Dear PoPville,
Do you know anything about the white bike on Columbia Rd -there’s one locked in front of the old Design Within Reach store (1838 Columbia Road, NW). I am assuming it’s a ghost bike because it’s freshly painted all white. I live very near there and don’t recall anything recent about a deadly bike wreck – do you know?

The kitchen is counted in the 22x22.
These people new perfectly well they were going against zoning by making this single...
Walls of glass - Always bad! ALWAYS!
Hallway + Bath + Kitchen + laundry = 200. I have no problem believing that.
A couple of years ago, someone (maybe a PoP reader?!) made a public google calendar with...
No idea – I noticed it last night, too, when we were going to dinner.
maybe someone just wanted a white bike
Turns out it wasn’t actually a ghost bike. It was old man Johnson with a clever disguise, lighting and sound effects. And he would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!
Hearted. So. Much.
there are a few around the city. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dmarimondcart/7366006492/in/photostream
Happened during April of 2010 during the Nuclear Summit at the DC Convention Center. Tons of world leaders poured into DC and the surrounding area was completely locked down. 10 ft high barriers, dump trucks blocking avenues to the surrounding streets of the convention center, check points, large military/police presence, etc. It was a nightmare for those of us living in the Mt Vernon/Chinatown area.
Anyways, the large troop carriers and Mack trucks were operating in the area as well to move people around or change traffic flow by blocking different streets off. During the evening commute a woman who worked at the National Academy of Science was biking up one of the cut off streets; she was struck and killed by the truck as it was backing up. A very sad event.

The ghost bike for the woman killed during the Nuclear Summit is at 12th and NY Ave NW, close to where she was run over. This bike is at 18th and Columbia, apparently, so it must be where another cyclist was killed.
sometimes a bike is just a bike
I saw this bike being unlocked by a young woman on Sunday as I left the Adams-Morgan Day Belmont Arts Walk. I asked her, and it is not a ghost bike, simple her personal bike that she choose to paint white.
simply
I speculate painting a bike white (as with pink) deters theft.
And increases night-time visibility a lot.
Unless it’s during a snowstorm.
Now I am picturing a nighttime visibility alot.
