Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or rejoice about daily life in DC.

Rave: Gouda cheese and Jelly Beans.
    That’s it.

  • Rave: watching dnc speeches that i missed last night, and feeling inspired. this is what progress looks like!

  • Rave: Best Birthday in years!
Rave: Recently announced plans to move out of the area to all my friends and family and they have been amazingly supportive and helpful.
Rant: Let the stress of moving begin.

  • Vent: (can’t rant because they are truly a blessing) My kids are all out of sorts and driving me and the wife batty these past couple days. Someone call Nanny 911.

  • Rave: I am looking forward to attending Howard University’s Homecoming game against Morgan State University on October 20, 2012.

Rant: I am concern about too many gun robberies in Ward 4 and many of my neighbors are apathetic. Why is there so much apathy in 16th Street Heights and no one seems to care or speak out about public safety? The residents in Shepherd Park will not allow this to happen in their neighborhood.

  • Rave: Dehumidifier sucked out buckets of moisture from the air in my apt.
Rant: Still hasn’t gotten below 65% humidity in there, at least according to the dehumidifier. I dread my electric bill this month.

  • Rant: Woodpeckers. For the past week, a wood pecker decided to bang on my roof and/or walls for 15 minutes at 4AM. If you haven’t experienced this, it sounds like a small jackhammer and can easily wake you up from a sound sleep.

Anyone know a way to get it to stop?

  • Speed cameras… There’s a new one on K street right before the Whitehurst freeway that appeared out of nowhere, just after it there’s a red light camera. Now they all look like utility boxes. They’re moved around frequently. There’s also a car stationed in the 9th street tunnel that is conveniently placed where it makes traffic back up so that you can’t change lanes… I thought these were primarily for school safety, but as they begin to be deployed on every DC road, drivers are getting more upset and acutely aggressive and angry. I can’t help thinking that the city is trying to make up money lost due to bad budgeting and theft that is being left unchecked. I’m preparing for all of this to come to a “boil” next year… We used to be just fine before cameras came along, I’m glad to be able to say I was here when they didn’t exist.

    • “[D]rivers are getting more upset and acutely aggressive and angry.” = “Jack5 is getting more upset and acutely aggressive and angry”?

I’m not exactly enthusiastic about speed cameras, but dealing with them seems to be pretty simple: Don’t speed.

      • You must obey all laws. OBEY.

        • Recognition of the general validity of not killing your neighbors by speeding isn’t the same as blind acceptance of Orwellian law systems.

          • umm…video cameras everywhere for everything is Orwellian…ESPECIALLY now that we know how the federal government uses them…google “Trapwire” and then yesterday it came out all Iphone info of all users is stored in an FBI database…the FBI said today the NYPD has violated rights on a level that would shame hoover… We are an orwellian state…you’re just too conditioned.

    • If only there were some way, some measure one could take, to avoid detection of speed cameras. It’s not coming to me right now.

    • The cameras are not the problem, the drivers who refuse to accept the obvious workaround are the problem.

    • anon. gardener

I hear you, jack5. The annoying thing about speed cameras is that they prevent you from going the speed limit. Drivers see one and dramatically slow down – if the speed limit is 35, they do 20. That’s what’s so frustrating – I don’t want to speed, I just want to do the speed limit, and all these stupid drivers hold up the works for everyone.

      • Agreed, I will not feel guilty about driving, sometimes we all have to go a bit above the limits, but those of us who believe in free will and in the common good of man should be trusted to uphold reasonable laws. just because a person mostly rides metro doesn’t mean they’re immune from the effects of unjust taxation, its also why your transit costs are going up.

  • Rant: My fiance’s 3 year old cat suddenly died yesterday, while she was alone at home. She, and the other cat, are having a rough time with it. It was always kind of a sickly cat, but seemed to be getting better. Vet thinks it was a heart attack.

Semi-Rave: Her friends are in town visiting, so we all took her to her favorite restaurant last night to try to cheer her up.

    • Oh, no! My sympathies to you and your fiancee… it’s always tough to lose a beloved pet, even more so when it’s a sudden and unexpected event.

And also sympathies to the other kitty- I firmly believe that they know what is going on, and they grieve in their own way as well. When my 17 year old cat passed away a few years ago, the younger kitty avoided the room in which he died for months, and never slept in the particular cat bed again (even though it used to be a favorite napping spot). The only conclusion we could come to was that the location was somehow traumatic for him.

Oh that’s sad! I’m sorry for her loss.

    • claire

That’s my worst nightmare (I even start to worry sometimes when I’m home and my cat is out of sight) – my condolences.

      • Thanks everyone. It was pretty traumatic for her, and she’s dealing surprisingly well. We’ll see how she, the other cat, and the dog adapt.

    • Poor kitty! My condolences.

Rant: Late summer/fall allergies. Why do I have to be so allergic to DC?

Rave: DC is still a great city that I’m proud to call home.

Rave: Bought a new digital SLR! Can’t wait for the upgrade to arrive!
Rant: Had to buy the new one before I can sell the old one (take photos nearly daily for my blog) so now I’m out some significant money. Anyone interested in buying a Canon Rebel XTI this weekend?
Rave: Craigslist. Love being able to list things on there and sell them with so little effort! (And when I was trying to buy more things instead of selling them, I loved it for that, too!)

    • What are you upgrading to? The Canon Rebel XTI would be a huge upgrade for me but I’m not sure I can afford it right now.

      • claire

Upgrading to the Nikon D3200 – still a starter level digital SLR but much nicer specs (24MP, 1080p video, etc). Have heard that Nikons are more color accurate, too, but also not as intuitive to use (which is okay by me since I’m the kind of nerd that reads the entire user manual). I’d try to convince you to buy my Rebel XTI, but honestly, your best bet is probably Amazon (used for around $300).

  • Rave – Promotion! effective next week. Excited for a sweet raise and new responsibilities. Nervous about being in a managerial role (again).

Rant – Waiting for lab results. *grits teeth*

  • Rant: Colleagues who think they know everything about everything and can’t play as a team member to save their lives. But they’ve managed to convince the people who count that they are indespensible and blame their inability to work with anyone on everyone else. Argh.

  • Rave: Finally got a quote for delivery of some antique furniture I bought.

Rant: It’s about twice what I was hoping to pay.

Rave: It’s still affordable, and it means that I’m not toting the furniture.

  • Rave: Fun things planned for the next three weekends in September.

Rant: Having stuff planned for the next three weekends makes me feel a little bit overbooked. I’m not really much of a planner.

Other Rant: Work travel tentatively planned for the last week in September, something I usually manage to avoid; I hate leaving my dog.

Rave: The person who I am potentially traveling with.

  • Rave: Therapy. Finally adjusting my mentality of “PLAN IT OUT. PLAN OUT YOUR LIFE” to “Go with the flowww.” It’s been a long time coming, but my therapist has really helped me achieve a sense of calm. Thank you, therapist!

Rave: In a good place physically and mentally.

Rant: Nasty, swamp-like weather. Bring on fall colors, hoodies, crisp air and the smell of apples and cinnamon!

    • Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes = the true harbinger of fall.

      • How I wish I could share in the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte love! I always get bloated and sugar-high after drinking one. And the pumpkin spice flavor is not nearly strong enough for my taste. I think a lot of people like the idea of a pumpkin spice latte more than the latte itself.

      • Not sure if I’ve ever tried the pumpkin spice latte, but I used to love the gingerbread latte. I should try it again this fall…

  • Rant: Forgot the DNC was on and ended up watching Dance Moms instead.

Rave: Been busy all morning, let’s hope that continues into this afternoon!

Rave: Having lunch with awesome former coworkers!

  • Rant/Rave: Not sure if this is a rant or rave. Sat next to a super awkward date last night where the guy regaled the girl with stories of how he doesn’t remember his evenings out and she giggled- seriously, no sounds passed through her lips but giggles and an occassional suprised interjection – “oh no!”, “you didn’t”! Seemed like they liked each other though and they definitely entertained me!

Rave: Heading out to the barn tonight, biking to work this morning, and ignoring the mess and disorganization around my apartment for the time being to just get out and enjoy being outside!

  • Rave: Got a “good morning” text guy I’ve been crushing on.
Rant: Despite him mostly initiating our text convos, it always takes him a bajillion years to respond.

  • rave: cirque du soleil performers were in Union Station at 1 pm previewing the show Totem!
rant: the said show is being performed at National Harbor, with no convenient public transportation connections

Rant: I wake up every morning and dread going into work. I’ve been in the same position for 3 years, every attempt at promotion has been denied. I bust my butt everyday in this meaningless position for nothing while watching managements favorites move up in the ranks. And the worst part is no one will tell me what I need to improve upon to get a promotion. I’m told I’m great, I’m valued, everyone loves me. So why can’t I get a freakin promotion?! I’m looking for another job, but my lack of degree makes had made it impossible to find a decent paying job with benefits like the one I have now. So i’m stuck for the time being.

Rant: I haven’t heard from the guy I’m seeing all week. Its a casual thing, but lack of communication drives me up the wall. I feel like i’m being rejected.

Rave: might be going to the beach this weekend.
