9th and T St, NW
Back in July 2011 we heard the Maya Angelou Public Charter School was for sale at 1851 9th St NW. Check out some history on the building here.
A readers sends word that the building has sold:
“Not sure what the plans are for the space, but it looks like it sold for $7.5 mil after an asking price of $9.5 mil. Closed on June 28.”
Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Ever read a police report, especially when you were a victim or witness?
My spouse...
A lot has changed in this neighborhood since you lived here four years ago. Sure the area...
Just moved into my new condo in dc and it's been over two weeks and I still have not...
It's summertime, school is out and it's the weekend. Wife and I were comnig home last...
murder is always scary and horrible. always.
So how much did the Charter School group pay the city for the school? Where does the profit go? This is an example of why the law that says charter schools get first dibs on surplus public school should be changed.
Ilouvlulu, The building was never owned by DCPS or the city. It is being sold by one public charter school to another public charter school. See the link for the history of the building in the above article. I would assume the money from the sales of the building are going to be put into the massive building renovation that is planned for the building where the HS and MS are currently held; see http://seeforever.org/support-us/campaign-for-our-future. I hope that addresses your concerns!
Hospitality High School will be moving in.
That is refreshingly good news. Thanks for the correction.
What a shame. Ms. Angelou grew up in this neighborhood and probably played in the shadow of this magnificent old building.
Why is this bad? Maya Angelou moved out, and I’m sure that they need to money from the sale. Another charter is moving in. Would you rather it stayed empty?
Why is it called Maya Angelou Charter School? Did she live in this building at one time?
Maya Angelou did not grow up anywhere in DC. She grew up in St. Louis and Arkansas. The school is named after her as a tribute to her life and perseverance.
