Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo of ‘Lots of Nice Girls in Washington, D.C. (c. 1912)’ by PoPville flickr user StreetsofWashington

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

Rave: Thanks to everyone who has already donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to prevent/cure childhood cancers. In the first couple of hours we’ve already raised over $750. I have a lofty goal of raising $5000 so if you haven’t donated please do what you can – even $5 helps. And then on March 10th, you can make fun of me when I get my head shaved at Fado with team Boundary Stone! I am incredibly moved by how many people have donated so quickly. Wishing everyone a very happy Valentine’s day.

I usually don’t care about this day or others, but today I will.

Rave: Felíz Día del Amor y la Amistad para todos.

  • Rave: Surprised with flowers at the office from the bf!
Rave: Celebrating galentines tonight with some awesome ladies and nutella brownies!

  • Rave: I’m excited about having dinner and drinks with my best friend tonight! This holiday isn’t terrible if you’re single, it’s kind of fun. I’ll be the girl eating tons of chocolate, drinking wine and really, just enjoying friends and loved ones.

Rant: This coffee tastes remarkably like tea…

  • Rave: Promoted from volunteer to staff (still volunteer) of the public service portion of the professional organization I’m part of. Looking forward to contributing even more and seeing what opportunities I can be part of!

Rant: Tired of waiting for the next step in my career…need to start looking for the next move again.

Rant/Rave: Valentine’s Day photo haikus on Slate. Tears.

  • Rant: Never-ending project that needs to just disappear- so frustrating and problematic!!
Rave: NPR valentines – they are hilarious! http://www.npr.org/valentine/
Rant/Rave: Husband has a work conference call at 9PM tonight- right in the middle of Valentine celebrating time… But we have a yummy dinner planned to cook together and will get to spend time together, so that’ll be nice.

  • Rave: I got a call for an interview at a Federal Gov’t agency! It’s for a type of position that isn’t in a field I had thought about before, but I’m definitely open to it. I submitted my resume during a career fair ages ago, and never thought I’d actually hear back from anybody I spoke with. Super stoked!

Rant: While the pay is probably great (compared to all the nonprofits I’ve been applying to!), it’s not an international job. After working in international education and int’l development for the past 7-10 years, I’m not sure how I feel about leaving this behind.

But no need to get all worked up about it, as I haven’t even had the interview yet. I’ll be crossing bridges when I get to them. At least that’s the plan!

    • Look at the bright side: the hard part is getting into the government. Assuming the position isn’t that narrowly focused, you can make a lateral change after a year or two to a position that does have an international component.

      • Fed.Gov moves so slow… The process was also supposed to switch to a resume only process (No KPI questions) over a year ago. Remember though, they have been on pay freezes for over a year now and its likely to get extended for 2 more years+, so negotiate a good salary…

        • Thanks, I’m already a Fed though (@ another agency), so I’m getting the interview under streamlined procedures for current fed employees… and the salary negotiations will probably be somewhat limited by my current salary history.

But hey- it’s a permanent job, which compared to my current term-limited position (that ends in 9 months), that’s a big bonus!

      • That’s what I’m wondering. This agency does have an international affairs department, so it’s not out of the question.

But your point about the focus of the position does stand though- this position might be pretty narrowly focused, but gaining skills in technical writing and policy writing and analysis could be very valuable!

  • Where are the single men and women going for HH tonight?

    • A listserve post that was shared –

On Valentines day, you can spend the evening at one of DC’s most
gorgeous locations, The Kogod Courtyard, mingling, playing the debate
game, participating in the speed dating event (if you’re so inclined),
taking part in their sexy games, or just letting it out on the
dancefloor to their special collection of love music.

Singles? Couples? You’re good either way. Expect a crazy, random, fun
evening. A sort of anti-valentines day, valentines day experience.

      Can’t beat that!

Contact thedebategame (at) gmail (dot) com for more info or the Smithsonian
Institute ‘Art of Love’ project at artoflove (at) si (dot) edu Please be sure to
pre-register if you want to get in on the speed dating.

So from 5-7Pm on Valentines Day. Enjoy!

  • Rant: Night before Valentine’s Day: “I’ve been thinking”….”too soon since my last BF”…”give me a week to think about it”…

Rave: two new open evenings this week!

  • Rave: my office window overlooks a florist. I’m having fun watching all of the activity going on there. They even have a triage set up outside of the store for all of those last minute V-day shoppers.

Rant: I won’t be getting any flowers.

Rave: I’ll just buy my own flowers tomorrow when they’re on sale.

Rave: Had supper last night from a friend from back home who is in town for a convention. I love living in convention towns!

Rave: Tonight going to a concert with my nieces and sister. I’ve never hear of the band, but all the pre-teen and teen girls are into them. It’s gonna be fun!

Super Duper Rave: My artist pal out West who has had my purse, Teresa, for AGES has sent me pictures of the final product. The drawing he did on her is perfect! And she should be arriving home soon!

  • Rave: Attended my first Jazz class last night. I’d forgotten how much I love to dance! I was in an awesome mood all night, even when the awful roommate came home. And apparently dancing is like riding a bike – you never forget how (unlike hula hooping).

Rant: Still don’t know what to do tonight – friend I’d already made plans with or boyfriend who still doesn’t know for sure if he’s off? Ugh.

Rave: Made awesome cookies for the office! Heart-shaped sugar cookies dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with cherry M&Ms!

Rave: Today is the last day of the fundraiser I was planning. Hooray!

  • Why is the card a picture of JFK helping an 18 year old climb a tree?

  • I think I’ve fallen for the most beautiful nubian princess and we haven’t even met yet. If she would only take out those earbuds so I could talk to her. Ipods are just killing our collective chances to hook up.

    • As a conversation opener… couldn’t you ask her what she’s listening to?

    • Perhaps she’s wearing the earbuds because she doesn’t want to talk to strangers on the Metro/wherever you are seeing her? A lot of women in this town have grown so accustomed to being harrassed that they aren’t open to meeting random men.

  • Rave: Feeling good today. Happy V-day, everyone!

    • Additional rave: my octogenerian grandmother that teaches water aerobics and has learned how to text. She’s the cutest. 🙂

Rant: A friend of mine figured out my handle on PoP based on a story I ranted about here, and then retelling that story at a party. I don’t want to change my PoP-name, but alas, I must…

Rant: Boyfriend is out of town all week for work.
Silver-lining raves: Because he isn’t here, we (a) don’t feel pressured to celebrate Valentine’s Day today and (b) I get to drive our car to work all week 🙂

I’ve got more rants and more raves, but I don’t want to blow my cover again.

    • I have worried about this myself since I know I have coworkers that peruse the site. That is why I try to keep my coke binge and swinger party stories to a minimum. 🙂

  • Why do none of the nice girls in DC like her?

  • Ran: Apparently I am the fastest poster of all time.

Rave: Work sent me to Charleston and even though I’m in meetings all day, I had time on Sunday afternoon to wander about and the lunch breaks are long enough to get out and see some of the city.

Rant: The meeting goes until at least 5 pm today, so not able to get home tonight to spend Valentine’s Day with my love.

Rave: We celebrated early on Saturday and had a lovely time.

Rave: Less than four months until the wedding!

Rant: Less than four months until the wedding and there are still things to get done.

  • Revel: just back from a fun weekend in New York with my parents. Good times.

    Rant: Work.

Rant: I don’t have an ounce of romance in me.

Revel: The potato soup at Red Rocks is delicious. Delicious!

  • Happy Valentine’s Day pumpkin. Sorry I fell asleep on you.

  • First Valentine’s Day with a real valentine. I finally get why people make a big deal over this hallmark holiday. Woke up to breakfast in bed. Got to work to find candy hidden in my purse. This holiday is awesome!

  • Rant: Garbage. I rant about the garbage all the time but I have to get it out of my system. I just truly do not understand it. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why people throw their trash all over the f-ing place when there are public garbage cans available less than half a block away? I mean, they throw their trash on their OWN block in front of their OWN homes. Seriously, what is it about the people who live in my neighborhood (C.H.) that makes them such filthy litterbugs? I really don’t get it because I think garbage is gross to everyone, right??

Is it the fact that many of these people lived in CH before it got “cleaned up” and got used to living in a place that got overlooked by the city for years so they just learned to not care? Who knows, maybe there didn’t used to be public garbage cans or regular garbage removal services up here. Is it spite?

Any litterbugs out there reading this care to explain the mentality? Its just so gross when trash is everywhere, on the streets, the sidewalks, peoples’ lawns, etc.

    • Agreed. Kids on my block constantly leave their sippy drinks. Neighbors treat the sidewalk and gutter like a trash can. I am constantly walking around picking it up, so lame of them to be so disrespectful to our shared space. NH Ave south of Grant Circle has a couple hot spots that are even far worse than what I have to deal with. My buddy in DC govt said he could get me a handheld trash grabber, maybe I should get more than one and have PoP give them away.

Let’s have a Petworth spring trash pick up day someday soon.

    • I am with you 1000%

  • Rave: Unattached drifter Christmas!
