Dear PoPville,
Today, I noticed the creatures adorning the top of the Twins Jazz building for the first time. It appears they have been there for ages, but the tree hides them pretty well so I have passed by for years without seeing them. I couldn’t tell if these are dogs, tigers or what. (The paint is significantly chipped off.) I assume they were part of the building for years and perhaps had significance for a previous business in that location?
Anyone know the history behind these?

1344 U Street, NW

I believe they were put up in the 90s when the place was called The Andalusian Dog.
“Don’t cross the streams”
LOL
I always thought they were dinosaurs. You can see them from roofs across the street.
Guard dogs for Gozer the Gozerian?
Was this building designed by the famous Ivo Shandor? Cold-riveted beams with cores of pure selenium, magnesium-tungsten alloys, and gold plated bolts, anybody?
Ghostbusters… nice!
The crazy ol’ Andalusian Dog! Haven’t thought about that place in years. I believe anonymous is correct, though — there were many interesting decorations there.
Those are bears that were put in place in the mid-90′s by the exterior designer of the Andalusian Dog. Photo and story: http://www.globalhometown.com/hometown.php?aid=69
So cool when it was Andalusian Dog. The decor inside and out was awesome, and they had a gay night every Thurs with 70s funk music and you could dance on the benches. Nothing that cool on U street now, that’s for sure. I can’t believe they took the Dali clocks down when it turned into yet another Ethiopian place. Sad.
