Well it’s been a bit of a rough week so I’m staying away from politics and sticking with something more fun – autumn drinks! Side question – what is the difference between autumn drinks and winter drinks? We spoke about our favorite pumpkin beers back in September. For today I’m curious about both hot and cold options including cocktails. And if you happen to have the recipe please leave that as well. Tonight looks like it’ll be the perfect night for one!

Just moved into my new condo in dc and it's been over two weeks and I still have not...
It's summertime, school is out and it's the weekend. Wife and I were comnig home last...
murder is always scary and horrible. always.
yeah, you always mention that when there is a crime in this area.
I lived at Lincoln and R from June 2008 to June 2009. I personally didn't have any...
I like a nice hot toddy every once in a while, sick or not. Hot spiked cider is great too. The Heights was making one last year and I really enjoyed it.
Basically, fall time is bourbon time.
Bourbon Manhattan on the rocks. Or any kind of whiskey with just a bit of ice.
Star & Shamrock’s fig-and-date Jameson infusion.
Best. Thing. Ever. Get thee to H Street.
Margaritas! Vive le summer! Juuuust kidding.
I’m with DF on the warm, spiked apple cider.
Bell’s Expedition Stout. My favorite winter drink too. Also, a glass of bourbon or rye, neat.
Milk punch: warmed milk, sugar, brandy, & dash of vanilla. yum
For whatever reason in the winter I like brown drinks like whiskey or brandy and in the summer I like clear drinks like vodka.
Definitely milk punch.
This is going to be awesome. I really don’t have a favorite fall or winter drink but I’m pretty sure I drink more yac and bourbon during those months. BTW, yac = cognac…
Last Sunday after church, my host served an “Autumn Sangria” – red wine with apples, pears, etc. It was much better than ‘normal’ sangria, with more complex flavor. New fave!
Love a Rye Manhattan this time of year. And it’s a great time for darker/stronger beers, like DC Brau’s “Penn Quarter Porter” and “On The Wings Of Armageddon”.
second on the rye manhattan. when it’s just a little warmer out – cold cider, bourbon and a squeeze of lemon juice.
It’s mulled wine time.
Two cold weather favorites: mulled wine and hot cider spiked with rum.
Exactly this! Mulled wine and hot apple cider spiked with rum are my autumn and winter favorites.
Lion’s Tail — bourbon, allspice dram, bitters, lime, sugar. So good. Really anything with bourbon or rye and allspice dram.
This sounds awesome. Do you make your own or buy it?
One cocktail we like when it is cooler out is the angostura sour:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/01/dining/01partiesrex3.html
It’s herbacious and not what you would think (in a good way).
Also agree with everyone on whiskey, “yac”, and stouts. I like to try a new Bell’s Stout each week or so if possible.
I make my own. It’s fairly simple. I use St. Elizabeth allspice dram, though I am sure there other good varieties. Here is a recipe from local bartender Derek Brown: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2009/07/recipe-lions-tail/39679/
The angostura sour looks really interesting. I just might try it this weekend.
Perfect! And sorry–I meant the dram. But you answered that question anyway!
I swapped out the simple syrup/sugar for homemade pumpkin syrup the other night. It was amazing.
The Gris up in Essex, CT, serves up Hot Buttered Rum in the cold weather. It comes in a tiny little mug but it sure does pack a punch! I figured out that it was essentially cider, a lot of Meyer’s Dark Rum, bitters, a sachet of mulling spices, some sugar, heated until piping hot and served with a cinnamon stick and lemon wedge. It warms up the insides quite effectively.
Hm – fall v. winter. OK, I think fall is more fall fruit oriented, and winter is more keeping warm oriented, but there is overlap.
So fall:
Hot spiced cider (I like rum in mine.)
Red wine
Stone fence (a shot of applejack in a glass of cider)
But winter is more like:
hot toddy
hot buttered rum
Gluhwein
mulled mead
anything without the dreaded “pumpkin pie spice”
A Copper Fox rye neat followed with a Victory Storm King Stout to sip on. For some reason they just go well together. I think I will light the fire pit tonight and pull a Storm King that I’ve been cellaring for a year!
Fall is my favorite cocktail season. Lots of allspice, apple, and whiskey. I think tonight I’m going to make a Réveillon for me and my wife.
2 oz Lairds Bottled in Bond Apple Brandy
1/2 oz Poire Williams
1/2 oz Allspice Dram
1/4 oz Dolin Sweet Vermouth
Dash of Fee’s Bitters
Tomorrow night when my folks visit it’ll be Rittenhouse Rye manhattans garnished with some brandied cherries that I made this summer.
I’m ready for happy hour right now.
Warm calvados.
As someone who doesn’t drink, I love Harney and Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice tea. Perfect thing to help you warm up after a nice walk when it’s chilly out.
Bailey’s and Hot chocolate
Fall equals Arrogant Bastard or bourbon.
The only real difference in my fall/winter drinking versus my spring/summer drinking is that I tend to switch from white wine in the warmer months to red wine when it gets cold. Otherwise I drink hard cider and bourbon year round. I’m not a fan of the warm or “seasonally” spiced drinks…
