PoP Preview: Kangaroo Boxing Club – Columbia Heights’ Newest Neighborhood Bar

3412 11th St, NW

Back in Feb. 2012 I shared the news that the PORC food truck was opening a brick and mortar restaurant in Columbia Heights in the old Aquario space at 3412 11th St, NW (next to Meridian Pint.) We previously learned:

Brought to you by the founders of popular food truck, Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (PORC), Josh Saltzman and Trent Allen; along with fellow U of Michigan alum Chris Powers and DC-native Peyton Sherwood.

Kangaroo Boxing will be the establishment everyone wishes for their own neighborhood. A nice relaxed atmosphere, quality and consistent menu options and a solid selection of beer and wine.

The name, Kangaroo Boxing Club, comes from long-running, drink-infused, late-night bar discussions on the fact that, without technology, man is physically unable to compete with the majority of the animal kingdom. How would you win a match with a kangaroo?

I’m happy to say they’ll be open very soon. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek and share some photos. Stay tuned for the opening and the full menu in the next couple of weeks.

Lots more photos after the jump.

Beautiful woodwork

Those who’ve walked by 11th St, in the past few months probably saw these blocks of wood getting hand carved:

The space is covered in awesome old photos:

You can bring games:

Of course a jukebox:

But beware:

Great bay window seating:

Stay tuned for full beer and drink list:

Hard to believe this is what it used to look like:

  • Looks like someone finally found a place to play backgammon…

Wow, looks great! And I’ve enjoyed the food I’ve had from Porc, so I can’t wait to check this place out.

Wow! Looks great! So much happening on 11th Street!

  • How come there’s no pictures of the ring where the kangaroos will fight?

  • Looks nice; I wish them luck. On the other hand, I also wish the ownership group had not been working so intently on opening the restaurant. Then they would have had the time to bring the PORC truck today to L’Enfant Plaza, its usual Wednesday destination. Today I will have to obtain lunch from somewhere else!

  • Yahoo! Looks great, can’t wait to try. The attitude of these guys is a total 180 from Acuario; I hope the food is as well.

  • Looks awesome. But if you “86” my choice on the jukebox, you had better give me a refund.

    • No shit.If they 86 something a person has paid for, they had best pay that person for what they are not getting.

Dear pretentious bars: If you have a public jukebox, then the public picks the music. If you do not like the music chosen by the public, don’t let the public pick it.

    • Guys and Gals,
It’s totally a joke. We only had that up during our two days of family and friends tasting nights. No one was paying for music anyways, it was all on the house. By the time we have our grand opening on Tuesday it will be restocked with some good tunes. And by the way, it was to prevent people from playing Christina Aguilera in particular. Sorry, we’re not fans of the genie.

  • Those pics on the wall look a lot like they were taken straight from Shorpy.

    • A lot of Shorpy’s photos come from the Library of Congress where they are freely downloadable http://www.loc.gov/pictures/

      • Exactly. You can download a high-resolution version of nearly every pic on Shorpy from the LOC, and legally make as many high-res prints of it as you like. Of course the versions on Shorpy have also been cleaned up by someone who knows what they’re doing. And there are some amazing colorized photos on there, contributed by visitors.

  • Looking forward to it. Love that they have some outdoor seats.
