That's true, but then again, a similar place in Woodley near the Metro would be about $700/month more.

also not so because whole foods really isn't that expensive. if you buy gourmet cheeses and the organic fruit that isn't in season it can be, but if you shop normally it's very competitive. my wife and I get groceries for a week (5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 3/4 dinners, snacks) for about $70.

Not so. There is a pretty big safeway about another quarter mile down the road from the whole foods. This is actually my ideal area. It has just about everything I could want within walking distance. A couple of decent restaurants, including good pizza (Cavanaugh's), good sushi (sushi ko), good bar food (bourbon), and a number of other cheaper options (surfside/ Rocklands). It has a quality supermarket, a strip club, a church, for the day after the strip club, and some other cool stuff if you go in the other direction on Wisconsin. It also has a gym within walking distance, a community garden, etc. etc.

Point taken, but the buses (which you did mention) are pretty plentiful and will take you to useful places. It's not the right neighborhood for folks who must (for whatever reason) have quick access to metrorail or who want to be right in the action (whatever that may be).

The biggest down side I can think of at the moment is that the most walkable grocery store (Giant) is about to be torn down and the next most walkable grocery store is really expensive (Whole Foods).

I used to live down the street from here, it's a fine area but completely Metro inaccessible. The closest stations are Woodley Park and Tenleytown and both are 5-10 minute bus rides away.
