Dear PoPville,
My husband and I are having some trouble with the built-in (also known as box) gutter on our home. In the photo above (which isn’t my house, but it’s the same style) it’s the white gutter that is above the top story windows and attached to the roof. It looks like crown molding, but it’s actually a gutter.Almost every Wardman Style home in the area has one, but the roofers we have had come out all say they can’t/don’t know how to replace them as is and would need to just install a new unattached gutter, which would ruin the historic look of the house. Has anyone in the area had any luck replacing these gutters? We can’t re-lign it because the wood behind it is also rotting and will need to be replaced. Would love any suggestions folks have.

Hope you get her back soon
Unfortunately, many of the older residents would prefer empty storefronts over anything...
I had a Yorkie and it pains me to recall thoughts of when my see you next Tuesday gf left...
I hope your prayers are answered.
Our thoughts are with you.
Try Wagner Roofing. They do historic restorations and have a very good reputation.
you can try these guys: http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2012/10/dear-popville-scam-alert/
I know a guy who’ll do it for 30 bucks.
hahaha… my first thought as well
I find it difficult to believe that you live downtown and yet do not know the name of your Friendly Neighborhood Hobo Grifter. For a mere $30, he’ll start a halfassed job and walk away after 30 minutes to buy drugs.
You’re giving credit for half an ass too much.
I don’t do drugs! (Cough cough.)
I just had an excellent experience with Cole Roof Systems; highly rated on Angie’s List.
I second the recommendation for Cole Roofing – they’re fantastic.
I have a tennis racket and bird cage that will solve all your problems.
These guys may be a bit expensive, but they’ll do it right. They fixed my original 1919 porch roof and box gutter.

I highly recommend D. S. & H. Home Improvement, Inc. does excellent work and are very good price wise and will not waste any time or your money getting it done. They are also private contractors for a few government and non government non-profit org.s here in D.C. Call the owner Donovan Grant, his number is (202) 320-4585. You won’t be disappointed.
We did this. It is a big job as when they get in there they often find rotted wood that also needs to be replaced. We ripped ours out completely and replaced with copper. I recommend this even though it is on the pricey side.
This is the OP, thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions!
We did this last year – used MG roofing. Wasn’t cheap, but they did a lovely job.
We used Family Roofing who do a fine job. We had a similar problem and it came down to two options. 1. Seal the gutters with melted rubber that will fill in the gaps including over the rotted wood. Costs $2,000 with a 10 year warranty. 2. Remove the rotted wood an lay down a new metal gutter which would cost upwards of $10,000 depending on how much damage there is to the wood. MG roofers have a great reputation as well and gave us the same assessment but their prices were like four times higher than Family Roofing.
I recommend RW Kibler. They refinished our entire front mansard. Wagner will do a good job as well, just don’t waste your time contacting Maggio. Let me be blunt – it won’t be cheap regardless who you use.
Our shelf gutter looks great, and best of all it’s no longer a bird house. Contact me if you to want to check it out.
