Dear PoPville – Where to Buy a Christmas Tree?

Eastern Market Lot

“Dear PoPville,

Where are places to buy christmas trees in DC?”

You can see some recommendations from last year here. I also passed the lot at Eastern Market above as well as the Old City Green lot at 9th and N St, NW:

Additionally I received the following emails:

“On Thursday, November 29th at 4pm, Sixth Engine, the firehouse of contemporary cuisine and craft cocktails, is clearing out the patio for their first- ever Mt. Vernon Triangle Christmas Tree Lot. All of the proceeds will benefit the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation. Sixth Engine is also warming the spirit by offering a special gift with every tree purchase, to be redeemed at the neighborhood restaurant.

The Fir-friendly lot runs M-F 4-10 pm & weekends 10am-10pm and will feature both Fraser and Douglas trees along with all the accessories — stands, wreaths, garlands and collectible DCFD ornaments.

Sixth Engine is located on 438 Massachusetts Avenue NW”

“HOLIDAY TREE SALE! On December 8 and 9 from 10-4, come out to buy your holiday tree, gifts and bake goods and support Bancroft Elementary School. The Bancroft PTA is sponsoring our annual holiday tree sale on the school playground (off 18th Street, North of Newton) with trees for every budget, wreaths, roping, tree stands, and baked goods. We also deliver trees in the neighborhood for a small donation. The kids can decorate their own pine cone ornament! We hope to see you there!”

Where will you get your tree?

  • Ross Elementary (near 17th & R NW) will sell trees of various sizes this weekend to benefit their PTA. I’m getting a small tree and a wreath. Can’t wait! Perhaps someone in the know can post the times?

    • Thanks for the mention!

The Ross Tree Sale will be the next three weekends from 10am-4pm.

For those of you exploring elementary school options, this Saturday’s sale coincides with the Ross Open House and Bake Sale.

  • The Columbia Heights farmers market (Saturdays 9am-1pm) will have trees through Dec. 15.

  • Annie’s Ace Hardware has trees.

  • For the past few years my wife and I have ordered trees from Licking Bend Creek Farm ( The trees are always great. They deliver to Adams Morgan Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and Takoma during the week.

I highly recommend them. The trees last forever since they cut them the day before they deliver.

    • I’ll second the recommendation for Licking Creek. Plus, they don’t use pesticides, herbicides, or chemical dyes when they grow them, if you care about that sort of thing.

  • LAMB charter school is selling Christmas trees this Saturday, Dec 1st from 9am to 5pm.

Location: 1375 Missouri Ave, NW (14th and Missouri Ave at Military)

Fraser Fir Trees and Wreaths. Tree prices will range from $40-$80. Stands will be for sale as well. Enjoy hot cider, cocoa, and treats while you shop. All proceeds benefit programs at this great school.

  • Anyone know if Bancroft is having a sale again this year? We tried to purchase greenery last year, but arrived too late.. Can’t find anything about it this year. Thanks!

  • I go to Home Depot on Rhode Island Avenue every year. They pretty much have the best prices and best selections that I have found.

  • Bah Humbug!!

  • Ginkgo Gardens in Capitol Hill – nice trees and wreaths (and LOTS more gifts, etc)

  • big bear cafe will have trees

    • Any idea when? We’ve gotten our tree there the past two years, but haven’t seen any info on the sale yet this year.

      • I got my tree from Painted Hand at BBC last year. I sent them an email the other day and they replied that they would not be selling trees at BBC this year. Don’t know if anyone else will be selling there or not.

  • Frager’s Hardware in SE

  • Dupont Italian Kitchen on 17th and R/ NW

  • Theresa’s up on New York Avenue has good prices. The Whole Foods on P has trees, all look to be around 6-7 feet? They have a “bundle deal” for a tree, a fresh wreath and 20 feet of pine roping (for your stairs, bannister, over the windows?) for 59 bucks, that’s a pretty good deal. My friends go up to a place in Poolesville MD called Homestead Farm for cut-your-own and pre-cut trees, they are open Fri-Sun 9-5, there is also a scenic farm in Va called Snickers Gap for cut-your-own firs and spruces and hot cocoa (they provide a hand saw, no chain saw noises on the peaceful mountainside…) Thinking I’d like to do cut-your-own this year, the kids are the perfect age and I want a tree that will not dry out so fast…

  • “Go Green” – there is a sign for trees on New Hampshire heading north out of the district, somewhere near the border. It says, “Go Green”… get a fresh cut tree. My fiance and I laughed. We almost stopped to talk them about their marketing approach.

  • Depending on where you live, Oyster Elementary in Woodley Park sells trees as well. I’m not sure how their prices compare since we haven’t shopped elsewhere in awhile, but it’s nice to support a neighborhood school.

    • Isn’t Oyster Elementary school actually in Adams Morgan and not in Woodley Park? Or are there 2 schools with really similar names? I thought it was on 19th street.

Do you know if the money will actually go to the elementary school, sort of like a fundraiser? Or is the school just letting people use their lot to sell the trees?

      • Different schools.

Oyster Elementary is up on Calvert.
Oyster-Adams Elementary is on 19th (formerly the John Q. Adams Elementary)

      • Identified answer your first question. As to the second, their announcement about the tree sale last year said all proceeds went to the students, so I assume that is true this year as well.

  • jim_ed

We got ours at Annie’s Hardware in Petworth. Our 7.5 ft frasier fir was less than $30, and according to the guy there, was locally cut in central Va. Excellent deal so far as I can tell.

  • The Inspired Teaching School’s Winterfest will have a great selection of trees for sale. Please stop by 1328 Florida Ave NW on Saturday December 8th (9 AM to dusk) and pick out a tree. Candles, baked goods, children’s books and games will also be for sale. All proceeds benefit the Inspired Teaching School, a D.C. demonstration public charter school.

  • Brent Elementary PTA has a sale every year. I know they are on sale this weekend (Dec 1&2), possibly the following weekend as well. Free delivery if you live in Capitol Hill!

  • Anyone know if any of these places deliver? I’m in Edgewood and don’t have a car. I was over at the Rhode Island Home Depot today just checking out their tree selection and was told that they do deliver their trees but I would prefer to support a local school or business instead.

  • I just got my tree from the small lot at Sixth Engine. Looks like their trees are going fast – mine was one of the few over 6 feet they had. I probably could have gotten a similar tree cheaper elsewhere in town, but the price was the same as I paid at a cut-your-own way out in Middleburg last year, and it comes with a coupon for a free drink at Sixth Engine! All that, and it supports a good cause, too.
