Mid City Fish Market Abandoned at 14th and P St, NW?

1418 14th St, NW

Thanks to all who sent word about the letter posted on the door of Mid City Fish Market at the corner of 14th and P St, NW:

The date of the letter posted says June 7th. On the evening of June 7th there was a fire on the third floor of this building. It is not clear if the letter was posted before or after the fire.

I can’t vouch for the food but I will miss their fish signs if they do close. More info as it becomes available.

I walked by with the dog around 5:45 with the dog and noticed that sign on the 7th. Then hearing about the fire, thought it a little suspicious.

Has anyone actually eaten here? I would walk by this place every day and have not once seen an actual customer inside or any food being made for that matter. If they were serving food, you’d have to be really desperate to even touch it. I just figured this place was a front for something else.

That location is booming these days. Hard to believe someone would just abandon the property.

I always wondered if they did enough business to afford the rent… kind of like Monarch further up on 14th Street. How they’re still around is a mystery.

  • Mike

The fish market closed the beginning of May. I work three doors down and there was a sign on the door since May 1 saying they were closed for business. Im not sure what is going on with the rest of the building, but the fish market was closed way before the fire last week.

Wasn’t it just on fire last week?

  • something here seems fishy.

As I commented just after the fire (in the original thread), this place is gone – i.e., it will be developed into something (anything) than the dump is was over the many previous years.

@Anon: “The longtime owner is committed to keeping the fish restaurant operating as a place for lower income workers to grab a quick bite. It will obviously need some repair work after the fire, but don’t count on it changing hands anytime soon.”

Count again, the owner doesn’t seem quite as committed as you thought – nor is the restaurant owner (assuming it’s someone different than the building owner) – given that the restaurant was closed and “abandoned.”

Thank god nobody was physically hurt during the fire and sorry about the property/financial losses of apartment tenants, but this place being gone is only a benefit for the community.

restaurant was closed b/c of health violations

That is prime real estate. I doubt that it will be vacant long.

I see rats running around the outside of this place all the time. I am all for decent cheap eats and good heart attack breakfast foods–which Logan Circle is on definitely short on, but I never walked into this gross and disgusting place.

For those who pine for old-time fish establishments like this one, there’s one on the southside of RI Avenue in NE at the intersection with 4th street, I believe. Given the rumblings of gentrification that are taking place around the RI Ave metro with its really cool warehouses, I’d get your fill of croaker while you can.

You mean Fish King? I believe they are now soul food and Korean now. Nice family runs the place.

Following up on my earlier posts on how great it is that this hole will be gone – assuming PoP gave the right address – this place was last assessed at $769,810.
