Dear PoPville - Why Aren't Investors Showing Kennedy Street Any Love?

Scuttlebutt: Tico Restaurant Coming to Louis Project at 14th and U St, NW?

Earlier in the month we learned that Trader Joe’s was really coming to the Louis project at 14th and U St, NW. Well, I just got more good news for the development. I hear that a restaurant from Boston called Tico is also planning on opening in the Louis retail space. From their Website:

A place that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Tico has a fun, sexy atmosphere, delicious and unpretentious food, amazing cocktails, cold beer, lots of tequila, cool music and great people watching.

Tico is all about your good time.

Conceived by Chef/Owner Michael Schlow, Tico is a new and exciting style of restaurant; American at its core, the menu is influenced by Schlow’s travels and love for Spain, Mexico and South America.

You can see their menus here.

Any Bostonian expats familiar with Tico?

I checked out the website and it looks like a tapas restaurant. Aren’t there two other tapas bars scheduled to open on 14th? Among the myriads of others that already exist in this city . . .

  • I predict this place will have a boring, prudish atmosphere, gag-inducing and pretentious food, mediocre cocktails, warm beer, no tequila, German martial music and ugly people watching, yet be a rousing success.

I’m not familiar with Tico, but I am familiar with Michael Schlow. He is the real deal. His main restaurants in Boston, Via Matta and Radius, are very, very good.

i agree. i’m a boston expat. i moved to dc before tico opened but Radius is a very good high-end restaurant in boston that some say serve the best burger in boston at the bar. He’s a definite player in the boston restaurant scene.

    More tapas?? Nooooo

  • josh

    “sexy?” no thank you.

  • I’ll add my voice to to chorus of no more tapas.

I’d really like to see some more down home, non-chain restaurants with diverse world cuisines: Scandinavian, Brazilian, Colombian, Egyptian, Pakistani. The more whole in the wall, the better, as long as the food is good and affordable.

Bring it on, baby! I say that because I find it nearly impossible to get a seat in a restaurant on 14th on a Saturday night, and the condos being built are bringing in lots more people to compete with me. IMHO, 14th can handle many more restaurants, including tapas, which wouldn’t be my first choice, to keep up with the demand.

What this town really needs is a strip club that serves small plates – topless tapas!

  • with all the new faces moving into that area… i wonder if the urban planners-that-be are going to try and create more of a neighborhood feel instead of a destination (St. Ex and Bar Pilar are very nice and have propagated the neighborhood feel… to their credit). Tapas just says “power happy hour” to me… but if I don’t like it I can go down a block to someplace else! :)

  • Their description sounds like a dave and busters with scantily clad waitresses. Their website looks like your average tapas place.

  • I still can’t believe no one has opened a decent bagel place on 14th. I’d also love an Indian place nearby.

  • Is it just me, or do others run into a mental road block when thinking of “luxury living” with a scuzzy McDonald’s in the building?

I just can’t get past the notion of how nasty it would be to wake up to the smell of hash browns frying and then spending the day at the rooftop pool overwhelmed by the aroma of burgers, McRib, and Filet-o-Fish. Want fries with that?

    :P

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think that place generates a strong smell from it’s food. And having bacon, egg and cheese biscuits downstairs strikes me as more a feature than a bug.

  • Dubious

interesting name, given that Tico is the commonly used term for a Costa Rican

  • Anonymous

I’ve heard of Taco Tico, is this place related?

  • Anonymous

Haven’t look at the menu…. Let me guess… Tapas. So fucking boring…

  • The Other Jason

$8 for a f**king taco…and that’s the cheapest one on the menu? God I’m sick of 14th St and all the expensive, yet average, food!!

All the helicopter kids and as scenesters can f**cking have it. I’m through w/ wasting my money on this cr@p they’re force feeding us!

    Wake up people…
