The Claridge House! I roomed with a college friend for a summer there back in the day, and the rent for basically this same unit was $950. Given that when I say “back in the day” I really do mean it — 15+ years ago, to be precise (gaaaah) — and considering the location and the amenities (they have definitely spruced up the common areas since our day), this sounds like it’s probably about right. The building is a co-op, so I’m thinking the monthly fees are probably higher, which may add to the owner’s costs.

They aren’t rewarded to people who “look”, they go to people who luck out timing-wise in snagging a rent-controlled apartment (no one would rent an apartment in NW without rent-control) and a concern only for location rather than the quality of the unit. I currently live in a rent-controlled apartment in a fantastic location. I’m leaving, after having spent six months here, for a place that’s $600 more a month; sometimes “deals” are not worth the thrift.

I have a friend who rents a studio for $800 two blocks from here so I would say no. Keep looking there are deals out there.

@totanon If you’re paying $1125 for a 1br/1 ba that’s 1 block from Foggy Bottom you’re getting one of the best deals in the city of Washington. I remember my ex-gf rented a studio a block from that metro station in 2005 for $1350. You’re in a bigger unit, 7 years later, for $200 cheaper?
