SoberRide is Back, Get a Free Taxi Ride this St. Patrick’s Day

From an email:

“Together with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) SoberRide initiative, AT&T is proud to provide free taxi rides (up to $30) to anyone over 21 in the greater Washington, DC area this Saturday, March 17 from 10pm until 6am on Sunday.

AT&T customers can call #TAXI to get a safe, free ride home, while others can dial 800-200-TAXI.”

Has anyone ever had luck with this?

the couple times i’ve tried i’ve never been able to get through to an operator.

I’ve never heard of anybody, ever, getting a ride through this service on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a good day to use public transportation, or walk.

Ditto on that. Tried on New Year’s eve a couple of times. No dice. I feel like they must have like 5 cabs that do it. It is a big PR scam.

      • Anonymous

Of course not. This is a PR ploy for the companies on the poster, nothing more – nothing less.

        • Anonymous

Pretty effing shameful by the companies involved, if you ask me. And then there’s AT&T, whose capacity is so terribly inadequate that you probably won’t even be able to complete a phone call to anybody, when there are so many people out on the streets at once.

Considering that it is incredibly difficult to find cabs in entertainment areas at peak times of night, and there is essentially no working radio cab infrastructure here, it’s impossible for me to believe this is anything except a PR stunt by AT&T and the alcohol companies. Which cabs, exactly, are they contracted with? How do they dispatch them? Have they ever released a report on how many free rides are given?

I could believe this in Arlington, with Red Top, but no way in DC.

  • I concur with the other posts. I have never successfully gotten a cab using this service and I have never heard of anyone else doing so either.

I’m sure *somebody* is getting a free ride home, but I have to believe this is more publicity stunt than anything else.

  • MYA

I called once, had to wait too long, when the cab arrive I was already gone.
The next time I called they said they dont take people to parties but to home address :) it must be an end address, they ask you all kind of crazy questions.
    Not worth it!

  • It is a marketing ploy. And I feel the intent is great but the execution just isn’t there. Shame on AT&T for their PR department.
