  • Ordinary or extraordinary? Both.
    It’s something that was not uncommon when it was new (on this type of porchless entry), but over the decades they have been removed and/or replaced (see the neighboring stoop in the background of the photo) in such numbers that the ones which remain are rare.
    In either case, lovely.

  • My hunch is these served as “boot scrapers.” Old houses often had them…. metal bits at which you could scrape mud off your boots before entering.
