Something about this rings too good to be true (or normal/high for five years ago). The lack of pictures leads me to believe there’s something off.

Those were my first thoughts as well
Uh, yeah. I’d be shocked if there wasn’t something seriously wrong with this place.
And even if there is something wrong with it the pool of applicants will be so huge that one’s chances of getting it will effectively be zero.

this is suspect, why was it posted last month for 200 more?
It is probably a scam. When I was looking for apartments, pretty common for people to take an old picture/posting, and repost with a “too good to be true” price. I’m not sure what the end result was — to spam you (“that place was taken, but here are a bunch of ads for other places”) or something worse, like trying to scam people out of security deposits. Either way: very very suspect.
Agreed. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is….
I once saw a basement studio unit on this block, maybe even this house, it was absurdly tiny, you’d have to chose between a couch and a twin bed… and the “kitchen” was a hot plate and a mini fridge. I’m not sure if this ad is for the basement or not, says 1 BR one place and efficiency another…
PoP, unless these are sponsored posts that you need to support your blog, why not limit to posts that actually have pictures? If this supports you financially then I’m a big fan of whatever keeps your excellent blog going. But if it’s just a fun feature, listings without any information/photos aren’t very useful or interesting. How can we use this odd-ball listing to gauge anything about the real estate market?
Thanks. It is just a fun feature. While I always prefer to use ones with more photos, if I think one is a particularly good deal, I’ll still probably post it.
I lived in this English basement studio for over 3 years until moving out in November. It’s a great little space and the listed price is exactly what I was paying for over a year; I’m really surprised they didn’t raise the rent. And, the listing agent is the landlord’s regular agent so it’s not a scam. It’s definitely a studio, though–not a 1 bedroom. But, it’s a decent size for a studio. I fit 17 boxes of stuff in the kitchen where there is lots of cupboard space. In the living space, I had a queen-sized bed, night stand, desk, shoe rack, full-sized futon, TV stand, end table, 2 bookshelves, & a treadmill. That was probably more furniture than I would recommend but it’s definitely spacious enough for a sleeping area & a living area. Another plus is that you’re completely separate from the rest of the house so utilities aren’t split, you have your own washer/dryer & dishwasher, and there’s no inside connection between the spaces. I also liked having a little porch outside where I grew veggies & flowers in pots during the summer and could sit and read. A drawback is that there is only 1 small closet but you do have a little extra storage space in the closet containing the water-heater & A/C unit. The other drawback is that the landlords have been wanting to sell the house so your landlords could change (I got along well w/ the current owners so this disappointed me) and you have to contend w/ people coming to look at the house. I’m not sure if it’s still on the market, though, so this may have changed. If you’re looking for pics, PoP posted the house listing a few months ago and there were pics available there. You’re only 3 blocks from U St–close enough to enjoy the area but far enough away that the street is pretty quiet. And, the neighbors are all really great & friendly! All-in-all, it’s a great studio apartment and I enjoyed my 3+ years there.
That sounds like one hell of a deal. Why on Earth did you leave?
Haha. It was a good deal, which is why I stayed as long as I did. But, I was ready for a bigger apartment with a proper separate bedroom.
