  • Saturday night there was an armed carjacking on U Street and Sunday three people were shot on U Street. At what point does MPD decide to have a bigger police presence (foot patrol, cruisers, horses, etc) along U Street?

    • It seems like there is already a car on every corner and an officer on every block. I just don’t think they can put more police out there. When you have this many people out drinking and interacting, the violence seems unavoidable.

      • @DC 1:07

I did not see the police presence you are describing on Saturday. Officers may have been called away on an emergency and they may have had a significant undercover presence but I did not see many uniformed officers or squad cars.

        • I live directly behind Indulj on T. Police can often be found sitting in their warm cars in the alley between T and U on most nights. While it’s nice to have them there when I’m parking my car behind my house, I would much prefer they are walking the street keeping track of all the drunks causing trouble.

  • you would think that the word would be out by now that getting shot hurts, and should be avoided at all costs. Their moms clearly didn’t teach them to use their words and work out their differences. thumb wrestling is also an acceptable way to resolve conflict.

  • Thank Gawd housing in this area only goes for 500+ a square foot. Otherwise who knows what type of riff-rafts would be roaming the streets.

  • Unfortunately this happened in front of Indulj around 12a this morning.

  • I think we are going to need atleast 5-10 additional people to get shot after leaving Indulj. Then the police may think its worth while to station officers around the vicinity. This is currently such a hard concept to figure out up to this point. We all know the real problem on U street is the Brixton & “Dodge City” since those places are “Swagger Jacking” U streets cool vibes right? That is why they publish sooooo many articles about those places stealing “swagger” while ignoring the multiple shootings coming from Indulj.

    • Your right Mike, “they” are out to get us. It starts first with the publication of soooo many articles. Then their plan begins to get more sinister.

  • I was out on ‘U’ Saturday night but I did not know about carjacking until now. I do know the most visible officer I saw seemed interested in moving along a particular food truck. The truck was parked in a legitimate space in front of Rite Aid, not within a ½+ block of an open restaurant serving food (it was close to 1 am) The truck did not have a line that was the obstructing a sidewalk , so assuming the truck was licensed, it was not causing an obvious immediate problem. Granted I don’t know what rules govern food truck operation, nor do I know if that cop was following orders from superiors, but at that hour monitoring the actual pedestrian flow and potential problem venues seems more important than addressing a food truck.

  • I hate to say it but U st is or will soon become the new Adams Morgan. Hell, H st. NE could fall victim too if they don’t get it together. One thing I will say is that there is a heave police presence on H st. NE (in uniform and undercover), they know what it is…

  • Its just a matter of time (unless it has already happend and I did not hear about it) until there is a shooting at Alero on U Street. What once was a restaurant has become a club.

  • Adams Morgan forces the businesses to pay for off-duty police to assist with these types of crimes. The U Street businesses should do the same. It is only a matter of time before folks from VA or MD stop coming to the neighborhood because they are scared. I’ve heard the U Street businesses don’t want to pay for this assistance to prevent crime and promote safety.

  • I NEVER see police patrolling the streets. NEVER!! All they do is sit in their cars, or drive around. What type of crimes can they witness and/or prevent while they are driving. MPD’s plan to address problems are ridiculous! In fact, MPD is ridiculous. They need to more money, hire more cops (cops that know what they are doing) and, also, these cops should live in DC (not MD or VA).
