Dear PoPville – Sports field suggestions

Photo by PoPville flickr user gerdaindc

Dear PoPville,

Is anyone able to recommend fields for about 20 people to play a game of touch rugby this Saturday.

We contacted DC Park services about obtaining a permit on Monday- too late for the seven day processing time!

People are travelling some distance to participate so we are desperate to find somewhere that not too many people go to so we can play the game without getting kicked off.

Any help much appreciated.

  • touch rugby? pls elaborate. Gravelly Point maybe

  • Garfield Park – 3rd and S carolina ave se , maybe?

  • Meridian Hill park. I know they have “no team sports” signs, but hey, if you’re a rugger, you should scoff at signs like that.

  • Carter Baron.

The Clark Elementary now EL Haynes had a great field. Too bad the HS expansion work is making it smaller!

What I want to find is DC’s best stickball spot! and or street hockey location.

    • @anon perfect street hockey locale at Hamilton Park. in the northwest corner of the park, next to the bball courts, there are a few badminton courts sans nets. let me know if you wanna get a game going there sometime!

  • Rose Park or Montrose Parks in Georgetown? There are also a number of flatish grassy areas in upper Rock Creek Park that you could take over.

  • As the picture demonstrates, there’s plenty of room on the Mall.

  • Fort Totten park, tons of space and no users. Within a few blocks of the Fort Totten Metro

  • Ft Reno (by Tenleytown Metro), Wilson HS, Mann Elementary (New Mex/Nebraska), Georgetown field (Resivoir and 39th), Foggy Bottom – 19th and E, West end – 25th and M, Rock Creek (Tilden – bonus water fountains and bathrooms), or field behind Sidwell Friends (Idaho and 37).
Just not the mall – its overused and destroyed.

  • There is a rugby pitch behind the Holocost museum at 15th and Independence NW. The field is used by PAC (a local rugby team) and GW univeristy. Not sure on its availability. If you go to the end of Hains Point in West Potomic Park there are a couple of large fields there including my teams home pitch, The Washington Irish. If you get there early enough on a saturday you can usually find a spot to play.

  • Thank you everyone for the suggestions- its been a great help. I’m pretty confident with the above info its game on!

  • Also, the Netherland’s Carillion (next to Iwo Jima) in Arlington. But Rock Creek picnic area 1 (near the Pierce Mill) is ideal because of parking, bathrooms, water fountains and easy metro access.

  • next to RFK DCU practice fields are nice parks – or contact a local HS – they contract out independently (free) [Eastern, the science one in Bloomington, the one north of H street)- also – Gallaudet University – Trinity – and Catholic lease out their fields – no wait period – but not sure if it’s for free – lots of options

  • There are plenty of fields at Anacostia Park. (Across the river from RFK) It’s run by the national park service. Here’s the site:

  • And post when you pick a spot, maybe you’ll have some extras to run around!
