You can talk about whatever is on your mind โ€“ quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct peopleโ€™s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or rejoice about daily life in DC.

  • rant: crazy rain on the way to work

  • alxindc

Rant: Feels like the first day of fall.

Rave: It will be less sweaty/swampy!!!

Rave: Nice communal breakfast with the co-workers.

  • Rave: Friday, finally an end to this week from Hell!

Double rave: I have absolutely the best friends a girl could ever ask for!

Rant: Another one bites the dust. I’m sure that somewhere out there is a guy for me, but damn, he is hiding behind a lot of frogs.

  • Rave: It’s finally Friday. This week has felt really long for some reason.

Rant: Most of my friends are out of town this weekend. I guess it’s just a typical August weekend in DC.

  • gertie_wickler

Rave: Getting new carpet installed in our family room today!

Rave: My sister will be here in less than one week and we’ll get to play tennis for three days straight.

Rant: Sad to hear of David Rakoff’s passing.

  • Rant: I usually enjoy not having a car, but today…I miss my car.

  • RANT: Woman walking her dog this morning. She was on left side of sidewalk….dog was on right side. The leash stretched from one side to the other and was totally blocking the sidewalk. Then she had the nerve to give me an attitude when I asked her if she could move over so I could walk by. Some dog owners (not all) are so rude and inconsiderate.

    • Or, how about those bikers that choose to ride on the sidewalk instead of the street and zip by at a high rate of speed, or creep silently behind you. I absolutely hate that. There is no recourse for a biker that hits a pedestrian on the sidewalk. Not only do I have to look out for cars, but look out for bikers on the sidewalk. Gaaahhh!

  • Rant: I just read the DC Urban Moms message board for the first time. Currently contemplating giving myself a hysterectomy with a rusty spoon.

    • That is the nastiest group of people I’ve encountered in a long time. I read DCUM sometimes just to laugh at them.

    • That chicken coop discussion is cracking me up!

    • It seems anytime a group of moms gets together, it is a nightmare. Million Mothers, MADD, etc. And no, I am not pro-drunk driving, but MADD is ridiculous.

      • MADD achieved what they wanted (tought drunk driving laws) decades ago. Now, to stay in business, they need new campaigns, and they’re tyrying to pass even tougher laws (like making it illegal to have ONE drink before driving.) I wouldn’t be surprised if thet tried to bring back prohibition.

        • It already is illegal to have one drink before driving, if you’re a small woman. Learned that the hard way!

  • Rave: An opportunity to move into a coworker’s lovely apartment and it’s inexpensive!

Rant: It’s in Friendship Heights. Any opinions on that? I love the Dupont/Logan/U Street area I currently live in, but some quiet might be nice.

    • Friendship Heights is mostly nice because you have a couple of grocery stores and the metro really close. But is also where everyone goes to go shopping. I personally don’t want to feel like I live in a shopping mall. There are some condo buildings tucked away behind the stores, but in my experience there are a lot of older residents there. Also, your restaurant selection is Cosi, Rosa Mexicano, and Cheesecake Factory. Meh. But if quiet is what you want, F Heights is certainly quiet.

    • I’d be less worried about the neighborhood and more worried about living with a co-worker (or are you just renting from a co-worker?) That seems like it could go horribly wrong.

Having said that FriHi is obviously a different vibe than DuLoUstreet but there’s some nice stuff up there and you’ve got all your shops bars and whatnot nearby. If you miss the old ‘hood it’s only a couple stops away on the metro.

      • I completely agree about living with a coworker– this would be renting an apartment in a colleague’s home. Separate entrance, and definitely a non-crazy. But, I don’t know if it will still be odd to rent from them?

      • Ditto. Also, depending on where you work it could be a horrible commute. I live about a mile from my office, but my doctor is out in Friendship Heights and that is a loooooong metro ride.

    • I give most of my guitar lessons in the FH/Bethesda area, and the neighborhood has grown on me. Rodman’s might be the most amazing place for booze in DC, Booeymonger’s is always tasty, and you have easy metro/whole foods access. Plus, Bethesda and Chevy Chase (the strip just below the circle on Connecticut) are within a short walk and have plenty of hip movie/dining/drinking options.

Also, I’ve noticed that area has an above-median stable of good-looking people, if you are single, or just enjoy good people-watching.

      • Thanks for the insight! I’ve heard about Rodmans as a favorite of the expat community for international foods too.

        • Rodmans has got the goods. That store might be the most underrated gem in the entire District. Fantastic selection of beer, international foods, regular produce, and cosmetics.

    • I have a 2 bedroom apt on 14th and Taylor St NW open at the end of the month.

      • Thanks for chiming in– unfortunately, 2 bdrm is probably too big/out of our price range– please post again on PoP if you have a studio or one-bedroom in the future ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Bear

How much for that 2BR? I know someone who is looking–see if PoP will give you my email address.

        • 2 bdr, 1 bath legal unit separately metered w/ C/O for $1900, Remodeled just 2 yrs ago. Available Sept 10th.
          email taylorstapt at gmail

    • I recently moved from Friendship Heights. The neighborhood between Wisconsin and Connecticut Ave’s is quiet, upscale, and pretty safe. Wisc Ave near the Friendship Heights metro has a lot of stores (TJ Maxx, Loehmans, World Market, JCrew, Ann Taylor) and there are nicer ones to be found up the block. Not a lot in the way of bars–Chadwicks is a nice neighborhood standby, but not much else. The 31/32/36 buses run every 5-10 minutes downtown.

Overall, a nice place to live. Not the most interesting or happening in the city, certainly, but if you’re looking for a quieter neighborhood….it’ll probably suit you well.

  • Nervous rant/rave: I’ve had 2 interviews with an organization, followed by a full background check and reference check. They asked me to come in yet again, and I’m nervous because I have no idea what’s going to happen. I’ve already interviewed with all of these people! I don’t get nervous for most interviews because they are fairly predictable and I’m confident in my skills. But this…I just don’t know what is going to happen.

    • This is good. Expect that the firm is choosing between yourself and one other candidate. At this point they know you are qualified to do work. This is opportunity to impress on them you are good to work w/ and that you can add value. Think outside of box of normal interview and be confident.

    • Try to go in relaxed. Obviously there was something(s) about you that they liked and the fact that they have done the background check, etc is a good thing. One thing is for sure, they are not calling you in to tell you that you did not get the job. RELAX!!!

    • You will be just fine!! Just be yourself and relax!

  • RAVE: I am sporting some major Natitude lately!

  • Rave: First gig with the band in about a month, and it’s the first time we’re playing this venue (bar/restaurant in southern MD, on the water.) Should be a good one. Our former guitarist (who was fired a couple of years ago) is rejoining us on a trial basis tonight. Not sure how this is going to turn out. Hope this doesn’t turn into a rant. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hah! Have fun….sometimes a new audience/venue is a good change. And I hope the return of the old guitarist reminds you of the fun of playing with people with whom you have good music chemistry. Kill ’em tonight! What kind of stuff do you play?

  • Rave : Italian wine tasting tonight at Lion’s! I just visited that place for the first time recently – it is like a cathedral of booze. I’m going to get a bottle of something I can’t pronounce and hang out with friends tonight!

Rant: I have to get through a lot of final editing today first.

  • Rant: Got a call from Bank of America that my debit card number was stolen through a merchant and they were cancelling my card just in time for the weekend! Hooray!

Rave: Actually woke up early this morning to do my 3 mile run. I’m impressed with myself.

    • They can issue you a temporary debit card. You can get these at any branch. This may be a little inconvenient, but its much earier than having to file reports AFTER money has been stolen from your account.

    • They can issue a temprorary debit card to you until the permanent one arrives in the mail. Any branch can issue the temporary card.

Rave: My parents are coming to visit in a couple of weeks! I’m so excited I really can’t think of anything else.

Rant: I HATE living so far away from my parents.

Rave: I LOVE living so close to my sister and her family.

  • Rant: I worry about living in a capital that is thriving so much more than the rest of the country. I’m not sure what to do about it — we can’t even vote for the people in Congress who created this situation! — but I worry about it.

    • That’s fascinating. I am surprised at how high the positive number is because there are plenty of people in DC who are not doing well. There are lots of “have nots.” I wonder who is answering these surveys.

  • Rave: It’s my birthday. 39!

Rave: And I’m working at home today.

Rave: AND my husband got me just what I wanted.

Rave: AND my parents will be here for a visit in one more week. I can’t wait!

    Rant: Nothing at the moment.

  • talula

Rave: Mini 4-day vacation starts tonight!! Looking forward to spending time with old friends.

Rant: Weather ruining my vacation. I’m almost certain that my flight out of DCA will be delayed this evening. Fingers crossed it doesn’t get cancelled. ๐Ÿ™

  • I haven’t pooped in four days. In some serious pain.

    • Drink a large glass of prune juice. Just make sure you dont venture far from home after doing so…..if you know what I mean.

  • pablo .raw

rave: Not wearing a sweater today! I blocked the dam grill !
rave: Listening to Salvatore Licitra on a loop, it’s almost a year after his passing.
rave: considering some real estate investment
rant: fixing somebody else’s document, it was created as in a typewriter machine.

  • Rave: Wait, there is a DC Beer Week? Sweet!!!!

  • Rave: Destiny Hooker, what power and timing. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that volleyball.

Rant: Who in their right mind, if from the Hooker family, names their daughter Destiny? Fortunately, her true destiny was volleyball star.

  • Rant: I just can’t believe how hard it is to give away hundreds of thousands of dollars! Is it the paperwork or the lost opportunity holding them back?

  • Rant: I am so sick of our lame MPD – mulitple folks report eyewitness and have photos of a alleged thief, and they do just about nothing. Do we need to police our own neighborhoods? Has anyone sent this thread to the 3d and 4d Commanders? Seriously lame! They need to catch this guy and check his bag for a crowbar! And get his damed fingerprints, criminy. http://forum.princeofpetworth.com/question/jxB10MtplwU=/heads-up–attempted-break-in-on-park-place

    • As residents who were clearly violated, I wonder if the approach should have been to demand that the police seek to identify the man, and issue him a warning to not trespass at that location again. DC’s trespassing laws are so weak, but I understand that if warned not to, there is some recourse if it happens again?

      • When I asked MPD to break up the nightly dice game that took place on the porch of a neighboring house after the renters left, I was told that they needed to get some kind of trespass order from the owner indicating that the people there were not on the property legally. The good news is that MPD and my council member did contact the owner and worked with him or her to get the issue resolved.
I don’t think you can blame MPD for not doing anything with that photo. It shows a guy approaching a front door.

        • I see what you mean, but the DC code seems to state “any person who shall enter against the will or without lawful authority” is considered trespass. As the owner, do we have the right to ask authorities to issue some sort of trespass order? Or does one have to have a no trespassing sign on the front stairs first? How does a lawful occupant make such a demand of the trespasser? You’d think MPD would say something more like “right, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for this guy since he’s likely a serial burglar as you suggest.” Oh right, it’s loss, not theft….

District of Columbia Official Code 2001 Edition Currentness
Division IV. Criminal Law and Procedure and Prisoners.
Title 22. Criminal Offenses and Penalties.
          Subtitle I. Criminal Offenses.
Chapter 33. Trespass; Injuries to Property.
ยง 22-3302. Unlawful entry on property.

(a)(1) Any person who, without lawful authority, shall enter, or attempt to enter, any private dwelling, building, or other property, or part of such dwelling, building, or other property, against the will of the lawful occupant or of the person lawfully in charge thereof, or being therein or thereon, without lawful authority to remain therein or thereon shall refuse to quit the same on the demand of the lawful occupant, or of the person lawfully in charge thereof, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of not more than $1,000, imprisonment for not more than 180 days, or both. The presence of a person in any private dwelling, building, or other property that is otherwise vacant and boarded-up or otherwise secured in a manner that conveys that it is vacant and not to be entered, or displays a no trespassing sign, shall be prima facie evidence that any person found in such property has entered against the will of the person in legal possession of the property.

          • I am not sure a trespass order would work against someone who is not currently trespassing, or expected to trespass in the future. In my case, they needed some evidence that the folks on the porch were there against the will of the owner. They couldn’t just roust the folks from the porch for hanging around. Loitering is not illegal in DC. Contacting the owner and getting a statement from them established that anyone found on the property was there without the owner’s consent and was therefore trespassing.
I believe that unless your property is posted “No Trespassing”, there is a presumption that people have your consent to enter it. You can withdraw that consent by telling the person to leave.

  • Revel: Georgia Ave streetscape is pretty much finished and overall looks great. It’s quite an improvement.

Rant: I think it was a poor choice to use those red jigsaw-puzzle type pavers in spots along the curbs. They don’t quite make a tight seal, and weeds and grasses are growing furiously through them. The stretch from Taylor to Varnum, east side, is particularly bad. It makes the area look blighted and abandoned rather than the brand new that it is.

Revel: The stretch between Shepherd and Taylor in front of the church is very well maintained and looks great.

  • Rave: Finally finished most of my work projects! Yippee, been plugging away and overwhelmed since March. So relieved and my grumpiness has magically dissipated. I honestly forgot what it felt like to be caught up on things and not pissy. It feels amazing.

  • Rant: I feel like DC and I might be on the verge of a very messy break-up.

Fell is love more than eight years ago and now every pile of dog poop in our flower bed, idiot driver, corrupt politician, and pedestrian with figurative blinders on is another test of my resolve to not sever ties.

And my typical strategies to rekindle the old fuzzy feelings – taking a break from town for a couples days, visiting a favorite place – have only made things worse. Not a clue what to do besides consider developing an exit strategy… maybe that process would end the funk?

  • Rave: USA Women’s soccer team beating Japan for the gold! Redemption from the World Cup loss last year!

Double rave: Carli Lloyd’s two goals to win the game for the US, and after losing her starting spot on the team just prior to the Olympics!

    Triple rave: It’s Friday!!!!

  • Rant: Is Shawarma Spot in Adams Morgan closed? A buddy of mine says says the chairs are all stacked up and they haven’t been open for a while. Can anyone confirm.

Rave: Friday. Happy Hour in a little over 4 hours.

  • Rave: Taking an extended break from PoP commenting. I came here this week to rant about something that actually truly bothered me. Usually, my rants and raves flow in with others’ on here: “Rave: Friday! Great vacation! New job! Rant: Someone did something on the metro/road/sidewalk that bothered me! I don’t like my job! I’m angry about litter and gentrification!” After this week’s RRRoR fire-backs on a true life rant, and getting worked up from strangers’ comments, I need a damn break from you guys. See you around.

    • You also had several people supporting you and offering encouragement.

      • You’re right, I did, and I did thank those people yesterday because I was happy to read some positive and constructive comments. But I need a long break from the negative trollers on here–just sick of it! I’ll be back in the fall, I’m sure. Take care, and thank you for your levelheaded comments yesterday, C3PO–may the force be with you ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Another Friday, another 3pm meeting to prep for! At this point I think I may be as ready as I can be and will just have to get through it so as to get to the end of this week. At worst is should just be… longer than I want, but not terrible. (Knock wood.)

  • Rave: Metro operators who treat their microphone like it lives in a smooth jazz (make that smooooooth jazz) radio booth.

Hey, has anyone heard from the Comic Operator lately? You know, the guy who said stuff like “This is Metro Center. Your weekend starts on the right.” and “The time is 9:02. But hey, let’s call it 8:55 so you won’t be late.” And “Next stop, Judiciary Square. If you are serving on a jury today, thank you for your service. If you are on trial, best of luck.” I always loved a ride with him, but it’s been at least a year.

    • There used to be a guy who would do this every P.M. during rush hour on the Blue Line. Always made me smile.

    • In the 90’s (not sure if he is still driving) there was a Red Line operator who used to announce:

“This the Red Line to …. Shady Grrrrooovvveee”

like it was the tag line for a horror movie. Loved that.

  • MEGA OFFICE RANT: I’m a product strategy manager for a big company….what does that mean (really I have no IDEA)!? But a part of it is coming up with our annual strategic plan/doing a SWOT analysis of the market…..figuring out what we need to improve and how we should go to market with our practice’s suite of services in FY13 and beyond. So to my rant…we have been having two hour working sessions a day the past week to brainstorm and formulate our plan. Do you ever sit in a meeting and feel like everyone is speaking Chinese and you have no fucking idea what anyone is talking about!! That’s how I’ve felt pretty much all week. But because of my seniority I feel like I should know what the hell is going on…..but I’m not sure if anyone else knows what the hell they’re saying. It’s been a bumbling, awkward set of “not so good” ideas and contributions……What the F? And my counterpart is a HBS guy and is stuck in the fucking weeds on everything…..I’m like OK we can look at that but who gives a flying F…what is our plan? What are the action steps associated with all of this deconstructionist jibber jabber……Diatribes about this and that….OK NOW what are we going to do? Maybe I have really bad ADD and shouldn’t be planning but doing…I don’t know:)
