1787 Columbia Road, NW
Back in May 2010 we learned that the Urban Sustainable gardening store was planning on coming to 1787 Columbia Road, NW in Adams Morgan. Their Web site explained:
Our passion at Urban Sustainable is to promote the transformation of the urban resident into the urban farmer by providing the highest quality, best service, and widest selection of innovative growing supplies. With new technologies, cutting-edge growing techniques, and years of experience, we educate local communities on the value of growing food for personal consumption, and we provide everything they need to make the garden of their dreams a reality. Our ultimate aim is to facilitate sustainable, environmentally conscious living through urban agriculture.
On Wed. June 13th they announced that they have closed:
“Urban Sustainable is now CLOSED! We are relocating soon to the mid-west, look for details to be posted shortly.”
Prior to Urban Sustainable, 1737 Columbia Road was home to a locksmith.

Rant: Apartment hunting in this city is akin to Chinese water torture.
Rant: I've...
I've confronted this too. Its total BS. Next time, call 911 from your car.
While I agree, the fact that the metro system is largely closed now, in the recent past,...
Yikes... what a dungeon. I'm feeling grim just looking at the pictures.
in before some idiot complains about drink prices
I guess it wasn’t all that sustainable.
+1 I assume they mean Midwest like, Illinois?
LOL, good one!
Who would have thunk it that Farming wasn’t a good idea in the city?!? Doh!
This is too bad–the store and the people there were really awesome, and were so excited to discuss urban gardening tips and ideas.
Wishing them the best in the midwest! They should move to Chicago–every other roof there has a cool garden on it, or so it seems.
I always liked their windows full of plants.
“Just listen to that sustain!”

urban rents not so sustainable
That’s a shame, I will really miss them. The salespeople were always so friendly and helpful. Sad to see them go.
So much for “sustainable.”
More like urban-front-for-grow-lab. I’m looking for some uh err lights to uh um grow uh Mint!
I went in there one time because the place seemed cool but quickly found out I wasn’t about to grow anything in my house due to the electrical cost. The folks seemed cool and were generally interesting in helping people grow tomatoes and shit but the place reminded me a bit too much of my Phish listening roommate’s closet in college….
Sell booze or go under
I really loved this shop and the awesome owners, true believers. It seems that time was not ripe yet, crisis still has to hit a bit harder on people… Good luck guys, you made a true difference!
+1 very true. excellent people with tons of knowledge. they will be missed indeed.
Maybe they are moving to Detroit. There’s a huge interest in urban farming there.
OK, so now that this place is closed down, does anybody know where to get drip or micro irrigation supplies in the District? These things are also really useful for low-water-usage outdoor gardens, and I’m sick of buying large kits of connectors just for the 1 or 2 pieces that I need to complete a new run.
http://www.capcityhydro.com/ Looks like it’s on the backside of Domku.
Interesting concept, but they never had customers when I went in.
What was sustainable about running growing lights all night long?
