1212 18Th Street, NW
Thanks to a reader for sending word:
“The Mattress Discounters on 18th and Connecticut closed yesterday. I can’t say that it surprised me, I’d always thought that it was a strange location for a mattress store. Hopefully something cool, and more appropriate, will go in there quickly.”
I’ll def. keep a close eye on this prime space to see who eventually takes over the space.

I don’t think that location is inappropriate for a retail store selling things that nearby residents need. A bar or restaurant would certainly be cooler, as would some other kind of retail, but a mattress store is hardly inappropriate.
I hear that they are looking for a spot in Columbia Heights. Apparently that area is underserved by mattress retailers.
+1
Or Tenleytown.
Oh, great. Now how the hell am I supposed to find the 18th Street Lounge!
This made me LOL… I always used Mattress Discounters as a landmark when explaining to friends/acquaintances how to find Eighteenth Street Lounge.
Haha, same here. And I’m sure someone cited the same landmark the first time I went.
I read somewhere that a Pei Wei asian diner is going to take over the spot.
Lulzzzz. I seriously hope this is snark, but I’m afraid it might be true.
Ugh, it’s true! Awful food.

They had OK mattress deals and good delivery. Much prefer that over another crap chain restaurant.
I bought two mattresses there – very convenient for downtown non-car owning dwellers, particularly before Zipcar was in DC.
Let’s pray for another much-needed bank…
Haha…it’s funny cuz it’s true. Maybe a cell phone store? We’re getting yet another one on14th in Columbia Heights. Apparently Cricket, Radio Shack, T Mobile and Best Buy weren’t adequately serving the market. Now Sprint is moving in.
Gee, i walked down there from Adams Morgan in ’96 to buy a mattress. Seemed like a great location for a mattress store. Though it wouldn’t have worked without delivery…
It was not “inappropriate”, there are lots of residences to the north and west.
I needed a boxpring once and thought I’d try Mattress Discounters first because they were so close. But it turned out they charged more for delivery than places outside the Beltway. I considered enlisting a friend to help me carry it down the street but that seemed like too much of a hassle. So I’m not sure there’s any real benefit to a mattress store being close to where people live– it’s not like smaller housewares that you can just carry home.
