Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Revel: I am so happy MPD caught the 3 guys who beat Mr. Maslin.

Rant: No amount of time will be able to pay back what Mr. Maslin’s family has now to endure.

  • RAVE: It’s a lovely day. And it’s Friday. And it’s pay day!!!
    RANT: No rants yet…

  • Did anyone see the scary/crazy guy on U Street last night threatening people (especially women)?

  • Rave: My dad is coming down to visit this weekend; love spending time with him!

Rant: The guy who used to cut my hair left the salon a few months back and I haven’t been thrilled with the replacement stylist they set me up with. Hate having to go back to the drawing board to find someone who can cut curly hair. Any recommendations?

    • Fiddleheads on 17th is fantastic, and Tina is amazing. I highly recommend it.

      • anon. gardener

+1 on Fiddleheads. And their prices are reasonable.

      • SouthwestDC

I wasn’t crazy about Fiddleheads. The haircut I got was nothing special, and the products they used were very drying.

I used to go to Elena at Bang salon (16th and U location). She has curly hair herself and really knows what she’s doing. She’s has the distinction of being the only stylist I’ve been to who can blow-dry my hair and not turn it into a puffy ball of frizz.

Once I grew my hair out long and just needed someone to touch up the layers I started going to a cheap place in my neighborhood, so I haven’t been to Bang in a while. They used to only charge $35 for a haircut but I’m sure the prices have gone up since then.

    • We’ve had this conversation on here before, so I’m sure a few people will chime in. I like Garrett at Spalon, also on 17th Street. He used to be at Fiddleheads years ago.

    • Janna at Parlour (http://parlourdc.com/) on U Street. She amazing at the Curly Girl… and fantastic at coloring if you need that as well. I have been going to her for 5 years now – she can’t be beat!

  • Rave: Going to Paris in less than a week!!
    Rant: leaking roof 🙁

  • pablo .raw

    Rave: Lots of plans
    Rave: Lots of energy
Rave: Gaining weight. Yes it’s a rave in my case!

  • RANT: Being a branch manager for a bank is the worst job ever!!!!

  • Rant: Meeting that ends around 2:30 between the office and home. Not late enough to just go home but by the time I get back to the office I probably won’t be able to do much.
Rant: I feel too guilty when I skip out of work early despite the fact I work a ton of late nights and weekend.
Rave: I have a job that I like and do meaningful work.
    Rave: It’s the weekend!

  • Rave: Half day today!

Rave: Adopted and took my dog home one year ago today. And her birthday is next week!

    Rant: It might rain tonight.

  • Rave: Working from home/teleworking starting today.

Rant: Going to miss working downtown and being close to everything especially the gym (loved crossing the street to go to the gym).

Rave: May end my gym membership and start running to and from Sherwood rec which would save me money and burn even more calories.

Rant: Just learned that Kevin Hart is going to be here the Saturday night of homecoming.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Right before my alarm went off I had a dream that it was Saturday.

    Rant: Grumpy

Rave: something will come to me later on today.

  • Rant: Got a raise at my review a few weeks ago. Still haven’t seen it on my paychecks. Now I get to have an awkward conversation with my boss…

Rave: At least no major plans this weekend & have time to recover.

  • Rant: SICK, ugh.
Rave: Tomorrow, at this time, I’ll be rapelling down/hanging off the side of a building in downtown DC 😀
Rant: Crazy rain and lightning made the drive to and from Central PA last night terrible!
Rave: Saw my grandfather (no hugs since I’m sick) and saw an awesome lecture given in memory of my grandmother.

  • rave: holycow, u street was crazy last night. didn’t realize the weekend started early for everyone in dc … i gotta get out more.
rant: getting up early the next day….

  • Question: Anyone know anything about this band Ra Ra Raspootin that’s playing at the 930 Club tonight? I saw it in The Express today.

  • rave: fall weather! love it

rant:applying for jobs and writing cover letters where i have to write a salary requirement. i’m in a post grad fellowship now that doesn’t pay much, in a field that doesn’t pay much and having to write a salary that i know is low to live in nyc but too high for this position is really annoying.

    • anon. gardener

Just don’t include it. The question is not what you have been paid before, but what are they prepared to offer you to do the job? If you feel compelled to give a number, give a very wide range – you don’t want to low-ball yourself, and you don’t want to limit your ability to negotiate.

  • rant: the three assholes arrested are charged only with armed robbery..why not attempted murder? they beat this man into unconsiousness and left him to die on the street.
Rave: ultrasound today at 25 weeks and baby is looking good, even though I still worry non stop.
rant 2: I have lived in DC 15 years but now that Im having a kid, it really does change my perspective on living here. Would love to make a go of it but damn, DC still has a ways to go for families.

    • If they were tried for attempted murder they’d surely walk. That’d be a tough one to prove in court.

    • I’m wondering about this, too. Maslin was obviously assaulted to within an inch of his life. I’m not a lawyer, but wouldn’t assault be more powerful than just armed robbery? You can use a gun to hold someone up and not hurt them physically. This man was help up with a gun (a BB gun, but with the same psychological effect), and then mercilessly beaten. I’m not sure how you prove that they wanted to kill him, but the beating he took makes me think they were extremely angry and may have wanted to kill him. I still can’t believe a hate crime classification doesn’t come into play. I can easily see that being a factor, but you’d need proof (and I don’t think Maslin is in good enough shape to testify to that or he may not even remember)…. I wish him and his family all the best. This incident is a sobering reminder that there are bad people lurking in nice neigbhorhoods, and the justice system always seems insufficient for addressing the many problems we have.

      • Why would this be classified as a hate crime? Is there any evidence the perps attacked him b/c of his race/nationality/religion, or screamed racial epithets at him as they assaulted him?

        • I don’t have any proof that this was a hate crime- it is speculation. However, when you hear of someone taking a really bad beatdown, like this poor man suffered, I think it could only be fueled by hate and anger (Watching too many forensics shows taught me that strangers typically kill each other with guns or in ways that do not involve direct contact; whereas, knives are usually used for crimes of passion, indicating the people know each other). If this was a simple phone and credit card steal, why beat the guy almost to death? There was something personal about this, and yet these perps didn’t know the guy… A hate crime is the only way I can begin to explain how a robbery escalated into such barbaric cruelty.

  • From the files of inappropriate Facebook behavior, my brother-in-law, a plastic surgeon, has decided to use FB for marketing, and every afternoon he posts a quotation on beauty, accompanied by a link to his website, which more often than not is a picture of before-and-after boob shots. Yes, I’m sitting at work, flip over to Facebook, and there are naked breasts on my monitor. What is the man thinking?

    • I sincerely hope he had permission to use those pictures on his FB. If not, this sounds like a huge ethical (and probably legal) violation of a patient’s right to privacy (even if no names or faces are shown). I wouldn’t want to see a doctor putting pictures up like that on his FB page.

    • Doesn’t Facebook often remove pictures showing nudity?

The brother-in-law’s judgment sounds really bad. At minimum, you might want to “hide” him from your feed.

You might also want to report him to Facebook and — given the possibility of patients’ photos being used without permission — perhaps even the medical practice he works for (although doing the latter would probably be a good way to cause a family feud).

      • The pictures are on a link to his practice’s website, which has a whole section of before and after shots–these are plainly used with permission. No, I’m not going to report my brother-in-law to FB or to his practice (which he co-owns). These are clinical and not illegal or pornographic. It’s just tacky, that’s all.

  • Revel: My anniversary in the govt is coming up and I will move up to the next level of leave-earning. I don’t use it very much (except for use-or-lose) but it’s nice to have those weeks saved up.

Big Revel: Work anniversary also means a step increase, which is still allowed under the pay freeze. Thank goodness, because:

Big Rant: My rent is going up again – the maximum allowed under controls, which will completely consume the step increase raise. I appreciate that I am not losing ground, but it sure would be nice to get ahead once in a while.
Also: This rent increase means my rent has increased about 60% since I moved in 10 years ago BUT it’s still cheaper than anywhere else I might move to in such a great (car-free, in-town) location. (And a lot less than a new tenant would pay now.)

  • Rave: It’s Friday! Really looking forward to going home, probably falling asleep on the couch while watching TV, and being in bed by 11:00. why can’t I get to bed that early during the week?

Rant: Major problems waking up on time these past few weeks and have been sleeping through MULTIPLE alarms. Couple this with what seems to be worse traffic and boy, is it hard to get to work on time.

Rave: Opera in the Outfield with friends tomorrow!

  • Rave: Finally made it to the New Orleans Po’ Boy shop in DuPont. I will be going back often.

    Rave: Kindle HD arrives today!

  • Rave: Another step closer to making my dream career a reality. Submitted another application for financial aid for grad school.
Rant: Still waiting on 2 letters of recommendation and I’m trying to submit on Sunday. Stomach in nervous knots.

  • Sounds like a pretty typical Thursday night on U Street, to me.

  • Things are always really crazy this time of year. It’s all the new college kids who have recently arrived who have a long way to go before they have mastered drinking in a dignified manner. It’ll get better over the next few weeks.

  • Bicyclist hit at Wisconsin & Q – i didn’t see what happened, the paramedics were putting someone into the ambulance a few minutes ago. The car’s back windshield was smashed though, and my (slightly grumpy ) bus driver’s comment was that it was the 2nd or 3rd one he’d seen today.
