Coppi’s to Re-open on U Street in 2013?

14th and U Street, NW

Speaking about the new Italian restaurant coming to U Street yesterday, some readers mentioned how excited they were for Coppi’s to reopen after the Louis construction is completed at 14th and U St, NW. Well I saw something curious and I’m wondering what you guys think. On Coppi’s website they write:

“Update!! We are under construction! Anyone ready for the next chapter? Thank you for your continued support. We have something amazing in the making, stay tuned!”

But walking by U Street you see the following sign for DC Noodles:

And for Utopia:

But in front of Coppi’s there is no reopening in 2013 sign, only this:

Am I thinking too deeply on this?

  • Really hope they reopen soon and retain much of their original menu and ambience. Always thought the staff was so nice and helpful and liked that I could count on eating here and not having to shout at my dining fellows. And they had an amazing wine selection. Please, please don’t turn this into a “concept”.

There was a sign there that read “Copi’s: re-opening 2013″ but it was taken down soon after (presumably because of the mis-spelled name). I’d wager that Coppi’s is re-opening in 2013…but whoever made the other signs didn’t want to re-make the Coppi’s sign.

I thought the same thing when I saw the three signs. I hope Anonymous is right. I’d hate to lose any of these restaurants, particularly Coppi’s.

I could take it or leave it as far as Utopia goes, but I can’t wait for Coppi’s to re-open! Does anyone know if Coppi is cheffing someplace else in town before the restaurant is open again?

So why did they have to close the restaurants in this strip for the construction of some building down at the corner? Are these old homes being incorporated into the new structure somehow?

  • U Street Buzz

Coppi’s closing was always said to have been temporary. From a July post on their FB page:

“Sadly, we are informing all of you that we will be temporarily closing on July 14, 2012 due to renovations and the Louis, JBG Project of 14th and U Street.”

    • Prince Of Petworth

Though that doesn’t explain the signage. Anonymous at 12:49pm’s comment probably (hopefully) makes the most sense.

I hope the next chapter doesn’t include weird service and mediocre food. I really want to like this place, but they need to do better.

I just wish they’d have closed down the McDonald’s on the corner instead.

I miss DC Noodles delivery =(
