847 Upshur St, NW
Dear PoPville,
My husband and I tried this new restaurant, “Open Kitchen Diner” at 847 Upshur St. NW, just a few doors down from domku. It used to be one of the zillion, tired carry-out places. Now it has been transformed into a super clean, homestyle soul food restaurant with bar seating around the kitchen area and a few tables and chairs. The food is lovingly and carefully prepared–not overcooked. The macaroni and cheese was perfect as were the greens and sweet potatoes. Dinner for two was only $11.00! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve never written to you before or felt the need to recommend a place, but this place deserves our community support!

but the vets who died gave you the right to voice your opinion. God Bless them
i'm guessing they put in some good sound buffering windows? fl ave is LOUD.
^yes. The only danger at this location is being run over by a motorist from Maryland.
Faison's writeups make me crazy. And not in a good "I'm crazy for buying this house!" way.
The Dancing Crab's commercials have to be the worst I've ever seen. The owners saying,...
Thanks for the review! I will check it out now! We need more stuff like this so we know which local businesses to support…and which not to http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jun/12/shopkeepers-drug-arrest-leads-to-call-to-pull-lice/?page=all
PS I think it’s time for a reader review of the Coupe, I have my two cents to add (hint, it isn’t pretty)
Agreed…The Coupe might have been the biggest let-down I’ve experienced since I went to see Star Wars: Episode I.
damn, thats cold.
Agreed. I’ve been there three times and the third time was a strike out.
I agree re the Coupe. Dinner experience (twice) was sub par to say the least. I like it for coffee/breakfast/drinks, but my wife and I refuse to go back for dinner (especially with all the other good options in the area).
if dinner offerings at the Coupe are similar/same as the Diner/Open City… I’m not surprised.
It’s been panned by a lot of yelpers. Was averaging 2.5 stars until it got bumped up to 3 a couple days ago.
The coupe I mean, not Open Kitchen.
I’ve been to the coupe twice now and have to say I disagree. I quite like it. I wish it was a little cheaper, but hey…
I agree that the Coupe food is very good. (Yes the service is slow, but this is what happens in every new place I’ve ever dined in.) It’s a quality spot in a part of town that has needed something like this for a long time. If the business at the Coupe’s sister businesses (Diner/Tryst/Open City) is any indication, there will often be people lined out the door. If you don’t like it, don’t eat there. Please. This will decrease my wait for their great food.
The coupe needs French Toast and they need to get rid of that horrible sausage they serve. Their waffles were pretty frickin good though, wish they upped their pie game and added chocolate chip waffles like Tryst had, but all in all it’s a great late night spot to me, they just need to work out the menu!
I’ve wondered about this place lately, but we have yet to try it. Thanks for the insight!
More diners in DC. Build more diners… and we will come.
+1,000,000,000,000
yes please.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Petworth needs a diner that’s a real dinner. Less Open City/The Diner more like the diner offspring that would come from Ted’s Bulletin and Florida Ave grill getting together. I’m excited to see that Open Kitchen is good, I was planning on visiting this weekend.
Thanks for mentioning that they have tables! I thought it was only bar seating. I’m excited to try it!
This is helpful info for me too. Thanks!
Yes thanks for this! I was actually snagging some clothes from Willow the other day and asked a few people about it. The response was lukewarm, but I’m glad you had a good experience.
I’m looking forward to checking it out – so happy about the good reviews.
The dinner we had at Open Kitchen was good….the mac and cheese is awesome! This restaurant is a nice addition to the neighborhood and it is nice and clean inside.
I went for dinner last Friday night. No wait for a table, but 25 minutes to get my beer (the bar was backed up). The food was good but the portions were small and it was a little expensive. I will give it another try….
Looking forward to testing out Open Kitchen as a family friendly lunch or dinner place. Want to take my kids out but Domku, DC Reynolds, Chez Billy etc. either are too bar-like, slow to the millionth degree service, or wrong menu for kids. Somebody should open a place lin Petworth like Family Table (in Frederick) that’s welcoming for all ages, with a decent bar and warm atmosphere, and there would be lines out the door. The old Hitching Post’s weird urine smell did not go over well with the family, not sure if it’s better now?
