Interesting that the suspects were described as unknown. I guess if they had been described as known, they might be a little easier to track down.

“armed with a black color handgun”

Cop-speak often adds the word “color” after an adjective describing a color, sometimes to unintentionally hilarious effect. In this case, it invites the question “so, which misinterpretation of the phrase ‘black handgun’ was the author trying to avoid?”

This idiom kind of made sense when it was just used to disambiguate descriptions that used the words “gold”, “silver”, etc (was it a gold watch, or just a gold-colored watch?). But for most every other color, it’s just an unnecessary word.
