Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or rejoice about daily life in DC.

  • Rave: Two on-site interviews on Monday!

  • Rave: it’s Frieday
    Rant: everything else

  • Rave – Boss encouraged me to apply for a promotion at work. So I’m gonna do it!

Rant – Writing the cover letter. barf. Mine sounds so fake…and I’ve been sitting here rewording the thing a hundred times.

  • Rave: FRIDAY

Rant: I just love editing a document while other people are editing the same document at the same time, so I have to redo all my edits in their version.

Rave: It won’t be much longer.

    Rant: Torrrrrrrrn.

    • You don’t have a network that prevents that? I get a pop-up from Word if I try to open a doc that someone already has open.

      • No I don’t think we do. And in this case, I had inserted the file into a much larger doc (master – compiled of many different sections), so I am not sure that would have helped anyway? Ugh.

    • I do as well. We use an excel status sheet, and I am constantly trying to figure out who has it open!

Version control is one of my biggest complaints at work. We do have a program that would help eliminate it, but no one wants to use it! And since I’m the admin, it means I am the one who has to constantly redo everyone’s work. ::grumble::

  • Rant: Ads that follow you around the internet. Yeah, I looked at a few items from the Nordstrom anniversary sale, and now they haunt every other website I visit. GRR. Stop looking at me, shoes!

    • I get this too! Not sure if this is a new development or what, but I went to Amerisave for my refinance (just closed with another company) and I see their ad on every POP page. I didn’t see it on this page when I went to comment, but yep, sure enough, bottom of the page, there it is!

      • I applied with Amerisave and am getting ads from them too! I wish the algorithm knew I now have absolutely no interest in refinancing with them.

    • Clear your cookies?

    • hahahah the same thing is happening to me with nordstrom!!!

    • Same! I was recently looking for a pocket knife for someone, now I have ads for hunting knives following me around.

    • Agreed! I am now haunted by ads for shoes, Catholic books and a pin that says, “Guess what? Chicken butt!”

    • I think its funny when I actually buy something and then I get ads trying to sell me what I just bought. That’s some effective targeting for you.

    • Adblocker.
I know some people can’t install filters on work computers, but if you can, you should.

Rave: We had an extra-extra special Friday communal breakfast in honor of a colleague who is leaving.

Rave: Roasted Yirgacheffe last night, and could not wait five days, so tried a cup today. Oh, my….liquid happiness.

  • Rant: Every single day seeing parents swear at, smack, or yell at their kids while waiting for the bus. Makes me so sad. 🙁

Revel: It is Friday and I’m going have a great weekend. Hoping I’m coming out of my funk!

  • Rant: Didn’t sleep well last night, partially due to my boyfriend singing German folk songs at the top of his lungs at 2 am. Apologies if you live in my building.

Rave: Off to Shenandoah this weekend

  • Rave: In West Africa – heading to Togo and Benin tomorrow.

Rant: Tied to my computer this afternoon while in Accra – grrrrrr.

Rave: At least I spent the morning wandering around and dipping my toes in this side of the atlantic/gulf of guinea.

Rant: Still fighting with IT about my broken computer…

Rave: Olympic Opening Ceremonies tonight!! And I’m in a country where they’ll be streaming all the events via youtube… now if only I could get a decent internet connection.

  • MsNesbitt

Rave: My two phone interviews this week went really well, and both are looking to fill the position really quickly! Fingers crossed that I make it to the next round.

Rant: It is FREEZING in my office and I forgot my cardigan at home.

  • Rant: Really need a vacation.

Rave: Finally getting one week after next!

  • Rant: I can’t figure out how my incompetent co-worker has managed to get 3 Fridays off in the last month in a half without using a vacation day. She’s really incompentent at the job, but apparently very good at working the system.

Rave: It’s Friday and I’m on vacation next week!

  • Rant: people who get on the 43 bus when the 42 is right behind it and then get off before Dupont Circle. The whole point of the 43 is for people to save time by going under the circle and it’s often so crowded that the driver won’t stop for people who want to do just that.

Rave: beautiful weather… Friday… a bit of a vacation next week… waiting to hear back on two jobs that both sound positive… almost done with all of the work I said I’d do before I went on vacation…

Rant: sad about closing chapters in my life.

  • Rant: Need to make something awesome for an office party breakfast Monday. Suggestions?

Rave: I love cooking so I’m okay with this.

  • Rant: Hangover. I mistakenly thought the weekend starts on Thursday. Ooops 🙂

  • Rant: I cancelled my account with Comcast in early July, returned my equipment and was told that my final pro-rated bill would be sent to my new address. The bill arrived with a due date of August 4th.

I got a call from a collections agency pressuring me to pay the bill through them 2 days ago. WTH?! Are they sending bills to collections beore the bills are even past due?! I’ve been trying to get through to Comcast’s collections department to complain and make damn sure that this is not going on my credit report, but I haven’t managed to get through in the evenings. And I really don’t want to have to make that call from my cube- even though I am not at fault here, it’s still embarrassing.

    • I had a similar issue with Comcast when I moved last year. They tried to tell me I returned the equipment almost two weeks after I actually did and then claim I owed them for that time. They sent it to collections very quickly and it took several phone calls with Comcast to get it straightened out. It was very frustrating. At one point, the person I was talking to transferred me to their collections department in Philadelphia who, of course, told me they couldn’t help me. All this to say, good luck!

I cancelled comcast in June (May?), was told they would send me boxes for the equipment that never showed and got 2 bills. First bill had correct prorated charge, second bill had me owing $0. I guess I should figure out how to give them back their crappy equipment. Before they decided to charge me thousands for it.

    • I cancelled Comcast last summer, promptly returned my equipment and then Comcast kept calling to ask where the equipment was. They called and called and called and sent bill after bill. I spoke with every call center rep possible. It’s now been a few months and I *think* I’m done with the calls and bills. I had no idea this was so common. Ugh. And good luck to you.

    • If it makes you feel better, I just got a TEXT message from the collections company even though I turned in my equipment a month ago! Why I continue to deal with Comcast is beyond me…

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: You can see the color of my undies through my dress.

Rant: Kind of a crappy morning.

    Rave: Cold, delicious coke.

    Rave: Farmer’s market tomorrow!

Rave: Learned about a new (online) hat store yesterday & they are having a sale so I ordered 2 new hats!

    • I think you overshared on (a) the type of morning you had (b) your enjoyment of coke and (c) tomorrow’s event. However I think you undershared on your initial rant.

  • Rant: Flip flops. I find it highly inappropriate to wear flip flops to work, yet so many people do it. I’m not “old” (31), but I just think it’s wrong and tacky.

    • Flip-flops TO the office or flip-flops IN the office? I’m not that old (30) and I wear flip-flops TO work everyday. I do this a) because I have a 10 minute walk to the metro and sometimes end up doing lots of walking during the day, b) because I dislike wearing shoes and would go without all of the time if it was acceptable and c) it’s HOT.

    • I think flip flops in or to the office is tacky. It looks so dumb. Wear a nice pair of flats and switch over to your heels if you so desire. Don’t wear flip flops! Our nation is far too casual. I’m 23 and my extremely southern valued grandmother would roll over in her grave if I wore flip flops to work. I even wear hose to work and don’t show cleavage. GASP!

      • I think flats are far less comfortable for walking than heels. That said, I have no problem doing my 1.1-mile walk to and from work in whatever heels I’m wearing to work. Yes, a new pair of shoes might rub somewhere, but that area will toughen up if you take a break from those shoes for a couple days. Somehow all the ladies were able to walk everywhere in heels, up until recently.

        • all the ladies also had to get bunion and achilles surgery later in life because of walking in heels so much. I agree that if you can’t walk in your heels you should still wear shoes and not not flip flops for your commute. while we’re at it, let’s make a psa to tell people to stop wearing their pajamas and underwear in public. if I have to eat dinner at a nice restaurant next to somebody in their disgusting yoga gear and flip flops one more time, I’ll explode.

  • I am so sick of gun violence in the USA. Another bright soul gone. Land of the scared, home of the…..

    • How about the 14+ illegal immigrants that died in a truck accident in Texas around the time of the Colorado shootings? Nobody raised a flag about that one either.

      • Not sure what a truck accident in Texas (which by the way did receive news coverage) has to do with a lament about gun violence in the USA. A better complaint about the post would be that the great majority of the people killed by gunfire in Chicago have not had their stories reported nationally because they weren’t college basketball recruits.

  • Revel: http://www.chicagonow.com/chicago-muckrakers/2012/01/new-registry-for-first-degree-murderers-highlights-controversial-debate/

Given so many young murderers in DC get 12-15 year sentences and are released in their 30s in DC, seems like we could use this. A gun offender registry would be good too.

Rave:In 3 more days I’ll be moving to SW.
Rant: I’m becoming a little nervous about moving to a new quadrant and I am not sure why?
