Police Officer Attacked with Knife in Brookland this Morning, Attacker Killed

From MPD:

At about 6:45 this morning, Friday, November 2, police were called to a home in the 3500 block of 17th St., NE, for a possible assault. When officers arrived, one of our 5D officers was attacked by a suspect with a knife. The officer was assaulted, and in defending himself shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

The officer received several stab wounds. He has been released from the hospital and is doing well.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers that have arrived at 5D this morning.

Isn’t that just like a thug? Brings a knife to a gun fight.

What a terrible day for the officer, I wish him a speedy recovery.

The local NPR station interviewed Cathy Lanier about this story this morning. Cathy said that it was originally a domestic call – grandson and grandfather were fighting. The grandson snuck up on the police and pulled a knife on one of the officers. This happened in Brookland, not far from where a 20-something guy assaulted a woman and tried to stab her to death earlier this week. Has anyone seen any information about whether these incidents are related? http://wtop.com/109/3095762/Police-need-help-finding-man-who-force-way-into-apt-VIDEO

This is horrible for the police officer, but glad to hear the police officer was able to defend himself. I don’t think it’s likely to be connected to the RI Ave stabbing/attempted rape. They are a mile and a half apart (http://goo.gl/maps/hg9Gu), and a domestic dispute with your grandparent at home is quite a different sort of crime than breaking in, stabbing, and trying to rape someone. Also if I were on the run for a stabbing, I would probably avoid threatening other people with knives for at least a week.

one less piece of $hit on the street. speedy recovery to the officer!

So pleased to hear that the suspect was shot and killed. Let’s get this repeated a few hundred more times and the city will finally be livable.

kind of dismayed by these comments, but i need not be surprised. wishing the officer a speedy recovery, but a gun is no match for a knife. wishing the grandfather peace.

So you are saying the cop shouldn’t have shot his assailant? That’s ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

Of course a gun is no match for a knife – in the odd occasion when the knife-wielding attacker is stark naked so you know s/he doesn’t have another weapon, and of course freezes right where they are, not moving toward you . . . and oh – surrenders immediately. . . get the picture dumb head?

  • Lanier said that the attacker got behind the officer(s), and the officer was struck with a knife multiple times.

I have no idea what happened in this case, but it’s generally not wise to put yourself in a situation where there is *any* opportunity for someone to come up behind you.

So what’s the other side of this story?
