1721 Connecticut Ave, NW
The Ginza Japanese store located at 1721 Connecticut Ave, NW in north Dupont Circle is going out of business. I spoke with the owner who said everything is currently 20% off and they will remain open for a “couple more months”. It’s possible they may reopen in a new location but they have not found a new space at the moment.
I’ve always loved this store, I’ll be sad to see it go.

Just found out what I’m doing for lunch!!
Went today– it was pretty neat. A mix of high and low price stuff, unique things to comb through.
It’s hard to make money on a Japanese shop here, because importing these types of goods from Japan is outrageously expensive, so you have to sell them for unreasonable prices in order to make any money.
A shame. I’ve always loved this charming store.
This was very upsetting to me, but not surprising. I always loved what I saw in there, but the prices were up to 50% higher than what was available online. Although it is understandable due to real estate costs, I could never justify the extra expense, although I felt extremely guilty seeing things there and then buying them elsewhere as I really want to support independant stores of this type. I am sad to see them go, and I will continue to try to shell out a bit more to try to keep places like this alive.
Never even knew this place existed! I guess I should make it a point to go to Dupont more than once or twice a year.
So basically Pulp and Tabletop will be the only independent gift shops in all of NW?
Every time I visit another city I get really sad that DC has such a lack of independent shops. I love this city, but it’s becoming so sterile and boring.
It seems like every day another restaurant or bar opens (which I’m not complaining about at all! We need everything we can get!) but why is it so difficult to attract or make any other kind of retail work here?
Some retail has done very well here. Just not in Dupont.
where? share!

In my neighborhood Labyrinth, Hill’s Kitchen, Frager’s, Ginkgo Gardens, and Metro Mutts are all doing very well. Sapore also, although I think it’s too early to make that call for sure.
Capitol Hill Books, Clothes Encounters, Groovy, Howl to the Chief, Capitol Bikes, City Bikes, the two baby clothes shops and the rug place on 7th all seem to be doing well also. Am I forgetting anyone else?
Don’t forget about Monarch Novelties! For all your jester-hippo needs.
they are never open and their shop is full of trash and mold.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhh — hence the joke.
So what’s the verdict: cupcakes or Comfort One Shoes?
Chipotle or Potbelly?
I choose….frozen yogurt!

Oh, boo. Well, guess I better stop by and stock up on Totoro stuff before it’s all gone!
Very sad news. Used to remind me of Tokyo a bit when I was there. Hope they re-open elsewhere.
Oh no! This has been a favorite store of mine for YEARS! I hope with all my heart that they are able to remain open and can relocate. It would be such a loss if they closed for good. If you haven’t already, check them out. Great variety and fun gift options for all ages. It’s really a fun place to go.
A favorite of ours for dropping by to see what is there and occasionally pick up something. Sad to see it go. Hope it can prosper elsewhere and we know where that is.
