Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

  • Rave: I have 5 federal job applications in right now.
Rant: Not expecting to move forward in the process with any of them, despite being (in my opinion) a perfect match. I used buzzwords, the proper resume format, and I rated myself highly on the questionnaires (but not so high that I’m lying). If this doesn’t work, I give up.
Rant: Trying to train my dog to stop barking at night. I am less than patient at 3am which I’m sure isn’t helping.

    • Ugh. It’s such a frustrating process. Good luck!!!!

    • Don’t give up! It’s a pretty competitive process these days, especially if you’re trying to come in from outside the federal government, but it’s worth giving it a shot.

    • Even though I know it’s easier said than done try not to get discouraged! Keep in mind that there is high likelihood that there are people with non-competitive status and/or other hiring preferences (i.e., veteran’s preference) that, legally, have to be considered before you can (assuming you can’t claim one of those statuses). This isn’t a commentary on whether or not they deserve it, I’m just pointing it out since it is often an unknown aspect of the hiring process, esp to outsiders. Good luck!

      • I just heard that I scored a 98 on a fed application, but wasn’t moved forward for an interview–the veteran’s 10 point preference is tough competition right now.

Rave: Never again I’ll say that I’m getting old; now I know I was not doing enough exercise.

  • Rant: Gun robbery at 8:30 this morning at 9th and T.

Rant: Bet THAT doesn’t make the news.

  • Rave: The Kevin Rudd resignation definitely made for an entertaining morning.
Rant: 3 days with new braids and my head STILL hurts.

  • rant: my disgusting neighbor who chokes/vomits/hacks up her spleen every morning and then flushes it down. It’s been years of living in this apartment and when I first moved in I figured it was morning sickness, then stomach cancer, then lung cancer, but she’s still at it bright and early every day.

Bulimia perhaps? I had a roommate in college who was bulimic (long story behind this one, but I won’t get into that now) and when she relapsed to it, it was really obvious because you’d hear her hacking in the bathroom (she’d run the shower but still) and then the toilet flushing. That’s a hard one to deal with…

    • Rant: got a flat tire on my bike during my commute yesterday morning and had to walk the rest of the way.

Rant: left the key to my wheel lock at home because I’d washed my jacket and taken it out of the pocket. Had to leave bike in office garage overnight.

Rant: took the metro this morning and red line clusterf*ck turned my commute from Petworth into a 65 minute adventure that included walking from Gallery Place to 22nd street. Late two work two days in a row.

    • could it be just somebody with clogged sinuses? A loogie a day keeps the doctor away…

  • Rant: I was a pain au chocolat- that photo is making me crave a good one!!

Rave: Made Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Shortbread last ngith as well as awesome cornbread so I think I’m all set for yummy food.

Rave: Beautiful weather this week- cannot wait to leave work a little early tomorrow and a get workout in during the sunny part of the day!!

Rant: Last night was one of those nights when I was tossing and turning and continuously waking up all night.

Rave: Have been putting off writing a letter of application for taking graduate courses but finally just sat down to it this morning and found it surprisingly easy! Helps that I am really quite qualified for the courses I’m applying for.

Rant: Still have to update my resume.

  • Rant: Was 30 minutes late to work this morning, after accidentally turning off my alarm instead of snoozing.

Rave: Almost everyone in my office that would care is on travel.

Rave: I am taking some time to relax this evening, which I hope includes minimal laundry, catching up on the awesome book I’m reading, and Modern Family!

  • Rave1: Teleworking today.
Rant: Horrible night sleep (so happy about Rave1).
    Rave2: Jim Gaffigan tomorrow night!!
Rave3: Cute boys with good personality asking me out.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Not much sleep last night.

Rave: the Fug Girls. Their Fug the Show bits make even the gloomiest day bearable.

  • Rant: Broken main water line pipe. Please oh Please make the break be on the city side. Don’t really have the funds to pay for a major plumbing job.

  • Rant: Salespeople that don’t do their research before they pop into your office and act like dickheads to the receptionist

  • em

Revel: Second escalator FINALLY open again at Fed Center SW. No more fighting against the herd of NASA/Hill staffers/others who tended to block the entire escalator for people going in the other direction, resulting in missed trains and stomped on feet.

Revel: Blueberry buttermilk pancakes in celebration of Shrove Tuesday last night. Still thinking about how yummy they were. (Bonus revel: Fiancee made mushroom and spinach rice casserole to pack in lunches for today!)

  • Rave: My insurance problem has been cleared up, at loooooong last! All I owe is a $30 co-pay!!!!!
Rant: Have a mandatory physical for work today. I hate physicals……and its in the building so I don’t even get to leave.
    Rave: Recently discovered Downton Abbey!

  • Rant: Broke up with the boyfriend this week.
Rant: Friend’s dad died suddenly of a heart attack last night.

No raves coming out of this, but the latter really does give you perspective on what’s actually important.

  • Rant: I sprained my foot last night! Never having had to use crutches before, I’m coming to realize how difficult life is going to be for the next few weeks.

    • Ugh, I’m sorry…..I’ve been there! Crutches in the city are NOT fun, but do-able. Just be careful on escalators, and be grateful of the warm weather! Crutches + City + Snow = AWFUL!

  • Rant: The car wouldn’t start. AGAIN.
Rave: Adam Sandler’s “Ode to My Car” (POS car) still makes me laugh.

  • Rant: Underemployed. Consulting work has dried up – it’s happened before and I’ve survived but I’m getting anxious.

Rave-ish: I can swim when the pool isn’t crowded. Good stress relief.

With warmer weather I’m seeing lots more people out on bikes. And about half don’t wear helmets. I wonder why this is so – wearing a helmet seems to be a no-brainer (or pro-brain-er).

  • Rant: Headache.

Rave: Hot guy in the choir at church this afternoon.

Rant: I’m pretty sure I’m not supposed to be thinking about hot guys in church. 🙂

    Rant: Dentist appointment.

Rave: No problems with my teeth!
