Retired bomb-sniffin’ Marine pups need Homes – UPDATE: Email was a Hoax

The United States Marine Corps has around 400 IED (Improvised Explosive Device) sniffing dogs that are being decommissioned and need forever homes. They all need forever homes. Most of the dogs are breeds such as: Labradors, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, German Shepherds & Rottweilers. These dogs are all incredibly well-trained. Many of them have served in war zones and are responsible for saving countless American, NATO and foreign lives. The dogs are based in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Adoptive families must be able to travel to D.C. to pick up the dogs or arrange transport at their own expense.

Update: Email was a hoax. Some ridiculous fools out there.

  • I just called and emailed. They said this was a false email–there are no dogs available.

  • FYI, I just emailed this guy Brian and he said that they are not seeking homes for dogs, so I guess the information in this posting is not correct.

  • That’s really a shame if they’re not actually available for adoption. One of my neighbors has a retired police dog, and let me tell you, that is the most obedient dog in the dog park every time! He always puts my little pup to shame – call both their names out and the police dog is there in three seconds sitting at your feet waiting for his next command, and mine is still wandering around completely oblivious by the fence trying to eat a dandelion five minutes later…

Update: All Dogs Have Been Adopted! Thanks to all who’ve done so.

  • I am so glad they found new homes. In the past dogs like this were destroyed. Glad the marines woke up.

  • Great news that the dogs have been adopted. But I hope their new owners realize what they are getting into. Dogs with this kind of training are working dogs that will need a lot of task driven exercising. If the new owners are not prepared to keep the dogs busy, they may end up seeing some behavioral problems.

  • It isn’t that they have been adopted. This situation doesn’t exist. This entire email is a hoax that has circulated many times. Adopt. Just can’t from here.

  • I really hope that this is a hoax. Otherwise, is the US government going to breeders and helping sustain a market for bringing more dogs into the world (when we already have so many homeless animals euthanized) and then abandoning those dogs when they’ve served their purpose? I would like to say that would be unbelievable and I hope it is. With the military budget what it is they better have plan for providing for animals they send into minefields and so on. Jeez.

  • I was a puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind for many years. Sometimes when a dog isn’t suitable to guide work they will let the ATF train them to become a bomb detection dog. One of the dogs I raised went on to do that work with the military in Israel.
