are killed by cars than guns in the U.S. I think in DC too. I know in 2012, there were more murders by gun/knife than by car, but I don’t know how many of the gun/knife murders were guns.

  • homerule

Rave: Our new puppy. ZOMG, I love him. I have waited so many years to get a dog, I’m even okay with middle-of-the-night wake ups to let him out and housetraining him. But, I especially love cuddle time with him. Oh, what joy!

Rant: Wet dog smell ; ) Rain, rain go away!

  • RANT: Back at work today after 6 magical days on the Mayan Riviera.

RAVE: Amazing trip to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Definitely returning next January for a longer trip (probably 5 days relaxing in Tulum & 5 days enjoying the energy of PDC).

  • Emmaleigh504

additional rave: all the raves about pets, they are very cute and happy-making.

  • skj84

Rant: Stressed out and overwhelmed at work. We’ve had a few management changes recently and It’s not for the best.

Rant: This weather. Its just nasty. Between and cold and rain and work I feel really cranky.

Rant: I think one of my best friends is ignoring me and I don’t know why. I’ve texted her a few times in the past two weeks and have not heard a thing back. I know she’s ok because she’s been positing on facebook, and I have no clue what I could’ve done to offend or upset her.

    Rave: Good date last night!
