You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or rejoice about daily life in DC.

The Dancing Crab's commercials have to be the worst I've ever seen. The owners saying,...
God you people are boring. Why not more chatter about their footwears?
Cheesy and cheap. Something you'd expect the Montgomery, Al. Convention's Bureau to run...
People thought it was a good look at the time.
See also: wood-paneled basements,...
Struggling with tenant issues. Thinking I should have just sold. For all those that complain about landlords, let me tell you that the other side of the ledger can suck pretty bad too.
Not if you’re careful with tenant selection. I’ve never had a lick of trouble.
Rave: Early release today!
Rant: People and their hateful politics. I don’t know when hate became such a popular platform but it’s exhausting to listen to and tolerate. Especially when it comes from your own family.
I agree, politics today can be very distasteful. However, people have a right to their opinion. What do you consider hateful politics?
Rave: The United States of America.
Rave: A country where it is possible for one man to work behind a counter as a bartender and immigrant so that his son can ultimately stand behind a podium in front of millions.
Rubio Rubio gave a great speech — one of the best I have ever seen. I am a Democrat, but I really believe this guy will be President one day.
Rubio? Not a chance.
Rubio is an ethnic huckster who lied about his family’s background to get into the good graces of the wingnut part of the Cuban-American community, then dissembled and lied even more when he got caught in his first lie. Even more disturbing, and equally revealing of his deeply flawed personal integrity, is the fact that he used a Florida Republican Party credit card for his own personal expenses and lied even more energetically and creatively when caught stealing from the party to which he belonged and the one that was nurturing him. This is a flim-flam man of the best kind, i.e., a perfect Republican!
The uber conservative Republicans and Tea Party members wouldn’t consider voting for a man who campaigns to Hispanic and Cuban-americans by telling them immigration illegalities are to be ignored and proclaiming the Dream Act is the best thing since whipped cream in a can.
Same issues with the Hispanic vote. He only gets traction with Republicans by saying things that turn off Hispanics.
I think Rubio has attained the highest office he will ever get.
To Joker: I am tired of the narrative that minorities need to have collective thoughts, ideas and positions. They are not the Borg. Rubio is Hispanic and is supported by many Hispanics. The fact that it is not a majority of Hispanics does not make his views in-authentically Hispanic.
RANT/RAVE: I had a dream two nights ago that was insanely vivid. A film….with a plot, humor, character development was acted out in the dream. I woke up at 3:30am and wrote it out. My wife was not happy as I furiously typed away what I remembered into my iphone. It was surreal – I was one of the characters but I was looking at myself – and myself was played by someone else. Any dream experts on here? What the hell is going on in my subconscious? My take is that I’ve neglected my creativity and it’s boiling up? Anyone, anyone? FYI – this was post consuming 20 chicken wings at a fantasy draft earlier in the evening:) Are chicken wings like a magical creativity elixir?
I was impressed with U.S. Republican Senator Marco Rubio. However, his ethnicity is Cuban and his race is white. Most white Cubans in Miami are Republican, white, and racist. Many black Cubans are discriminated against by the white ruling class in Miami. Marco doesn’t speak for Hispanics because many Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Central Americans, and South Americans don’t particularly share the views of Florida Cubans. Hispanics are divided by race, ethnicity, culture, country, and class.
@ joker — So are you saying that because he lied he has no chance? Wake up and smell the coffee——ALL politicials are professional liars!
Well, I don’t know what a Borg is, but I do that what gets Rubio elected in Florida, makes him radioactive to Republicans on a national scale, and vice versa…his bond with the hispanic community disappears as soon as he rolls out the required rhetoric on immigration, legality etc that is necessary to get a tea party or republican vote on a national scale, hence he will never climb higher than he currently is.
Yes, politicians lie, but his personal narrative is what got him elected to his first office. The fact that he lied about it, then lied to cover the lies makes that narrative useless now. It would have been like Obama’s narrative of growing up to a poor single welfare mother a lie when instead he was raised in Greenwich Connecticut to a brain surgeon mom and a billionare hedge fund father.
The fact that he used the RNC credit card to charge 100K worth of fraudulent expenses is just as bad. Things like buying his wife multiple plane tickets, buying groceries, $800 dollars worth of stuff off the apple store, thousands of dollars worth of meals while simultaneously having taxpayer subsidized meals, so on and so forth.
This kinda stuff is a deal killer if you are trying to pass yourself off as a fiscal conservative who hates profligate waste. Of course we have just hit the highlights here, but anyone who thinks Rubio has any chance at higher office is simply mistaken.
@ joker. Where do you get your information? “The fact that he used the RNC credit card to charge 100K worth of fraudulent expenses is just as bad. Things like buying his wife multiple plane tickets, buying groceries, $800 dollars worth of stuff off the apple store, thousands of dollars worth of meals while simultaneously having taxpayer subsidized meals, so on and so forth.”
Anonymous,
Google is your friend. Type “Rubio Credit Card” into the search box and let the wonderment happen.
I didn’t post the first comment, but my take on this is that it’s one thing to have opinions, but it’s another thing to treat those with different opinions as if they are terrible people.
Agree 100% gdopplerxt. Both sides, including their media outlets, need to tone it down. I can see nothing good coming out of this.
YES. Or somehow mentally challenged, or uneducated, or deranged, or attempting to “destroy our country” because they disagree with you.
People do have a right to their opinions. But when their opinions influence their vote, then it affects other people.
Agree. I actually think we need to be more critical about the “difference of opinion” thing. Not all opinions are value-neutral. It’s fine if someone’s personal opinion is that he or she doesn’t like gay marriagse, but it’s quite another when he/she thinks that his/her opinion should be able to take rights away from others, which is exactly what is happening. If someone believes his opinion should take away my right to marry, that is not just a difference of opinion that we should all respect. It is deeply personal, has a tangible impact on my life, attempts to cast me as a second-class citizen, and represents that he/she thinks he and his family are deserving of rights and privileges that mine is not. That is not just a difference of opinion.
I read early release and was immediately thinking orange jumpsuit.
Rave: Home renovation project going quite well, my contractor chose to replace drain lines for storm drains, which was outside of our original scope of work.
Rave: Nats vs. Cubs on Monday live, first baseball game in 20 years & first hot dog in 5 years.
Rant: Really need a beach day, yet have no respectable vacation time at work.
Rant: In my opinon, I don’t think President Obama or Mitt Romney are worth voting for. I don’t like either canidate and I am not voting in November. Both the Democratic and Republican Parties aren’t worth voting for. Politicians are liars and they will sell their souls to the Devil to get elected or re-elected. I am a Democrat, however, I am not liberal. All Democrats aren’t liberals.
Rave: I am glad it’s a 3 day weekend. I will stay around home relaxing and watching some horror movies on cable.
Vote Libertarian!
Thanks, Dr. Van Helsing/SE Ken
Jill Stein of the Green Party has impressed me with some of her ideas…maybe you want to check her platform out. We do have other options besides Romney/Obama.
I 2nd Jill Stein. The only candidate of the 5 parties putting forth a presidential candidate that really understands the fabric of the country, it’s roots, how protest and direct action are our history and nature. She is of the people and for the people. However..IMHO this democratic republic has failed…those voting and trying to hang on are just prolonging what anyone without blinders can already see.
Ok Idaho, I will bite. What do you propose we do to get the country back on course?
Rant: Feeling extra disillusioned about the current state of political discourse. Things seems to be getting worse and worse (or am I just paying more attention than I have in the past?). As someone who highly values truth and logic, I’ve realized that people in the political arena (and the people who vote for them) clearly do not value such things and instead let faith, prejudice, and the misinformed words of others guide them. Can’t figure out though if it’s lazy, malicious, or just a fundamentally different life philosophy (I suspect the latter). Really need to stop reading political news…
I couldn’t agree more. I don’t mind different viewpoints (quite the opposite) and understand that seemingly opposing conclusions can both be supported depending on how you parse the data. But so much anymore it just seems like people just say things without even trying to have any grain of truth.
I made the mistake of watching clips of the RNC last night. At one point, I turned to my boyfriend and asked if I was missing something fundamental about the particular point being made because it honestly made no logical sense, it was so riddled with inconsistencies. I feel like I’m going to need blood pressure medication just to make it through the next few months without exploding!
Rave: Old men talking to empty chairs!
Rant: 5:00 pm can’t get here fast enough!
Rant: Two words: Clint Eastwood
How classless and disrespectful during the RNC (not the time or place for that). Grand Torino much? He was just up there babbling on and on and was 7 minutes over his time limit. I guess he said screw the script. Everyone should be talking about Romney’s speech but instead everyone is talking about Eastwood.
Rant: Romney’s speech was poor to me but it was a convention speech so…if he really thinks he can get those 5 points done in 4 years, he is sadly mistaken. I love it when people just say shit just to say it. 12 million jobs, energy independence, trade agreement, balancing the budget and championing small businesses – get real buddy, nobody can do that in 4 years. You do not have a magic wand that you can wave and get that all done, nobody has it although you thought President Obama had one. I would love to hear your plans on how you propose to get this all done. Oh and by the way, being a venture capitalist is not the same as owning, starting and running businesses. Lastly, this guy is going to get us into a war faster than you can say George W. Bush.
Rave: I can’t wait until the debates for they will provide many nights of laughter.
Rave: My work day is pretty much done, Madden 13 for the rest of the day and then off to Ohio for the weekend for my wife’s family reunion and the celebration of her grandmother’s 90th birthday.
“You do not have a magic wand that you can wave and get that all done, nobody has it although you thought President Obama had one.”
Everyone who voted for Obama thought he did 4 years ago.
“Rave: I can’t wait until the debates for they will provide many nights of laughter.”
Me too! Can’t wait to see Obama and Biden flop in them!
Everyone is a pretty broad word in scope, not to sure about that one buddy. I for one knew he could not get it done in for year, hell not even 8 with all the bs that was going on, nobody could for that matter. Have you seen our political system lately.
Actually, I am in the camp that could believe that the Republicans let the Democrats when last election so they could take all the heat and deal with the BS left behind. Serioiusly, who actually picks Palin and couples her with McCain?
And you seriously think that Romney has a chance in these debates? LMAO!!
The republicans are all about hyperindividualism and that is not cool, there is more to the world than self and keeping the bottom on the bottom so you can stay on top.
“there is more to the world than self and keeping the bottom on the bottom so you can stay on top” … so says the man who owns a Jag. And I bet you said it with the the most sincere indignance.
Owning a jag doesn’t mean he wants to keep people down! It doesn’t even mean he’s at the top or near the top! For all we know he bought it used or stole it! (No I don’t think he stole it.)
It is possible to live comfortably or even be *gasp* rich and still look out for one’s fellow human beings. I fully believe Kam lives comfortably and still cares about people who are not as well off.
Wondering…….What Would P Percy Do?
Besides, everyone has luxuries they’re willing to spend their money on. It doesn’t mean every aspect of their life is as lavish.
Some people are so simple, narrow minded and ignorant. What the FUCK dies me driving a jag has to do with any of this. Do you know anything about me or my jag? How did I get it? How much? How old? Some people…
And by no means am I anywhere near rich or halfway close to it, I wish it wasn’t the case but it is.
Thank you Emmaleigh504. I really don’t live that comfortable though, I mean we are better off than many and for that I’m grateful but we have a ways to go, a long ways. First thing we will do when we can is get out of the hood, I don’t mind it so much but we want kids one day and this wont work…And you know what’s funny? I don’t recall ever saying I owned that car. People assume and make up things so they can feel better.
That was me.
You are welcome. People can be nutty sometimes, and assume all sort of stuff because of the car one drives or the bag one carries.
Agreed. The demagoguery has made the whole process feel surreal and I don’t want to be part anymore. Check out a movie called Idiocracy. Sadly, it seems more prescient everyday.
Rave: Off early today. DC Blues Festival tomorrow! It’s at Carter Barron and it’s free.
Rave: The awesome working people that built this country!

Yes! +1 to the labor movement and the dedicated men and women who fought for better working conditions and worker’s rights. Happy Labor Day!
Rant: Passing the same dead rat laying on the sidewalk on the east side of Georgia Ave between Irving and Kenyon every day this week.
Rave: Working in the Golden Triangle where there are no dead rats left to rot on the sidewalks.
Rave: Jersey Shore for the long weekend!
Please give my regards to Snookie and her newborn. LOL

What, no maggots yet? Are you sad? Call 311 and have it removed or do it yourself.

Rant: Politics. I’m no longer listening to politic podcasts, radio shows, etc. I’m not even watching the Daily Show! I’d rather spend my time in other “rants” I have going on….
Rant: Some Lance Armstrong wannabe hit my girlfriend this morning on his bike and laughed as he rode off. I’ll be messing with a few bicyclists over the weekend to even the score.
Rave: I now have a legitimate excuse to mess with bicyclists.
Two wrongs don’t make a right. Better hope that one of the cyclists isn’t a cop.
Causing problems for another innocent person actually won’t make the situation right or the world a better place.
Not cool dude. I’m as intense as they come but use some common sense. I feel you but don’t exact your revenge on innocent people. Bad form my friend. Now if you see money one day, have at it but be prepared to deal with what happens because of your actions. Likely it isn’t worth it fam.
Rant: Still sleep deprived. Still feel like crap.
Rave: Getting sprung early today. I see a nap in my future!
Rant: It’s a little sad how happy the prospect of a nap makes me.
Sad rant: Mother diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that has spread. Two weeks ago she was up and about, now she’s in the hospital and we’re looking at hospice.
Rave, I guess: She’s an awesome woman and my family is lucky to have had her around for 75 years.
Hang in there. My mom had a long battle with cancer before she passed, and we are so thankful that we got to spend the last few weeks with her in her home thanks to hospice (who in my mind do divine work). Being able to have a chance to say goodbye on her terms was one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done.
A bit of advice, if your mother is willing: have her tell you how she would like her life to celebrated (will you have a ceremony? If so, is the a song or reading she loved?). Also, if you can have a lawyer double check all her documents and assets, that will save you from potential nightmares in the next few years. It sounds callous to do it now, but it will save you from a possible hellish process if you make sure it is all handled while she is still alive.
I’m very sorry to read your news. Hospice is really wonderful – they are so helpful, and allow you to focus on being with your mother. I will be thinking of you…
Sorry for your news. Hoping that you and your family are able to provide much peace for your mom and that this peace is returned to you with time.
I’m so sorry about your mother! Know that PoPville will keep your family in our thoughts.
So sad to hear your news. Take care of your mom, and take care of you too. I agree with all of the hospice comments – they are phenomenal people. Sending peaceful thoughts and prayers.
Very sorry. And yes, you were lucky to have her. Hospice is wonderful–let them be there for you and your family. Good thoughts for your mom.
I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.
This makes me sad. My mother is about to reach this stage and it is so hard, and we have had a couple of years to get used to the idea. zrc gives good advice not to shy away from awkward business decisions and paperwork now that can make things easier for everyone later – it sounds like your mom would want that. I hope you are able to spend time with her now, and that you have a lot of happy memories to sustain you now and during the difficult times ahead.
I’m so sorry. Prayers and light to you and your family.
Question: I moved from DC 2 months ago (I really miss it!!), does anyone know if the demolition has started on the Safeway, etc. on Wisconsin Ave in the Cleveland Park/Catherdral Heights/McClean Gardens area yet?
dangit! I meant the former Giant, not Safeway.
Nope – still waiting for the gian wrecking ball.
Rant: Finally got up the courage to go see a therapist to start dealing with some of the shit in my life. I am a very guarded person, so this wasn’t easy. The admin person forgot to put it on the therapist’s schedule, so I have to go back another time.
Keep at it! I know it’s hard to take the first step, but it can be so rewarding.
Revel: got to check out my good friend Sy Smith last night perform with Sheila E. at The Howard Theatre, and the show was incredibly inspiring. As a professional musician, it’s nice to take a night off and witness someone who is an expert at the craft, and Sheila and her entire band were amazing.
Revel 2: hung out and partied afterwards with Sheila and the band, and she is so cool and down to earth. My boyhood crush on her is completely cemented now.
Rant: feeling a bit ragged today as a result….but got nothing heavy on the agenda today other than recording and practicing, so life is pretty damn sweet!
I toyed with the idea of going to the Sheila E show, but I got lazy. I’m glad to hear it was a good show and that you had a good time!
Rave: Three day weekend!
Rant: My supervisor and her superior are out of the office today.
Rave/Rant: They left me in charge.
Rant: Big deadline coming up and one of them passed off a bunch of stuff to me via email last night.
Rave: Red Hot Patriot tonight!
Rant: Being the only one in the office while everyone starts their long weekend.
Rave: Being the only one in the office made it easier to hit the snooze button once more and perhaps justify an extended lunch today….
Rant: Forgot my watch, so I’ve felt naked all day (Rave?)
Revel: POMEGRANATES ARE BACK
Really? Where? I’m noticing more pears and apples making their way into the Farmers Markets.
Rave: Heading to the island for some boating and bbq fun.
Rant: You’d think with a Tropical Storm moving across the country we’d have some winds, but apparently not around here? So much for some high energy sailing!
RANT: Early dismissal makes me cranky.
Rave: Holidays make my happy.
Rave: The end of a productive personal and professional week – figuring out how to navigate my health insurance, got good news at work, and met a bunch of deadlines, plus have grand plans for the weekend ahead.
Rant: Like many others, I’m already ready for the election season to be over for so many reasons.
Revel: Beach tomorrow!
Revel: My husband made me a delicious breakfast sandwich this morning. YUM!
Rant: So much work to do and no one responds to emails or calls on Friday.
Revel: Whatever, long weekend!
Not a rant or revel, but does anyone have any recommendations for a good beach read (or two)? I can get through a lot of books in four days. Haha.
Gone Girl, if you’re willing to purchase a copy. I think there’s still a long wait list at the library.
Oh I’ve heard great things about Gone Girl!
I recently read “Girls in White Dresses” and loved it. Definitely not your typical chick lit, but that is what made it so good. Rather than a predictable girl-meets-boy plot, it was series of short stories following a group of friends in their 20s navigating the uncertainties of post-college life. It was witty and hilarious and I didn’t want it to end.
Thank you, anonymous and Talula! I was considering purchasing Gone Girl and I will check out Girls in White Dresses. I appreciate the recs!
rant: I just saw the news that Fatback will stop holding their monthly dance nights in Jan ’13. I feel bad now for not going more often b/c they’re alot of fun.
rave: fellow students in my new grad program are really nice, so much better so far than my previous grad school experience!
rant: In order to meet a deadline later this month, I need to work 2 out of 3 days this weekend – fortunately though I can do it from home, with a cat on my lap
RANT/RAVE: I had a dream two nights ago that was insanely vivid. A film….with a plot, humor, character development was acted out in the dream. I woke up at 3:30am and wrote it out. Rave: Today is my last day of my internship and hopefully the last time I will ever have the title of “intern” in my life.
Rave: Officially a full-time employee as of tomorrow. Very excited for the pay boost.
Rant: After waiting a year and a half from the start of a new job to finally take a real week long vacation to sit on the beach…my vacation is cancelled…I was supposed to leave today. Last week the wife came home with one arm looking bigger than the other and turns out it was blood clot under her collarbone that was aggravated by all the working out we have been doing…wtf. The increased muscle mass pinched off the vein. So a couple of days in the hospital this week to get it fixed and now blood thinners for a few weeks before we have to go to Johns Hopkins for surgery to fix it once and for all. Don’t get me wrong, health is the most important thing and I’m so glad we caught this before it caused any real problems…but damn, I was so looking forward to a mental break and now it’s going to be 2.5 years from when I started this job until I finally get to sit on a beach with my girl, a paperback and some cold beers.
sounds awful! After the surgery I recommend booking a couple of nice Fri/Saturday overnighters away (beach, mountains?) to cushion the blow. Maybe you guys can swing a four night trip to the islands or something while you build up your vacation time.
Thanks for the ideas. I appreciate it.
Puerto Rico, Aruba, Playa Del Carmen, Bahamas have easy direct flights from DC–you could get a good long weekend when you have time. I hope your wife’s recovery is easy and quick. Good luck.
Rave: glad youtube exist so I can get my fix of old school Baltimore Club music.
Rant: at work so I really can’t turn it up too loud…
New to biking here. Whats the protocol for traveling through Logan Circle?
Rant: Creepy guy at the grocery store who I mistakenly thought no longer worked there.
Rant: Working breakfast on labor day, so I don’t get to go out and have fun tonight.
Rave: Working Labor Day means I get time and half, so at least I get extra money!
