…and also the ones that were killed before. I’m originally from Nicaragua, and moved to the USA one year after 9/11, I actually was in NY and DC 2 weeks before the event in 2001. This country which is now my country, supported a civil war against my other country; I am one of thousands of young people who were forced to join the military and fight. 50,000 people died in that war, I knew some of them who were good friends and members of my family. I delivered the bodies of some of these soldiers to their parents.
My perspective then, it’s a little bit different. War wherever it comes from only benefits a few, hurts everybody else. I say this with all the respect that everybody deserves. Peace to all, and may future generations don’t have to deal with tragic events like the one we remember today.

I think you are trolling here. If not, I am not sure I can say anything that would address such a ludicrous opinion. I will chalk it up to trolling or naivete. I just wish the 2 year old, the 3 year old, or the 4 year old on the flights from Boston with their parents had a chance to decide whether or not to be frivolous people. I think about what their parents must have felt looking at the last terrified moments of their child’s life. But yeah, keep trolling.

I rode my bike to work in Crystal City today, and the railing of the 14th St. bridge was adorned with flags.

I could see the Pentagon in the distance. It was a nice tribute and gave me a chance to reflect on that day, which was much like today—sparkly, blue, and beautiful.

Here here. Or at least treat gun offenses more seriously and give real jail time for gun crimes and repeated offenders. To say nothing of the failure of DYRS and the fact that this guy was supposedly in their custody. Having said all that, I still wonder what sort of environment or society we have here in the district that would cause a 16 year old to kill someone for nothing, just so he could show his friends he was a bad ass. Enjoy life in prison bad ass.

Anon @ 11:10 – explain your statement that moral failings led to 9/11 in the first place. That is a very provocative thing to say that is difficult to gloss over on a day when we mourn the mass murder of 3000 men, women, and children.

9/11 was a tragic day. Also tragic are the many thousands of people we have since killed (and are still killing) in our war mongering around the world (and those who serve in our military who are committing suicide at such an alarmingly increasing rate). To quote the Friend’s Society: War is Not the Answer.

Also, let’s remember Neil Godleski. Big news for the city and Petworth – his alleged killer was found guilty of pre-meditated and faces possible life without parole. I think about Neil often and hope our city leaders will continue to try to do more to take guns out of the hands of young people.

dgoppler, I agree that the spectacles are unseemly and offputting, and I wouldn’t want them. But a moment of silence, a recognition, is respectful and acknowledges what happened without turning into some mawkish display.
