A new wine boutique is coming to a prime corner space (currently home to Backstage Theatrical Supply Store) on Barracks Row. Their website says:
“We’re a Washington, DC-based wine shop specializing in unique, small production wines and expert educational events that enhance the experience of tasting and sharing wine. Our wine boutique caters to the discriminating palate of connoisseurs as well as to customers who are new to wine and interested in learning more or simply trying new wine styles.”

Very sorry about that. We upgrading the whole site which should be finished in the next...
No, deff not a 2013
probably pre owned
Great idea, but the regulatory work would not be a walk in the park. And since this is...
looks the same to me, except the addition of the ugly pergola in the corner and the fact...
does this mean the costume shop (open year-round) is being replaced?
That’s what the word on the street is, unfortunately.
Oh no! Backstage is fantastic. Does anyone know if they’re relocating?
I heard, in passing, that they’re moving to a Northern VA location.
Oh wow:
“Backstage, Inc., has been serving the theatrical needs of Washington, DC, since 1981.”

Yeah, they’re not just a hokey pop-up October costume shop. They’re the Real Deal. And they sell dance shoes/apparel. Sad to see them go.

Yeah, Backstage is a DC institution. Didn’t they used to be in DuPont? I keep getting them and The Pleasure Chest mixed up. I spent too much of my youth in Earthworks. Let that be a lesson, kids: Say No to Drugs!
@monkeyrotica If I remember correctly they were on P St around 21st where the Starbucks is now.
You remember correctly
I need to go hit up Backstage for some things before they move. Very sad to see them leaving the district!
Hello! Thank you so much for helping to spread the word about DCanter! We are thrilled to be joining the wonderful restaurants and other retail stores on Barracks Row and getting to know our future customers from Capitol Hill and beyond. As residents of the area, we too are sad to see Backstage go. As many of you know that they are not only a great costume shop but also the closest! Please do support them this season! They will remain in the current location till the end of the year, and as we understand it, they will be relocating in Northern Virginia. We are grateful for the opportunity to open our store and can’t wait to share our enthusiasm for wine and craft beers with all of you! Please visit our blog for updates: http://www.dcanterwines.com/blog and sign up for eNewsletters!
Can’t wait! It’s nice to see Capitol Hill residents opening a business in the neighborhood.
The one time I went to Backstage for a Halloween costume the place reeked of pot. It’s not normally a smell that bothers me, but it was so strong and the shop is so small that I got a migraine from it. I don’t have fond memories of this place and it doesn’t seem to get much business outside of October, so I’m not sad to see it go. We don’t have a nice wine shop in the neighborhood (Schneider’s is great but a little far) so I’m happy about DCanter coming.
Tragic! I love Back Stage! Where else can you get a Betty Draper style crinoline on a moment’s notice?
wow it really sucks that backstage is closing.
i remember driving in from silver spring when i lived in the suburbs to go to backstage maybe 10 years ago and thinking it was in an incredibly sketchy neighborhood. things have certainly changed.
Backstage will be missed. Best of luck to all concerned. Loved that store.
We have enough wine bars/cellars/etc. Very sad to see Backstage leave. Booooooo!
Nooo!!! I love backstage. We don’t need another wine place!
I went to backstage once for some wigs for a party – they guy behind the counter couldn’t have been nastier. The only other time I had to deal with them (over the phone for a large order of body paint for a mud run) they were really helpful and funny.
I love having a local shops for everything but customer service is really important. I wish them well.
backstage is awesome. wish they could have stayed in dc, but someone else in this thread says they moving to va. can anyone confirm that via a link?
Noo!!! Where else can you get ballet slippers and dance attire in DC? We need more diverse retail in CapHill… I love food and wine and stuff, but it seems like that’s all we have over here!
