You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or rejoice about daily life in DC.

Not the most interesting design but it will be great to have it rather than a festering...
Maybe I'm just impatient, but I'm amazed at how people just love to wait in line for...
more proof that Brookland is a long ways off from being the newest "hot" neighborhood.
I am also terrified that my lock might expire.
Also refinancing, also appraised better...
Does anyone know what is going on with the house at 5303 5th St., NW? Remodeling began,...
Rant: Ready to send out an invite to my “Come celebrate ME (and bring gifts, bitches)” party. It’s frustrating to have so many weddings, showers, engagement parties, baby showers, baptisms, bachelorette weekends, etc., to attend/buy gifts for. Just gets old to keep spending tons to celebrate other people’s happiness, knowing they don’t have to return the favor.
Rave: Greece two weeks from today!! I’ll be in Samos most of the trip and would LOVE suggestions if anyone has them. Thinking about taking the ferry to Kuşadası and going to Ephesus as a day trip.
Rave: Friend with a free house to stay in on Samos, and my United frequent flier miles. Otherwise, this trip would not be happening.
Ephesus is awesome. If you go, and you’re not vegetarian, try the local specialty – cop sis. sorta pronounced chirp shish. tiny delectable tidbits of lamb roasted on a stick, served with sliced onion and sumac. freaking out of this world delicious.
I’ll be in Greece in 3 weeks! And Ephesus is really awesome. Bring a hat. I almost fried to death when I went.
I’ll add my voice to the chorus of “Ephesus is awesome”. Been there twice, as part of a cruise itinerary, and would love to go back again.
Sounds like that free house in Samos should take some of the sting out of giving gifts to others.
It’s definitely awesome. If there was not a free place to stay (friend of a friend’s home), it absolutely would not be possible for me to go.
You should get them all trinkets from your trip as their gifts to rub in their faces that instead of spending money on babies and weddings, you have the freedom to go to Greece and live the beautiful life.
[Yes, I know, "Bitchy much?"]
You do note the inherent contradiction in your Rant, correct?
I do. I think you have to be a single thirty-something female to get it.
I really am happy for my friends, but I’ve been a bridesmaid 7 times, hosted baby showers showers and bachelorette weekends, etc, etc. It just gets REALLY expensive. And some of the friends I spent $1000+ on disappeared after the wedding–as in one never bothered to even send a thank you note, and this was YEARS ago.
I am feeling your rant so hard.
I found Ephesus underwhelming. The library was amazing, but the rest was like most other ruins I saw in Greece/Turkey. If you can, firgure out the day with the fewest cruise ships in port and go early or late in the day when most of the cruisers either haven’t arrived or have left. Otherwise Ephesus is swarming with people. Samos was beautiful! I did get some great silver jewlry at the market in Kusadasi.
Rant: waiting for a job offer. my fingernails are not happy.
My fingernails feel your fingernails pain! I’m waiting for one too!
That makes three of us! Good luck
Rant (reposting from forum): After playing a show at St. Stephens church last Sunday, my bandmate’s car was broken into and approximately 3 grand of photo equipment was stolen, as well as some guitar pedals and a vintage bass. A long shot I know but if anyone sees for sale an old BC Rich Warlock bass with a tremolo system, a Nikon D90, 35mm f.18 and 18-300mm Nikon lenses, a 10-20 Sigma lens, 2 Boss TU-2 tuners, a modded Boss DS-1 pedal, a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor pedal, or an old model Rat Pedal, please let me know. The loss of these things has been pretty crushing and a warning to be careful where you park (we were right in front of the church)!
That is such a huge bummer. Sorry that happened to you. I hope you find your stuff. Any chance of insurance coverage?
After years of misery at my current job, I finally got a new one! Can’t wait!
Apologies to my fellow PoP readers for my constant bitching about work on R&R.
Rave: Today is my Thursday and my Friday consists of going up to NY for a tasting for my November event.
Rave: Cousin will babysit our daughter next weekend so husband and I can enjoy an awesome, long brunch with friends at a place where we wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing her. Understandably, she doesn’t want to sit for an hour plus and this way we don’t have to wrangle.
Rave, my wife and are a married 20 years today. I usually don’t post this stuff, but after seeing some friends divorce, I’m really happy about this.
Rant: I’ll save it for another time. . . .
Congratulations!
Congratulations!! Here’s to many many more!!
I was just shopping for wedding gifts for a friend and I found this awesome site – wine for a wedding – that you can customize and gift three bottles of wine in special wine boxes for each big anniversary – First, 5th, 10th, 20th, etc. How cool!
I’m glad you posted this! It makes me happy. Congrats!
Congratulations!!! and thanks for giving us all hope. or at least to me!
At the risk of seemingly trying to one up dcRat (I’m not! Congrats!), my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at the beginning of July. Keep the hope alive
+20!!! congratulations!
rant: forgot to wash the conditioner out of my hair this morning. Maybe I need to drink my coffee BEFORE i shower.
Rave: I did remember the deodorant.
rave, I guess: first non-poofy hair day of the summer.
Reason #13 why I LOVE being bald.
Here here!
Rave: Week of vacation starts Friday at 3pm!
Rant: I feel a cold coming on.
You might want to try Coldcalm — a homeopathic remedy — for your rant. You can get it at CVS or Whole Foods. I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago — and it worked really well.
A scientific study done years ago on treating colds showed that a cold treated very aggressively tended to resolve in 7-10 days. A cold which was “ignored” (no treatment) tended to resolve in… 7-10 days.
I’d like to see the peer-reviewed scientific studies which demonstrate how *any* nostrum sold at CVS (or other drugstores) does anything more than address the symptoms of a cold.
Here we go – a nice blog post which addresses “homeopathic” medicine and ColdCalm in one fell swoop:
http://www.medpedia.com/news_analysis/6-Genomics-Evolution-and-Pseudoscience/entries/79252-Strychnine-for-your-childs-cold—courtesy-of-your-friendly-homeopath
EEEEWWW! The GOOD news is that when I tried coldcalm — and I’ve done this twice –despite having a bit of a scratchy throat, I ended up not getting any additional cold symptoms at all. The BAD news is that I’m now gonna semi-obsessively google symptoms of strychnine poisoning.
Well, the good news is that if you take enough strychnine, you won’t have to worry about your cold symptoms or the cold anymore. You’ll just be a cold cadaver…
(Wow – I’m just a ray of happy sunshine today!)
dactyl, I kicked a nasty cold a few weeks ago with the help of turmeric. Mixed some in with soy milk, honey, cinnamon, and ginger to create a sort of chai latte. It felt really soothing and warming, and the next A.M. the congestion and throat scratchiness were all gone
Rave: Purchased a case of Pumking, the mightiest of the pumpkin ales.
Mini-Rant: Not chilly enough to be drinking pumpkin beers quite yet (my self-imposed rule).
Where?!
Pre-ordered it on beership.com. Got tired last year of having to stop by two or three stores on the walk home to see if they had it in yet and only being able to get one or two bottles at a time.
One of the sweetest little joys in life is enjoying a hearty pumpkin ale on cool fall day. Preferrably, when discussing football near a grill in my backyard.
I can’t wait for fall…you just described a perfect sunday!
My perfect day as well, if you replace the football discussion with a knitting project!
Knitting next to a grill would be dangerous!
Rave: Your rave just made me so excited for fall and all things pumpkin flavored/made with pumpkin!
yes! Pumpkin ale is the true harbinger of fall. I just picked up some Sam Adams Oktoberfest the other day, pleasantly surprised that it’s out so early!
Thank you, THANK YOU for saying “pumpkin beer” – I had a chance to hightail it over to Schneider’s and found that they had my one true love, Schlafly Pumpkin Ale, newly in stock. Bless your beer-loving face, sir.
Rant: Qualia Coffee; They should re-evaluate their business plan… Their largest cup of coffee is way too small. I had to stop by Dunkin Donuts and get another cup of coffee to cure my coffee fix this morning.. I’d pay more for a larger cup, the coffee is not that precious that it should be 2$ for a cup that would normally be a tall size at Starbucks. Also I wasn’t enthused about the guy counting money and using the register and then using bare hands on my bagel this morning. Not sure I’ll ever go back. We need more coffee shops on GA Ave damnit.
Rave: Beginning to look like a late summer beach trip might be able to be worked out. Crossing my fingers, putting my dog up at the vet is soooo expensive though, we need more boarding options in NW DC, and more fitness gyms.
Two questions for y’all:
1. Anyone know of a neighborhood football league? My bf just moved here (RAVE!) and is looking for one near Logan to join.
2. Anyone know an inexpensive place to fix small electrical goods? My little cuisinart processor just broke (rant).
Thanks
Rant: Homicide Watch DC might be finished
Rave: But – they started a kickstarter campaign to keep it going: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1368665357/a-one-year-student-reporting-lab-within-homicide-w
Give!
Thanks for this post!
Rant: headache.
Rave: just a headache, not a migraine, so I really shouldn’t complain.
Rave: Work is quiet because everyone is on vacation.
Rave: So glad to be back on my bike cruising around the city. It’s so odd to be dependent on cars (and motocycle taxis) while on a work trip and then to be so independent at home.
Rave: A random but great weekday evening out in the neighborhood with my husband. Live music, drinks, and dessert
Rant: A very stressed and sad Mom… it’s so hard to figure out how to help her. I listen, I offer help, but every time we talk she’s so upset about everything…
Rave: Mom will be visiting for a couple days this weekend at my insistence – hopefully she can relax and we can talk. Too bad I have to work during the day.
That a baby girl! I hope your Mom can see that she has you and your love.
Big Fat Rave: Just came back from visiting friends in New Hampshire. Cool weather, no need for a/c, no awful bugs trying to eat you alive, sweet lakes, picking veggies out of the garden in the morning, not having to lock up your car or your house, the stunning mountains and the biggest surprise, coming back home to temperatures in the 80′s. Can’t complain.
Seriously – DC mosquitos are out of control. Did we use to spray for these things? Or is it the infiltration of the asian mosquitos that feed all day long that is the culprit.
I can’t remember where I read this but the mild winter we had may be the cause of the out of control mosquitoes this summer. Not as many died off as per usual.
Mosquitos aren’t as bad, but at sundown every night the black flies/no-see-ems come out in full effect and eat you alive. The bugs are equally terrorizing!
Rant: Bummed that Homicide Watch DC is not going to have it’s awesome leader doing her good work every day anymore….I find it hard to believe she wanted to do it in the first place, but it turned out to be innovative journalism indeed.
Rant: My cat has urinary cystitis. The vet gave me a couple drugs to help her, but the inflammation ultimately has to run its course with nothing to speed it along. Could take 7-10 days of painful urination for the poor thing.
Rave: Having the money to afford the vet. Very thankful for that!
Sorry. When my cat had cystitis years ago, the worst of her symptoms (excessive straining at the litter box) usually went away after the first day, which I construed as meaning her worst pain was abating. I hope the same goes for your little one.
And I totally understand the money for the vet rave!
Rant: People.
Rave: That one person.
Rant: The class I’m taking today is all day today and tomorrow. I thought it was just two morning sessions.
Rave: Since I’m working extra hours because of the class, I can leave pretty early on Friday.
Hey, PEPCO: I want $1 credited to my next bill for that self-congratulatory non-apology letter I got yesterday. 35 cents for the postage (I assume you get a bulk mailing rate), 5 cents for the paper and ink, and the balance just for being exposed to the appalling tone-deafness and the unmitigated gall it took to send that letter after the suckass season you’ve put us all through. Just take it out of your historic profits. You won’t even notice.
Rant: This week. I have absolutely NO motivation.
Rant: GIANT flying cockroach in my bedroom! Ewwwwww! I made my big, burly roommate come remove it for me. It died of its own accord (well, almost, legs were still twitching), thankfully. Let’s hope there’s ONLY ONE!
Rave: At least it’s Wednesday…….
Rave: Awesome new roommates.
Rave: This new Miguel song Adorn makes me feel like doing sexy dances on my man.
Rant: I no longer have a man to do sexy dances with and on.
Query: What ever happened to that PoP dating thing? lol That was a flash in the pan.
rave: math camp!
rant: math camp is making me feel dumb
