Rant: Summer. I hate it. Hate the heat, the humidity, and the clueless tourists who let their kids hang like monkeys on Metro poles. But I especially hate the whole family-oriented summer vacation packages. As someone without a family (well, at least without family I travel with)/partner, the constant barrage of advertisements for beach holidays, theme parks, and romantic getaways are just annoying. I have no problem travelling solo—I just wish the travel industry would realize that there is a market for solo travelers and come up with more creative ideas to get our business (that doesn’t include an exorbitant single supplement).
Rave: I have enough vacation days saved up so that even if I go nowhere, I can work 4-day weeks the rest of the summer.
Those tourists bring in a lot of tax revenue. Respect them.
Yes, but manners are free. It really isn’t too much to ask that when in public, visitors (and residents alike) share public spaces appropriately.
This is partly why I ride the bus a lot more in the summer – its usually free of tourists.
Manners are not free; they are learned. Depending upon where you were schooled or by whom you were taught, the price (apparently) varies greatly.
Also, sharing public spaces is much easier when you are very familiar with them. The tourists do not know the streets, sidewalks, buildings, and subways as intimately as the locals do. I don’t excuse them if they stop immediately after they step off an escalator (to me it’s common sense not to do stuff like that), but I do excuse them if they pause because they don’t know exactly where they need to go.
The tourists are a fly on the elephant of federal spending.
We could very easily do without them.
Tourist spending goes directly to DC. Federal spending is indirect at best. Let’s hang on to the tourists.

Rant: So I play a particular $10 scratcher (Aces High) from time to time and had a good feeling about the machine I get them from in the safeway by my house since I had already won $100. But I stopped playing as frequently for about a month. Anyway, I go in the Safeway yesterday for some juice and why is there a sign saying $100,000 scratcher sold here with pictures of the SAME EXACT game I play all of the time. I am so pissed, if I had just kept playing like I had been, there is a high possibility I could have been $100,000 richer.
Rave: Hopefully someone that needed it more than I do is $100,000 richer.
Rant: Ate way too much at Masa 14. Didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day.
Rant: I did eat more later. My wife made beans and I had some salmon and rice with them. Let’s just say I destroyed it.
Rant: Totally paying for all of my gluttony.

Rave: Job interview on Friday went well. Personal connections and an in-depth content knowledge hopefully helped me stand out.
Rant: They told me they had 250 applicants and were dealing with a “whole raft” of candidates. I hate knowing how many applicants there are because I start wondering how I can possible compete with 249 other people. I know a lot will not be viable candidates, but still.
Rave: Weekends (on a Monday AM PoP thread, shocker, I know

Rant: Seeing far too many cops on their cell phones while operating their cruiser (and not being able to get their info before they drive away).
Amendment: Seeing one cop on their cell phone while operating their cruiser is ‘far too many’.
Next time, make a citizen’s arrest!
Fyi, cops aren’t beholden to the laws as you and I are. It isn’t illegal for them to do that.

I could have sworn I just read something where she stated that it was not illegal. She cited that they need to be able to use all devices and that we don’t know what is going on when they are on the phone. That is when she stated that they aren’t beholden to the same laws as we are…

Ugh, I hate that too. Yesterday I was behind a police cruiser at a red light. Light turns green, I can see him typing away on his laptop… about 10 seconds later, I finally honked a little to make him aware. Meanwhile, a huge traffic jam formed behind him. GRR!
ugh, that’s annoying, sorry. I know how you feel! But be careful, I did a light tap of a courtesy honk to a cop who was chattin’ it up with a woman on the street (FTR: I could hear what they were saying and it wasn’t anything related to safety/security). Right after I honked, he stepped out of his cruiser, got on his soap box and started his lecture to me with, ‘You know I can give you a ticket for unnecessary honking, right?’ *rolls eyes…
Oh geez, really? Yeah I figured I was taking a risk.
Rant: Want to be able to go on a vacation with Mr. Squid, just a day or two at a bed & breakfast on the beach. But everything’s on hold while we wait for me to find a new job.
Rant: Angry at boss and disappointed in org’s leadership. Really, really disappointed.
Rave: Three weeks left with some amazing co-workers that make it worth it to come into work.

Rave: Not a serious injury. However my hand wraps make me look like a mummy princess.
Rave: Quality pool/sun time with the boyfriend, capped off by sangria and steak. And I didn’t worry about the job I’m waiting to hear from all weekend.
I’m glad you’re ok! I love riding my bike but I always feel intimidated by people (men) who think they’re riding in the Tour.
Thank you! I can’t completely blame other riders for my particular accident; I hit a pothole that I couldn’t avoid because of the extremely narrow part of the course I was riding through. I was somewhat intimidated most of the time though, by those super serious packs of riders.
You hit the nail on the head. I was just saying to my coworker that I like riding my bike to/from work every now and then but the Lance Armstrong wannabes definitely make it less enjoyable.

I sometimes have problems explaining! Storage means, my condo’s storage room in my building’s basement. Discussion group is not a PoP’s group, it’s an online group where I had discussions with fundamentalist religious people. I was like of them at some point in my life, but fortunately, I “born again” (in an non-religious way)
Eesh, I often find myself wanting to indulge in debating with people like that, but after seeing too many times that they are not ever going to change their mind, the best strategy is just “do not engage.” Hope your exit from the group results in some restoration of faith in humanity, as did mine when I employed said strategy

Thanks so much for the link. I had seen it on some news reports during the weekend but not much really said about intent, except that it seemed to be an intentional act. A little surprised it wasn’t on PoP, but PoP can’t be everywhere. Why is it that it seems when a person is apprehended at the scene of a crime, the explanation tends to be, “person has mental health issues.” Sigh.
Sorry about that, I was actually in NYC from Friday to Sunday so I wasn’t able to post over the weekend.
Rant: Was stuck in traffic behind someone who threw a cigarette butt out their window. I fantasized about getting out of my car, picking it up, saying “I think you dropped this” and flicking back into their car. Kind of wish I had, but who knows if the person was crazy or not. Fucking inconsiderate assholes. I got the license plate number, but honestly, what would be done about it if I reported it?
Angry much? Life is so short, you should really find more significant things to rage over. Or maybe not rage over petty things. Just my humble opinion.

Rant: What might finally prompt me to stop being lazy and leave Bank of America: Groupon-like ads in my checking account balance. No, just because I ate out one time does NOT mean to want 10% “cash back” at some random restaurant.
Revel: Workload at the job is down to “ridiculous but manageable” level! Rather than “actually physically impossible” as it was last week.
I left BoA about six months ago and could not be happier with the change. For what it’s worth, though, I think there’s a way to turn off those ads in your account.
Since it wasn’t obvious on their site (at least to me), I’ll also tell you that you can go into a BoA branch to close your account, if you decide to go that route.

anyone know of any doctors (general) accepting new patients in dc proper?
Oh man, that is so difficult. It took me YEARS to find a local doctor. I recently got a letter from a new practice that was opening up and graciously accepting new patients… for an annual fee of $150.
Fortunately there’s now a website called ZocDoc that lets you find doctors that are taking new patients: http://www.zocdoc.com/
Through ZocDoc I was able to find Dr. Natallia Shotashvili who is pretty good. It certainly beats calling 50 different offices trying to find someone who can take you.
Although you are asking about a doctor, I suggest Ms. Hammaker, the Physicians Assistant at Washington Medical Group in Dupont Circle. She has given me excellent care over the years.
I like my doc who recently opened her own practice down in Foggy Bottom.

The parade was fun, but where were the good parties this year? Phase One Capitol Hill was ok but the music was terrible, so we tried Phase One Dupont but they were charging a ridiculous cover. So we walked over to 17th Street but everything except JR’s and Cobalt was dead (and Cobalt also had a $15 cover). I guess U Street was the place to be?

This has happened to me in the 3 jobs I have quit. It’s pretty obvious that it happens when 1) your boss takes it personally, and 2) your boss realizes s/he should take it personally because s/he sucks. I’m guessing part of the reason you quit is because of your boss. I think that’s a big part of the reason anyone quits their job. Stay professional so they’ll feel even worse about their childish behavior. Even if you can’t imagine being connected to this person in the future, it’s best not to burn bridges too, no matter how tempting.
Rant: People on here complaining about the ‘humidity’ when it’s actually been very dry.
The relative humidity has been right around 40% for the past several days, which is abnormally low for this time of year.
Actually it was about 60% most of last night and this morning. When you can’t afford AC and have asthma, humidity can severely limit your quality of life, especially for the elderly, those with allergies, etc.
Humidity is always higher at night, because of the dew point.
60% humidity at night is low. In this area, relative humidity is usually around 75-85% at night.
Like I said, this region has been abnormally dry this summer, and fortunately we haven’t had any really hot days yet.
Have you thought about buying a dehumidifier?
No need to get into my personal life/finances but, since I can’t afford AC I also can’t afford a dehumidifier. I agree, that alone would probably help me to sleep at night.
While I agree that the weather does seem to be more mild compared to what I’d heard about the area, my point was just that what is “hot” or “cold”, “humid” or “dry”, can be dramatically different to each person. This is also the first time I’ve lived in such a “humid” climate without AC or a dehumidifier (never lived in a place where I actually needed either before).
It might take time to acclimate, especially if you’ve never lived in a really humid area before. Even having lived in DC for a while, I never get used to the extreme humidity in ways since I don’t prefer humidity. At the start of each summer season, it feels awful, etc. With time, your body somewhat adjusts, not fully, but a little bit.
Yeah, we’re definitely in the Humid Subtropic climate zone.
Hopefully we won’t have any 95-degree days with 85-percent humidity.

Rant: the little parasites stole my Macbook, iPad, iPod, and my Rx eyeglasses.
Rave: I have renters insurance.
Rant: They only pay cash value and not actual replacement cost, so I may not be able to replace all the items stolen.

I live in Eckington across from Mckinley Tech. It is a definite feeling of being violated. I haven’t been able to sleep in my bed since. I ‘ve been sleeping on the couch because I am afraid. I really want to move because it just doesn’t feel like my home anymore, but I am having a hard time finding a place in DC that I can afford.

Random: When climbing onto the bus on Friday, there was a box next to it that was moving. The bus driver and three cops were trying to cut and poke holes in it–I assume so it could breathe AND to see what was inside. Sadly the bus pulled away and now I will never know just what was in the box!
