Dear PoPville – I Miss Shaw

Photo by PoPville flickr user Matt.Dunn

Dear PoPville,

I had to move to NYC 2 months ago, and even though I was born here, I hate it more and more every day. I lived in Shaw for 5 years. I find myself missing my Radical Faeries, my DC Rollergirls, my Sonic Transducers and most of all, my husband, Jason. I cried really hard this morning. Greatest city in the universe my foot!

Oh Shaw of beautiful blossoms,
Oh Shaw, is my home it is awesome,

Welcome to Shaw, Le slum historique.
Welcome to Shaw, It’s okay to be a freak,

Living in Shaw, meet our security dude Kareem,
Living in Shaw, come here to dream.

Someone tell me one good reason why I should not hop the Bolt today and get a job waitressing at Busboys and poets?

  • Get your arse back down here. This place needs as many people who love it as much as you do as possible. Plus, you need to see the Howard Theater. 🙂

    • +1. We need more people who really love it here, and don’t just love it for the first six months they live here, before trying to find any possible way out.

    • I haven’t been inside the Howard yet, but the plaza outside and the new sidewalks are kick ass.

  • Come back!

  • I thought everything was better in NYC!

  • I hear so much about people who don’t like DC or don’t intend to stay here that reading this sentiment is refreshing. But without knowing what caused you to move to NYC (irresistable job offer? grad school? the need to take care of a sick loved one?), no one can tell you whether coming back to DC is the answer. Good luck, DC will still be here if you decide to come back!

  • I have numerous friends in NY who absolutely hate it there. I’m from there and don’t miss it. DC has so much more going on.

Same here! I’m from NYC and don’t really miss it. (Except for bagel shops and the 24/7 subway system…although shout out to So’s Your Mom in Adams Morgan for filling the bagel-shaped hole my heart)

    • I’m from here, but lived in NYC for 10 years…. I can’t tell you how great it is to be home. I literally look around this city and thank GOD I made the move back home. I think to myself, “I LOVE this city” every single day and feel honestly relieved that I am home. I mean, I miss the pizza in NYC and the option of getting ANYTHING delivered at 3am, but that’s about it. Exhale!

  • That picture really does Shaw justice, PoP.

  • I love this piece. Cuz I love and miss Shaw too. I grew up in Shaw and now I live in another trendy neighborhood in DC. I long for my Shaw days!!! I think Shaw is the coolest neighborhood in the city!!!

  • Ronde Seafood is much more reliable. Also fumbles less.

  • New York is like everywhere else. If you live in a shitty part of the city, it will stink. The upper East, FiDi, Upper West are not very interesting places to live. Brooklyn! That being said, after being here a while I’ve lost all city envy. Its a great city if you look for what is good.

  • Let’s trade places!

  • I lived in Shaw for a year but then had to move to College Park for 5 (don’t ask). My wife and I just bought our first home in Shaw last year and it feels so good to be back home in Shaw!

Come home. Once this city gets in your blood, you can’t get it out.

  • Wooooo so happy to hear it, Shaw is definitely my favorite neighborhood

  • you just made me love DC even more! and i didn’t think it was possible. thanks!!!!!

  • LOL @ “le slum historique”! it’s the best! come on home, darlin, come on home! life is too short to be homesick 🙂
