Pines of Florence “Fine Italian Dining” is expanding their options at 2100 Connecticut Ave, NW. They’re now offering pastries, crepes and serving breakfast as well as continuing to serve fine Italian cuisine. We’ve previously judged Pines of Florence back in Jan. 2009. Anyone try the breakfast or pastries yet?

I’ve eaten at the previous iteration, and it was kind of an old school “meh”.
But it’s great to see restaurateurs experimenting with rebranding though, in my n’hood, we have the Park Cafe that just closed this summer after apparently languishing for years as a fine dining restaurant. If they hired someone to be there in the AM and offered take out coffee and pastries they would just kill it with all the people walking to the park or the metro. Similarly, Al’s pizza has decent pizza, but the building is sad and still has the inch thick plexiglass from when the area was rough. If they spruced up a bit, got a patio dining permit (the patio is huge, with frontage on East Capitol), and got a tavern alcohol license so they could sell dine-in beer and wine, it could be a very profitable business, similar to Red Rocks or other neighborhood restaurants.
