And that was when it was still on what is now the site of the Kennedy Center. It was moved to SW in 1966.
Sorry – dismantled in 66. Re-erected in 1968.

It was originally described as standing “at the base of New Hampshire Avenue.”
Zooming in on that picture shows that the business is called “Lee’s Stables.” I wonder if we can easily get an address for that. That would answer the question, I think.

My roommate used to make fun of this memorial all the time, b/c he thought it was absurd ‘that they built a memorial based on that stupid movie.” I never had the heart to let him know he was an idiot…
