While we knew 1626 U St, NW was going to become a “sunless tanning experience” plus “a shop of antique curiosities and rare finds”, it’s wild to see it in person. You can read more about Fit to be Tan here.
I’m still not sure if this is bizarrely awesome or just bizarre:

The place is a museum, where people come to see ‘em, they really are a scream. ….
huh? that seems so odd. not that i would ever go tanning, but if i did, i don’t think i would go there to do so. it’s like 2 totally random business ideas thrown together.
I’ve always thought this was one of the strangest business partnerships – rare curiosities and sunless tanning.
WHOA. I’m generally anti-tanning but this is so totally weird and ridiculous that I am kind of obsessed with it.
If for some bizarre reason I ever decide I need a spray tan, I’m going here, just for the story value.
Trying for an Austin vibe? This seems like something one would find in Austin.
Perhaps one points to a piece of furniture (or a stuffed animal on the wall) to indicate the skin tone desired from the tanning process.
Awesomely bizarre! Are we sure we’re not being hoodwinked by some performance artist?
These bizarre business parternships had something of a cult status in my home town (Edinburgh, Scotland).
There was a store on Shandwick Place in the West End that sold greetings cards/stationary upstairs and was a hairdressers downstairs.
The most famous was “Borland’s Darts and Televisions” on Leith Walk. It sold darts/snooker accessories AND TVs, VCRs, cables and such.
I just googled it and it still exists: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/RkxS86ja8U7pUXbvpsO0Ow?select=xIFh463aVGXIEzLgoVqkIg.
Looks like a special celebrity episode of “Hoarders: Charles Nelson Reilly”
Instead of saying “Why?” I’m all “Why not?!” This is AWESOME!
I think I might want almost everything (except those chairs) I can see from that picture. Particularly intrigued with the metal structure that looks to be round on the floor next to the front chair and chandelier. Plus those fans.
I happen to love this place! Great spray tan (i looked AMAZING the next day) and customer service. The whole place is super clean and smells amazing. The vintage/antique wares for sale just make the experience more–ecclectic! Highly recommended. Also check out the $25 spray tan special on livingsocial.com.. Can’t beat the price!
Great news. I live on U Street but actually traveled out to Arlington just to get this spray tan for special occasions. And anyone who lives in DC knows how much of a pain in the a*s it is to travel over the river. This place is legit. So excited.
