Expect a new concept in the future from Stir Food Group, the parent company

Zola Wine & Kitchen opened at 505 9th Street, NW in Dec. 2008.

A reader writes:

“The liquidation sale started yesterday at 11 am and by 2:30pm almost all of the wine is gone. I spoke with an employee who said the space had been bought by an anonymous buyer with a short time table. He wouldn’t give me me a name but said it was a restaurateur who already had space in the area. Mike Isabella?”

Damn, a day late and a dollar short. Wish I had known and the funny thing is that my wife was saying we should go by after work yesterday but that was likely too late as well.

I stopped by at 5 yesterday and they told me they had sold every single bottle of wine already

I was in at 11:30am yesterday and was shocked at how much of the inventory was gone already. The check-out line was consistently 15-20 people deep the whole time I was there. 50% off was a steal though. I walked out with 10 nice bottles of wine.

  You can buy the same wine at Calvert Woodley every day of the week for less than their 50% discount prices. The bottles of wine they charge your 45 bucks for at the restaurant ($23 bucks in liquidation) are still only $18 bucks at CW.

    Yup. Between CW and Weygandt Wines in Cleveland Park, there’s really no other reason to go anywhere else.

    The wine shop didn’t charge the same prices as the restaurant. I never did a side-by-side comparison of specific wines but I didn’t think their wines were particularly expensive. Plenty in the $10-20 range.

I had a celebratory lunch at Zola right after my wedding ceremony. Will always remember that place.

Not a big deal to me, really. The food was OK, but the wine was overpriced and certainly not the finest curation in the District.

I work across the street. It was by FAR and away the best lunch place in the neighborhood – $12 for more than enough, usually, for two days’ lunches. Plus, it was really good.

I asked one of the clerks what happened. He told me that the “most famous chef in DC, who already owns several restaurants in the area” had bought the space and closed down ZWK.

Thanks, Jose. I can’t afford to eat at any of your other restaurants or your overpriced food truck, so I’m going to assume that whatever you put in here will be no different.
